4 4. The Amboy Guardian * September 14, 2016 EDITORIAL Don t Fault the Flag For Your Faults When standing for the flag during the Pledge of Allegiance or hearing the Star Spangled Banner being played, special attention should be paid to the words. For the best ever representation of the origin of the National Anthem, visit Fort HcHenry in Baltimore Harbor. It is the best representations of lawyer Francis Scott Key s negotiated the freedom of a hostage over 200 years ago when the British bombarded Fort McHenry in the War of 1812 and lost that battle.. After the battle when Francis Scott Key saw the American Flag still standing, it was the inspiration for the words of the Star Spangled Banner, adapted for the National Anthem in If you choose not to stand for the National Anthem, because of the symbolism of the flag, then don t blame the flag. Blame the individuals who dishonor what it stands for by their actions or words. This is not the first time that a well known figure did not stand of the National Anthem or salute the flag. I only wish that the people who don t stand for the National Anthem can tell us what country is utopian where everyone is treated equally and freely no matter what religion, ethnicity or sexual orientation they may be? What countries will give you the freedoms to destroy their national flag and get away with it without any consequences? -Not many. I don t care what anybody says. Racism or bigotry is not relegated to one specific ethnic group. Everyone knows that in every ethnic group, there are different classes of people who they look down on. When I worked for the phone company, I would talk to the janitor (who happened to be white) all the time. I was told by some of my coworkers that I shouldn t associate with him because they considered him low class. So you see, there are many ethnic groups that are Dawn s Early Light Francis Scott Key during the battle of Fort McHenry in Chesapeake Bay, Baltimore *1912 Painting by Edward Moran looked down upon. So when you see someone who is not adhering to the last two sentences of the National Anthem: O say does that starspangled banner yet wave O er the land of the free and the home of the brave? Here s a suggestion: have buttons made with those last two sentences on them. Whenever you find someone who is not adhering to those words, hand them that button. Just don t fault the flag. Just remember, the words of the National Anthem and the symbolism of the American Flag is what you should be following. To the pubic figures or anyone in general who chooses not to stand for the flag,we understand it is your right because we are in America. We understand it is your way of expressing discord with America. Just as you are expressing your freedom, we are expressing ours. I have visited other countries and some of them were very pleasant, beautiful and my experiences were nice. Then there are others that were frightening where the presence of armed guards were commonplace. All I can say is when I got back home to the United States, it was a relief and I would say, I m so glad that I m an American! C.M. & K.M. LOCAL PERSPECTIVE Are Smart Guns Safe? A recent letter praised smart guns as a means to improve safety, but didn t define safety. A gun that doesn t work as expected may not really be safe for its user. Smart guns are a concept not a reality. If it can be personified for one user it can be changed for another, or even disabled. A gun that works for its owner wouldn t stop any misuse, such as that shooting in Florida or other THE COMMUNITY VOICE places. This is why the smart gun is a fantasy. Those who advocate smart guns don t understand the technical problems. While one pistol is said to have this feature, it uses the least powerful cartridge. Does that mean it won t work with more powerful cartridges due to shock? Will it work in extreme heat or cold? Has this product been tested by an independent organization like Consumer s Reports? Who will verify the product claims of a manufacturer? Air bags have been placed in cars for decades, why are there so many problems being reported? What if they fail when they are needed? If one firearms manufacturer supports smart guns that implies they have a patent and would have a competitive advantage for their products. Businesses favor policies that reward them financially. 6 6. I want to thank the number crunchers and lead negotiators Pam Campbell & Pat Paradiso, the chair of the committee Jose Rodriguez, the committee of Manuel Nunez, Milady Tejada and (myself). I thank the Business Administrator Derek Jess who without his insight to many things that a resolution Contract Reached with the Perth Amboy Federation 9/8/16 Board of Education Meeting would not be possible. Later during the meeting a motion was made to approve the agreement. Board Member Jose Rodriguez said, I thank the committee for giving an incentive to give the best education possible. With that, all the teachers and staff in the audience applauded. Board Member Milady Tejada stated, It was a pleasure to be part of the committee. Board President Sam Lebreault added, Whenever we went to the AFT at headquarters it was very enlightening for all of us. During the roll call it was a unanimous vote to approve the contract. Later, during the public portion Perth Amboy Federation President Pat Paradiso spoke with gratitude to the Board and thanked them for reaching an agreement. Attend Public Meetings Have Your Voice Heard! Perth Amboy Educators Agree to New Contract with Health Insurance Cost Reductions Union Credits Community Involvement Leading to Reduction in Health Insurance Costs Press Release PERTH AMBOY - After working last school year without a contract, Perth Amboy educators are coming back to school this year with a new deal that reduces health insurance costs. The union voted Wednesday to accept the deal and the school board approved the agreement Thursday so the 1,600 members have a contract in place through June 30, Our members have been struggling to pay health insurance coverage costs for the past five years due to continual price increases, said Perth Amboy Federation- American Federation of Teachers President Patricia Paradiso, a third-grade teacher. Members needed to see a decrease in their health insurance contributions in order to actually starting bringing home more money in their paychecks and I m proud that this contract achieves that. The positive settlement is a result of thousands of conversations with union members, parents and students, according to negotiations chair Donna Tartza, a middle-school physical education teacher. We held rallies before and after school, went to Board of Education meetings to call for more negotiation dates, spoke to everyone in the community about the importance of having a fair contract for educators and collected signatures from thousands calling on the board to deal fairly, said Tartza. The union called for health insurance costs based on a percentage of salary, rather than on ever-increasing premiums. Our contributions will be stable for the duration of this contract, said Tartza. The percentage of salary contributed to health insurance is progressive based on salary so lowerpaid members pay a lower percentage for insurance up to a maximum of 8.6 percent for those at the top of the pay scale, she said. Significantly higher insurance rates for public workers in New Jersey were set in 2011 by statewide legislation. That legislation sunset last year, making is possible to negotiate lower costs, said Tartza. On the importance of the new contract Paradiso said, This new contract is a result of all of us in the union standing up for ourselves and the Perth Amboy community, especially parents and students, recognizing the value of educators having fair contracts. Having a competitive contract helps us recruit great new teachers and retain our experienced peers. I am proud that Perth Amboy Federation members are committed professional educators who demand to be treated fairly and want the best for our students and the district. ERALIDES E. 7 PERTH AMBOY - Police, Fire and EMS Personnel, Council President and Council Members, clergy, city officials, family and friends. I first want to thank my office, city departments and community partners for making this event possible. Today, we hold the 15th Anniversary of the 9/11 Memorial Ceremony in honor of thousands of people tragically lost on this very day and also in memory of our two own community members-- Isaias Rivera and Officer Richard Rodriguez. It is an honor for us to recognize their legacy every year since the day this monument was erected. Statement by Mayor Wilda Diaz Read at 9/11/16 15 th Anniversary of Ceremony Today, I look back and cannot believe that it has been 15 years!!! I was shocked when I was faced with the reality that Freshmen starting high school this year will be learning about 9/11 as a historical event that took place before they were born. While, I remember it as though it took place yesterday. And so, it is up to us to remember the value, the truth and the foundation of this great country. It s established law and founding principles stand as the moral compass, that has molded the lives of millions of Americans and other countries that gaze upon us, longing for freedom and democracy. Far too many times, we get caught up in our personal lives or we get carried away with certain distractions and we forget the importance and the value of our fellow neighbors. This country of strength, integrity and honor was not created by the judgement of one man, nor will it ever succeed if we are divided. Our success lies in OUR unity and a common vision. We will only triumph if we continue as ONE NATION!! UNDER GOD!!! UNITED!!! Today, we commemorate and celebrate the bravery that we saw from our firefighters, our police officers, EMTs, civilians and especially our honorary VOTE BY MAIL/VOTO POR CORREO heroes! Perth Amboy made a positive impact on Tuesday, September 11, 2001 and we have not stopped! I believe that the families that are raised right here are respectful, loyal, caring, proud and especially resilient. That day reminded us of the worth of our freedom in this country and the importance of valuing our loved ones. And that prayer is not just poetry or a cry for help, but a conversation of faith and hope. The sacrifices made by all demonstrated the determination of our city and our nation. This memorial service is September 14, 2016 * The Amboy Guardian.7 nothing short of recognizing everyone, from those who stood strong with encouragement, to the very people that defended and paid the ultimate price for our safety including two members of the Perth Amboy community and their loved ones. May our nation s history never be forgotten that of centuries ago, and especially that of 15 years ago. My prayer for us is that God would be placed first in the hearts of the people, that we love our fellow neighbor, as ourselves and that God continues to bless you, your families and the United States of America! 8 8. The Amboy Guardian * September 14, 2016 Originally Published in NJBlueNow, 9/6/16 By: Jay Martinez (A shovelman at the top of the bucket brigade) I had no problem driving on a deserted highway on Tuesday September 18, 2001 at about 1800 hrs. The weather was cool enough for me to exit my home dressed in Cami- trousers along with a long sleeve, black T-shirt. But after five minutes of this I realized I was the only weary traveler on the road. The exhilaration quickly vaulted out of my heart. In order to reach the financial district of NYC (an area I frequented thousands of times throughout my life) I chose to ride on the Pulaski Highway. As I approached the Jersey City and Hoboken side of that extension, tears fell from heaven. Seeing those rain droplets bounce off of my front window in conjunction with the choice of navigating along with no music, immediately struck a chord. I could still see the dismal, faintly lit Holland Tunnel lights try their best to light the way. If my vehicle could speak it would of stated, let s turn back I don t like aura here. The tunnel route took forever. I exited, my oh my what my eyes beheld. The greatest city on earth, the place where my mother met the American Dream, my birthplace, the Big Apple, Gotham, I Love NY, the Capitol of the world brought to its knees. The teardrops kept falling. Mine fell as well. I frantically searched for a place to park and finally stop my vehicles reluctance to turn back to Jersey. I grabbed my gear- water, some chow and pulled up my weapons belt. As I cleared approximately three NYC blocks, desolate turned into chaotic organization. I stopped once, twice, three times and pinched myself. The Recon Marine in me spoke. We are in America correct Jay? Perimeter gates manned by Warriors adorned in Camouflage flanked by other warriors dressed identically the same. Eyes possessed meaning and intent, even the security dogs had the look. M-16 s pointed into the dark, these small arms were symbolic, and the statement was clear and poignant. We will find those responsible for this atrocity and we will fight back. Where are you, come out and fight like men! I finally cleared several checkpoints; I did my best attempting to greet others. The best I could muster was to meet eyeballs. I was now approaching the famous ground zero, tears and nighttime fell and out of somewhere someone handed me a white mask. I donned it, I kept moving. I reached from a distance what looked like a miniature skyscraper; it was not, it was a heap of rubble, stories high. I stood in dismay, I pinched myself, my heart reminded me, this is America. America the beautiful, at this time Lady liberty had tears draped all over her face. At some point I searched for my purpose to come here and assist as a fellow Law Enforcement Officer. My inner man longed to be a U.S. Marine, my heart longed to be a 0321 and go to a foreign land with my threeteammates and do my job in locating who had masterminded this cowardly act. Ultimately I did track white buckets. White buckets and shovels. I followed their direction until I turned the corner and looked heavenwards. What my eyes beheld words will fail! Ground Zero, my heart sank, my tears rolled, my fists clenched, my heart raced, my eyes stared, my spirit called upon my Almighty God to make sense of this to me. Hate my beloved son, this is what hate is What My Eyes Beheld capable of becoming. I shook it off. I moved towards a convoy of men dressed in dark uniforms, white buckets everywhere. Welcome to the bucket brigade Marine an LAPD Firefighter stated, how did you know, we know our types he replied. We shook hands. I could not stand at the back of this formation; my eyes could see that a certain type of person was needed to climb a steep, high, heap of rubble. A job fit for me. I grabbed a shovel and set aside the bucket, I would now fill buckets from the top not pass them. As I moved there, everything came to a screeching halt. A body was located, but not just any ordinary body. This one was unique, this one was found facing the fury, carnage, confusion and the hell of this sinkhole. His body was torn into two pieces. He was delicately placed into a body bag and given a heroes honor ceremony. The NYPD Chaplain, grey hair, grey mustache, stout shoulders, eagles eyes with spectacles spoke words I could hardly make out. The constant clanging of a titanic machine smashing the earth every second with the fury of a hammer wielded by Jehovah kept me from listening intently. Nonetheless, as the rig drove by we all set aside our tools and saluted. We saluted amidst white smoke that rose to the heavens. I realized that underneath my black Cadillac s the earth was alive, people were alive. Work resumed. What my eyes beheld at this time once danced in my head for a long period of time. My shovel dug, dug and dug. It collected nameplates, family photos, telephones, personal mementos, the heavenly tears kept falling, and mine never stopped either. At some point the tip of my shovel discovered a FDNY truck door. I didn t budge it, once I announced its discovery FDNY Firefighters lifted it high amidst the teardrops like the Stanley Cup. I stood in amazement; this experience, this entire experience has overwhelmed me for a lifetime, truly Godsend. In closing, upon leaving the bucket brigade, I ate on a small vessel that night/morning. I met workers from all over the world and as far as France. I gathered my own personal photos that night and am reluctant to look at them to often, I m afraid of what those images might rekindle in my soul. But all in all my time at Ground Zero has inspired my soul and has always been a true blessing in my career, with the help of my Brother Richard Martinez my shovel now sits at the 911 NYC Museum for the world to see. My Mother would be so proud of her baby son.

Moments from Perth Amboy s 15 th Anniversary Memorial Ceremony PERTH AMBOY PAFD Chief Abraham Pitre spoke emotionally about being dispatched to the World Trade Center to look for his good friend, Firefighter Richard Rodriguez who was not responding to communications. Pitre recalled that he had fought many fires before and had sustained severe burns in one of them but had never been afraid. This time was different. He was told to have two forms of ID on him one on the upper part of his body and one on the lower part of his body because of this particular dangerous situation. I was very scared and when I called my family, I wasn t sure if this would be the last call that I would be making to them. Captain Roman McKeon, Detective and Acting Deputy Chief PAPD spoke about Police Officers being unfairly targeted in Social Media and that the good things the Police do that go unnoticed. He stressed that the Police are here to serve the public. 13 South Amboy Council Praises Fed Up Event By: Joseph L. Kuchie SOUTH AMBOY - South Amboy s city council and Mayor Fred Henry praised the recent Fed Up! overdose & opioid awareness event that was held at the South Amboy Senior Center on August 31st. The event, put together by South Amboy resident Kim Seber and her team, was made to bring the community together to help cope with the loss of loved ones due to accidental overdose and teach residents about the ongoing opioid problem happening throughout the area. Opioids have tragically taken the lives of a number of New Jersey citizens, including 22-year-old South Amboy resident Jesse Flynn this past May. The evening included a number of speakers from the city, tables with resources on how to get help, and a candle light vigil. Mayor Henry explained how powerful the event was and how important it is to continue the fight against the problem. It was a very emotional experience to hear people who were directly affected by someone either overdosing, committing suicide, whatever the case might be and hearing their stories, Mayor Henry said. This is a problem that is not going to go away by itself. We need to deal with it. These volunteers that were involved in this wish to continue having different types of meetings and we are very much on board in supporting them, he continued. There are obviously a lot of families that are affected, a lot of information that can be given out to these families and also to the people that are using. We want to help them and we ll do our best to do so. It was just so touching and I think the participation level, the vendors, the services that were brought out, the people that participated, it was hard to sit in that audience that night and not tear up, Business Administrator Camille Tooker said. I thought it went very well. I d like to thank Kim Seber and all of her people.
