2 Twinings, Stories and Dances from the Third World from THE CAMEL AND THE JACKAL SUN.ERGOS SPINS MYTHS OF WORLD In the guise of two ancient story-tellers, Sun.Ergos gives us a fascinating glimpse of our past in a collection of folk-tales from around the world the effect is spellbinding We learn lessons of unity and cooperation,in flattery and conceit, or we just learn why the moon renews itself, but man does not. What acts as a refreshing vehicle for all this wisdom is a good supply of wit." THE CALGARY HERALD FOR GRADES K - 8 LENGTH: 50-MINUTES PLUS QUESTION PERIOD SPECIAL CURRICULUM APPLICATIONS: Folklore, anthropology, dance, geography, heritage, culture, story-telling, social studies. FESTIVAL AND FAMILY AUDIENCE VERSION IS ALSO AVAILABLE IN ONE-HOUR AND 90- MINUTE PRESENTATION (WITH 15-MINUTE INTERMISSION FOR FAMILY AUDIENCES) TWININGS, FOLK-TALES AND DANCES FROM AROUND THE WORLD, explore man's sense of with, humour and wisdom as SUN.ERGOS celebrates the variety and unity of traditional tales and dances from around the world. SUN.ERGOS weaves fables, dance and myths from Asia, North and South America and Europe, Africa and Australia into an entertainment for all ages. These artists from the Foothills of Western Canada have won accolades from critics at the Edinburgh, Swansea, Edmonton, Vancouver and Dance in Canada Festivals for their remarkable multi-cultural productions of theatre and dance. Moving the Human Spirit! "TWININGS professionally done and renewed fond memories of childhood stories The two performers combine music and dance with fables that go back thousands of year [bringing] animal characters to life." THE EMERY WEAL, Calgary, Alberta
3 INFORMATION SHEET Celebrating the differences! Recognizing the similarities! Working Together - Moving the Human Spirit! TITLE OF SHOW(S): LENGTH OF SHOW(S): TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS: TWININGS, STORIES AND DANCES FROM THE THIRD WORLD 50-minutes, plus 10-minute Question Period [see enclosed tech sheet] THEME [describe in one sentence]: All peoples around the world have common feelings, ideas, ideals and values. CONTENT [brief description of pieces in show]: Humorous stories and high-jinks and perky dance from developing and Third World countries, such as Guatemala, Senegal, Thailand, India and from such peoples as the Aboriginals of Australia. GOAL [what is the purpose of this show]: To witness that all peoples around the world have similar feelings, values and characters at which we can laugh, ideas that make us stop and think and a diversity of expressions to celebrate. POINT OF VIEW OF ARTISTS [brief description]: Both Bob and Dana feel strongly that by exposing themselves and audiences to the commitments and values of other societies, we will be better able to understand our own, and that we will be more compassionate towards those of others in order to break down prejudice and confront ignorance, while enriching our lives. CLASSIFICATION [i.e.: ADULT, FESTIVAL, FAMILY, YOUNG AUDIENCE]: TWININGS works well with Festival and Family audiences and, in shortened versions, has been very successful in schools and children's festivals as well. We have discovered that adults love the show and often even when it has been booked as a festival piece for young audiences, the adults who come are as delighted as the young people, if not more so. This show has often been enjoyed by non-english speaking audiences around the world. PRESENTATION [skills used to present show]: The most notable feature of TWININGS is the costuming. Dressed as two Shaman, the healer-story-teller-wise men of tribes around the world, Bob and Dana are covered with fringes, crocheted panels, headdresses, arm and leg bands, beading, jewelry from the Bedouin, from the Gold Coast of Africa, from Nigeria, patterned body suits with tatoo-designs from the pottery of the Navajo, the Zuni, the Aboriginal. The costumes weigh in at 30 lbs. a piece, including layers of capes in silks from India, Tailand and China. The set is brightly painted in reds and browns with designs abstracted from the folk costumes of peoples who have immigrated to Canada from all over the world. Music comes from the countries of the actual stories themselves: India, Africa, Guatemala and some was specially composed by John Thompson of the Banff Fine Arts Centre for the reconstruction of dances that are over 10,000 years old. Movement is an integral part of the characterizations as well as the individual, folk-dances. TARGET AUDIENCE [i.e.: Seniors, multi-cultural groups, etc.]: Usually the whole family enjoys this show, age 4/5 and up. Multicultural groups, especially from developing countries and seniors greatly enjoy the show. CAST [see Bios]: Robert Greenwood (actor) and [Mr.] Dana Luebke (dancer-actor)
