There are no ED s on some of these very important traits. Considering the safety of the crew and the ease of handling the cattle, we feel it s well worth our time to score and cull the animals that don t meet the standards we have set. The performance, efficiency, and meat quality will improve with docile cattle. There is no such thing as a perfect cow, and you have to decide which traits you want or need. few years ago we started a program of keeping records on the temperament and udder qualities of our females. We score them from 1 to 5 in each category. UDDER 1 Very good. 2 bove average. 3 verage. 4 Capable of raising a calf. 5 non functional animal. Many years ago my dad, Don, told me We were going to breed cattle with these functional traits in mind, even if this meant not selling another bull....mark DeBoo In the notes of all the bulls selling, we talked about pedigrees in hopes of helping our customers understand our breeding program. We strongly believe that our customers greatly benefit from buying line-bred bulls. The benefits include: 1.) If you like what you see in a bull or cow family, by line breeding it intensifies these traits. line-bred bull will breed more true to himself than a non-line bred bull. 2.) Line breeding intensifies all traits, good and bad. If genetically there were a problem, it would show up in our herd. We would identify the problem and eliminate the use of these traits. 3.) The cows and bulls that we have talked about in the notes have already gone through many generations of line breeding and put through a very rigid test. To pass the test they need to be of moderate frame, easy fleshing, adequate performance, structurally correct, and good udder quality. The bulls must be very masculine.

Diamond D ngus would like to thank all of our past and future customers for believing in and supporting our program. Some might say we are out of the main stream. We have chosen to put a lot more emphases on functional and economic traits rather than ED s. During the 1980 s, cattle were being bred to look like race horses all legs and no guts. Many of the functional traits were left behind in the race for big numbers. We did not follow this trend; instead, choosing to breed for just classic ngus traits. While we have not bred cattle for carcass numbers, our ultrasound numbers are very good. This is an indication that just good basic ngus have always had good meat quality. Our commercial industry needs great cattle, not cattle with great numbers. Breeding cattle with great numbers is easy. Breeding great cattle is a challenging task. u Consistency - Diamond D ngus genetics will breed more true - - due to the many years of intensive line breeding. u Calving ease - We have always put emphases on good calving ease. We typically will not use a bull on cows that we would not also use on first calf heifers. u Carcass - Ultrasound has proven that DD cattle excel in the grass fed beef industry, and as always, are still suitable for the feed lot. Diamond D ngus cattle have proven to be consistently superior in tenderness. u Efficiency - For many years, the cows and calves have been weighed at weaning and condition scores are given. Typically our cows are weaning calves weighing 50% of their own weight or greater. We prefer a 4-frame cow weighing 1200 to 1300 pounds in good flesh. u Longevity - Most traits can be compared to a chapter in a book, but longevity is the entire book. Our old 580, 368 cow family would be in 95% of our pedigrees. His mother stayed in the herd for 16 yrs, grandmother 580 for 20 yrs and great grandmother 368 for 22 yrs. On the sire side, our 21X bull has proven to be one of the best calving ease bulls I ve ever seen and he traces to our old 779 cow family. The 779 cow stayed in production for 15 yrs. Great calving ease on the 76E bull and, like in most of DD cattle, great temperament. We ll never have a huge amount of influence from this bull because he froze his testicles in a cold, northern Montana wind. They have all worked very well. We have the same goal in mind for the red herd as we have for our black herd. We just like good, basic ngus cattle. Cows that will have a good calf every year on time and stay sound for 10 or more lactations. From what I see in the BB influence cattle, I am sure Roy had the same goal in mind. u We saved a red bull last year sired by BB 5236 BBRED I am very impressed with this young bull. We entered 21X s numbers and asked the database to find all the bulls that were as good as, or better than, the 21X bull. In the entire ngus breed, there were only two bulls that were better in these two, new categories. In the past, the merican ngus ssociation has had many numbers to measure production. Cattle with the most production also require the most inputs. It is very good to see the association develop a number that could help with profit, not just production. THE DIMOND D DVNTGE More fertile and will cover more cows. Will continue to gain weight through first breeding season. No bulls feet or legs ruined due to hot feed. They are known for their longevity and the excellent maternal traits that they pass on generation after generation.
