Planning principles from the master plan developed by DPZ founders Andres Duany and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk include walkable streets and passageways, shade gardens and rooftop landscapes, formed by a collection of discrete architectural projects and art installations in a diverse but coherent fabric. Johnston Marklee s façade arcade frames the north end of Paradise Plaza, which terminates the new central walk street of Paseo Ponti. The paseo spans the extent of the four-block development and the new plaza includes a garden with a site-specific art installation. The JML façade is defined by a structural frame which forms the curtain wall at the ground level, defines the open-air arcade on the second level, and extends as a parapet to frame the rooftop garden and the sky beyond, visible from the length of the four-block paseo. The rationalist grid is wrapped in a concave curved stainless-steel cladding system of reflective and abraded panels. Stripped of ornament, the curved surfaces are modeled and amplified by natural light. The consistency of detail from the plaza to the city scale reflects the presence of the building as part of the larger urban fabric. Paradise Plaza, 151 NE 41st Street EUGENIA JABLON MURAL, 2016 DASH East façade facing NE 4th Court We need freshness in our lives, We can t seek for values in the past, we need to look for values in the future. Like ivy that grows along the street, Nuage engages with buildings and facades, creating a natural relationship with the surrounding architecture. The sun shines through the steel and colored glass structure that mimics cloud apertures, casting graphic shadows that vibrate with blues and greens like stained-glass windows crossed by the sun in cathedrals. Native plants envelop Nuage, with trees jutting through the structure to the sky. Over time, Nuage will gain depth and patina, vines will colonize the system, encircling the quiet ponds, plant beds and freeform concrete seating arranged along the path. Mineral and heavy, these shapes contrast the stainless-steel roof onto which the environment, the sky, the vegetation are reflected. The reflection resonates with the changes of day, with the seasons, inviting relaxation, reflection, and respite from Miami s bright sun. The Meeting Bowls are a public art project by the Spanish collective mmmm... They are temporary and playful urban furniture that encourages friendly dialogue between strangers and creates a social place for gathering. These inviting large objects shaped like bowls can accommodate up to eight people each. The project, first shown in the U.S in Times Square (NY) in 2011, and then in Arlington County, Virginia earlier this year, is designed to remind us of the magic of interacting with strangers in public places. The Cultural Center of Spain in Miami (CCEMiami) in collaboration with Miami Design District, Arlington Cultural Affairs and Acción Cultural Española (AC/E); present the Meeting Bowls during Art Basel Miami Jade Alleyway between Paseo Ponti and 41st Street Also launching the program is a newly announced gift from renowned German artist Thomas Bayrle, a monumental steel sculpture commissioned for the artist s debut solo U.S. museum exhibition. The public sculpture initiative enables this major work from the museum s collection to remain on long-term view in ICA Miami s former space in the Design District s Moore Building. Its backdrop is a re-creation of a Miami Beach bus stop with all its signage and advertisements missing. In its midst, on the bench, is a skeleton, lying on its back, inhabiting this artificial sphere of public space. A constant trickle of water lands on its head and forms a pool below. The skeleton figure is of no particular gender or age. It serves as a representation of anyone. Paradise Plaza, 151 NE 41st Street JUNGLE-IZED is an interactive multi-sensory art installation that transports you to the heart of the Amazon Rainforest, encouraging a conversation with nature and heightening awareness of the environmental impact of climate change. Developed along the 80th meridian West, which connects Miami with the western edge of the Ecuadorian and Peruvian Amazon, JUNGLE-IZED creates a jungle-toconcrete jungle link by re-inviting Nature into the city. The installation can be experienced by downloading the JUNGLE-IZED Miami App on an ios or Android device and listening via earbuds or headphones. One will have the sensation of stepping out of time, of disconnecting with the ephemeral sense of time and pace of the city, and re-syncing with the eternal time format that we carry within ourselves as human beings; the pace of Nature.A film component, shot in the heart of the Amazon Rainforest, is projected each night after dusk among various buildings in the Miami Design District. Shown on negative film, it reveals the invisible energy source that exists in the animals, in the air, in the trees, in the spirits of the tribal inhabitants of the Amazon. It references the idea of provoking memory triggers and flashbacks to a previous time and place, when Nature was here among us. It interprets the wonders of Nature and explores the notion of longing for our lost environment and what was once our human landscape. At each location of the film projection, viewers will be invited to take part in a simple collective action. By enabling the negative function on their mobile devices and pointing their cameras at the film, they will be able to reveal the positive version of the film, and symbolically make a step forward in bringing back the positive in our conversation with Nature. JUNGLE-IZED is available in the Miami Design District from December 7, 2017 to January 15, Downloadable through the Apple Store for iphone and ipad, and through the Google Play Store for Android devices. JUNGLE-IZED is a project created in collaboration with The Analogue Foundation. Featuring Amazon rainforest sound environments recorded by Francisco López. Mobile App powered by Motive.io, in collaboration with the GPS Museum Lab. Film by Stephan Crasneanscki. Multiple locations on NE 41st Street between N Miami Avenue & NE 2nd Avenue WHITE RAIN This winter is bringing snow to Miami for one of the few times in recorded history. When this weather first surprised the sunshine state in 1774, locals had no words to describe the phenomenon before their eyes other than extraordinary white rain. Now, 243 years later, the shimmering material that ornaments trees every holiday season silver tinsel features in Charlap Hyman & Herrero s rendition of this majestic natural occurrence. Cladding the trunks and decking the fronds of the palms in Miami s Design District, tinsel brings the archetypal imagery of winter to a summery climate, and a northern German decorating custom to an American beach town. It is this comedy of contrasts that 2017 s holiday decorations exhibit for passersby. The glistening tinsel bears as much resemblance to the snow it references as to the synthetic palette of 1970s Miami. Far beyond the traditional light trimming, the palms have been transformed into giant reflective towers like those lining Collins Avenue. The silver tinsel at once evokes the sincerity of childhood holiday memories and brings back the frenzied ecstasy of Disco. Embellishing and recreating nature, holiday decorations manage to highlight the divergence between the natural and the man-made. White Rain suggests that, in Miami, these decorations are perhaps best accompanied by a sense of humor. Moore Building, 191 NE 40th Street HAITIAN HERITAGE MUSEUM Featuring the work of Alexis Peskine, the Alexis Peskine: Power Figures Solo Exhibition presents a rich background through his work, in which he explores both the Black Experience and the world of the refugee, forced to exist between fixed boundaries of state and identity. Growing up in Paris, Peskine speaks of witnessing institutional racism and a severe lack of multi-cultural representation in the media and public sphere. His practice, reflective of this, focuses on the complexity of themes impacting people from the African Diaspora. His signature pieces are large-scale portraits rendered by the painstaking process of hammering nails of different lengths and diameters, with pin-point accuracy into wood to create breath-taking composite images. Opening Exhibition: Wednesday December 5 at 6:30 pm NE 2nd Avenue, Suite 105C / t Experience the grand opening of Miami s newest venue for cuttingedge contemporary art in the Miami Design District. With more than double the exhibition space in its new permanent home, the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami presents a bold inaugural program that reflects the museum s commitment to championing new narratives in contemporary art and to providing a platform for the exchange of art and ideas. 10 JUAN CARLOS MALDONADO ART COLLECTION (JCMAC) The Juan Carlos Maldonado Art Collection (JCMAC) initiates a new cycle in its exhibition program with Constructing Constructivism. The new selection from JCMAC s outstanding collection explores the role of geometric abstraction in the mid-twentieth century within an extensive international context. With works by such diverse artists as Ilya Bolotowsky, Alexander Calder, Jesús Soto, Leon Polk Smith, Gego, Kenneth Noland, Gerd Leufert, among many others, the exhibition looks into a wide range of philosophical, painterly and conceptual approaches to the geometric image during a time of increased global awareness. Featuring paintings, sculptures and drawings from JCMAC s exceptional survey of abstract artworks, Constructing Constructivism advances the possibilities of global integration by focusing on mutual influences and exchanges among artists and movements across three continents. On display December 4-10 from 9am to 4pm. Free admission NE 2nd Avenue, Suite 201 / t LE FRENCH DESIGN, NO TASTE FOR BAD TASTE LOCUST PROJECTS Nancy Davidson is a New York-based sculptor known for her outsized, anthropomorphic inflatables. For forty years, her work has unapologetically addressed issues of power, sexuality and femininity through an embrace of the subversive potential of humor and the absurd. From November 2017 through January 2018, Locust Projects will present the artist s first solo exhibition in Miami, entitled p e r Sway. Populated with giant, inflated structures, knots, legs and swaying figures, Davidson s immersive installation explores ritual and theater, and creates a space in which the place of privilege is taken over by parodies of power. Miami-based artist Pepe Mar will inaugurate a new body of work in Locust Projects back project space. Creating a series of custom textiles from images of his past works, Mar will collage this material, sew and paint it, and obliterate areas, bringing together disparate bodies of work from along the course of his career while making entirely new images from the recombined originals. The end result will be a largescale Gesamtkunstwerk overflowing from the walls, floor and ceiling of the room, collapsing his entire practice-past to present-into one comprehensive work of art. Locust Projects presents the U.S. premiere of Whithervanes, a neurotic, early worrying system featuring four-foot tall internet-connected headless chickens by Detroit-based experimental design duo rootoftwo (Cezanne Charles & John Marshall). Perched on rooftops around the city, these weathervanes scan the Internet for alarmist keywords changing direction and color in response to the climate of fear propagated by the media. The public can add to the escalation of fear or attempt to counteract it by sending the messages using either #keepcalm or #skyfalling. Tuesday, December 5, 7-10pm Reception for the featured artists features performances and interventions in conjunction with the exhibitions. To mark 40 years of dedication and support for design, VIA, in collaboration with Institut français, present the exhibition Le French Design, No Taste For Bad Taste. It is symbolic, showcasing a selection of 40 French Design masterpieces. It has an attractive setting with original scenography devised by designer Jean-Charles de Castelbajac. It has prestigious sponsors, a think tank of 40 internationally renowned figures. It has a signature motif, the excellence of French art de vivre, embodied by iconic pieces of furniture. It has strong support of VIA, the Institut français and more. Le French Design, No Taste For Bad Taste will be presented around the world for major international design events. After a stopover in Milan (for the Salone del Mobile), in Venice (for the Biennale) and lately in Montréal (for the World Design Summit), the exhibition will be featured in Miami Design District, Paradise Plaza. Paradise Plaza, 151 NE 41st Street, Suites 119 & 141 Extended Gallery Hours during Art Week 2017: Wednesday, December 6 - Friday, December 9: 10am 6pm. Palm Court, 140 NE 39th Street, Second Floor, Suite 239 t Black, White & Brown, multidisciplinary artist Derrick Adams first solo exhibition with Primary, joins new and unavailable works from exhibits and performances with MoMA/Ps1, The MET, Performa. Installed in an immersive black and white environment, the objects converse within a bold Op-art interior space. Exhibition work incorporates geometric black & white patterns, some with a variation of shade, making reference to the black body as a conduit or apparatus that adds to the performative mechanism in the work. Consistent within the language of Adams work is an implementation of cultural identity, social-political commentary, & inherent grid structures. Demonstrating power and reverence, imagery is presented against the hard grid of the interior patterns as an element of engagement with formalism, making it more contemporary, as it be as it becomes intertwined with cultural perspective as content. Opening reception on December 5 from 5 8 p.m. 15 NE 39th Street / t

12 SWAMPSPACE WHITE CUBE Swampspace presents Kiki Valdes: The Drawing Chronicles. The recent works of Kiki Valdes are a maniacal storm of ink on paper. The drawings are delicate yet aggressive compositions of comedic abstractions and figurative visions of the artist s recurring dreams. Mr. Valdes skillfully appropriates art history themes of the ethereal muse, captivating love triangles, social angst and piercing anguish. His ability to convey depth captivates viewers with a unique and powerful sense of emotional engagement. The work leaves us satisfied with our desire for beauty, humor and social relevance. Also on display are Sharif Slimting s Sofas of Little Havana photography exhibition. Opening reception on December 5th from 6 to 9 p.m. with a book signing and reading by Richard Boch for his new book The Mudd Club (Feral House, Book & Books) N Miami Avenue / t THIERRY GOLDBERG GALLERY Thierry Goldberg Gallery is pleased to present Tschabalala Self s first solo exhibition in Miami, Florida. As concepts of blackness and femininity continually evolve, Self has dedicated herself to naming the phenomenon that forcibly frames our contemporary understanding of the black body in a collective fantasy. Tschabalala Self (b. 1990, New York), currently lives and works in New York and New Haven. She holds an MFA from the Yale School of Art, and a BA from Bard College. Her work was previously exhibited in Trigger: Gender as a Tool and a Weapon at The New Museum (New York, NY); A Constellation at the Studio Museum in Harlem (New York, NY) and in A Shape That Stands Up at the Hammer Museum (Los Angeles, CA). Paradise Plaza, 151 NE 41st Street, Suite 133 White Cube presents an off-site project by Ibrahim Mahama, one of the most exciting artists to emerge from Ghana in recent years. Known for his large-scale installations incorporating jute sacks previously used to transport cocoa beans and charcoal, the project features Non-Orientable Nkansa, a towering sculpture comprised of hundreds of shoemaker boxes. These small wooden objects are made from structural materials found in the city and used to contain tools for polishing and repairing shoes, which were then obtained by the artist and his collaborators through a process of negotiation and exchange. Gathered together here in a single, monumental unit, the containers are crammed with other re-purposed items such as heels, hammers and needles, all of which are part of Mahama s ongoing inquiry into the life of materials and their dynamic potential. 13 + PANERAI THE MWABWINDO SCHOOL Recipient of the 2017 Panerai Design Miami/ Visionary Award Design Miami/ is pleased to announce the Mwabwindo School as the recipient of the 2017 Panerai Design Miami/ Visionary Award. In its fourth year, the annual award is sponsored by Officine Panerai and celebrates significant contributions to the field of design. For the first time in the award s history, the recipient is a collaborative project, conceived by 14+ Foundation, New York; Selldorf Architects, New York; and artist Rashid Johnson, with the addition of newlycommissioned furniture by Christ & Gantenbein, Basel. Mwabwindo School, which will open in 2018 and serve primary school students in rural southern Zambia, will be the second school in the region developed and operated by 14+ Foundation, an organization committed to increasing education accessibility in rural African communities, where travel distance to school is one of the biggest impediments to quality education. The school s design by Selldorf Architects, New York, is inspired by the tall trees on the surrounding savanna that serve as shaded gathering spaces. The complex will comprise mud-brick classrooms for 200 students arranged around courtyards and covered by a large corrugated metal roof canopy, housing for eight teachers, a vegetable garden, and playing fields. Handmade bricks have been fabricated on site and buildings will be constructed by local masons, providing employment and training opportunities. Rainwater will be collected for use in the garden, solar panels will provide energy for the school and teachers housing, and a windmill will power the facility s well water. The design will also incorporate a mural installation to be created on-site by contemporary artist Rashid Johnson in collaboration with Mwabwindo School students, emphasizing the importance of art-based educational projects and programs. Design Miami/ has asked the Basel-based architecture and design firm Christ & Gantenbein to contribute to the project by providing children s furniture to outfit the school s art classroom. The Mwabwindo Series is an adaptation of Christ & Gantenbein s Athens series which was inspired by a modest wooden chopping block the designers happened upon in an Athens market. Based on a simple vernacular object, the stools and tables in this set are made of wooden blocks held together by long cylindrical wooden pegs, without the use of hardware or glue. Prototypes of the Mwabwindo Series have been installed at Design Miami/ in an exhibition dedicated to the school that will include models of the building, details of the construction and information about the student body. The Mwabwindo School embraces the spirit of the Panerai Design Miami/ Visionary Award perhaps more uniquely than any other project in the award s history, offering continued, tangible, and lasting impact to build community through design. The collaborators, all of whom are donating their services to the project, are committed to the cause of providing not only an inspired place for learning, but also promoting sustainable resource use, arts education, and community building through design.

This year works by Sara Flynn, Richard Smith and Lionel Wendt are presented within the unique space of the LOEWE Miami Design District store, which was designed around a monumental 18th century granary from Portugal. Made from stone and wood, its presence within the building encapsulates LOEWE s celebration of past, present and future, and provides a resonant setting for the work of these three artists. Jonathan Anderson said: Art and craft are always at the center of my creative process and these exhibitions are an exciting way of exploring artists that are important to me. I love the unexpected things that happen when people from completely different worlds are brought together. The exhibition runs from December 4, 2017 to February 4, NE 39th Street, Suite 102 / t MARNI Isabel Marant opened her 5th in the US and 1st store in Miami s Design District, a bespoke address in a sun-drenched, artistic and creative city. December 6 11am-8pm December 7 11am-8pm December 8 11am-10pm December 9 11am-10pm December 10 12pm-6pm Palm Court, 140 NE 39th Street / t December is the month for thinking about others, and Marni celebrates it with the presentation of its new Christmas charity project, Marni Visitors. The reflection on Play, which has always been an integral part of the Marni aesthetic paradigm, is the starting point for this voyage of discovery. It is expressed through a series of personalities who seem to have come from another planet, where simplicity and light-heartedness reign supreme. Where every being moves suspended between fairy tale and abstraction, in an irresistible mix of fairy-tale elements, geometry and pure colour. These are the Marni Visitors, marionettes made in painted wood and colourful resins, created for children but designed to make adults smile as well. Half way between toy and sculpture, these stylised human and animal figures are a homage to the innocence that lies within us all and that Marni designs continuously aspire towards. The fascination for the past and for tradition lives on, not just through the rediscovery of playthings from the past such as marionettes, but also through the revival of the techniques typical of the costume jewellery in the Marni archives. Techniques revived through the Visitors, through the skilled hands of the Colombian artisans who collaborate, as ever, on the brand s special projects. The Marni Visitors will be in the Marni boutique from December 2nd and for the whole Christmas holidays period. Proceeds will be donated to the Piccolo Principe association ( which helps disadvantaged children aged 0 to 5, through the Orso Baloo community, within the Province of Milan NE 2nd Avenue, Suite 100 / t MAX MARA Join Max Mara for a special evening as they celebrate Wrapped in Luxury, an exhibition featuring icons wearing our signature Max Mara coats. Champagne and light bites will be served. Palm Court, 140 NE 39th Street, Suite 104 / t Originally, art was something that only adorned the walls of the rich or royal, it was beyond the means of an ordinary person to commission an artist or purchase a painting for their home. Anyone who was interested in art would have to be content with a visit to a public art gallery or museum. But the twentieth century brought us advanced color printing technology, and this gave birth to an entire new industry of lithographs, prints, and posters. For the first time, people were able to purchase affordable reproductions of their favorite artworks and hang them in their homes. It was not long before people began hanging art in offices, lobbies, and even restrooms. The 1980 s heralded a new era of art in the form of graffiti, and we thought that this was the very last stage of bringing art out of the galleries and museums and into the public domain. But we were wrong. There was one last step to go Art to Wear. Traditionally jewelry was always regarded as an adornment, worn to beautify the body, but Yvel jewelry has now entered a new realm. Always in the forefront of design and innovation, Yvel has created striking jewelry treasures that are themselves, true works of art. Yvel s Art to Wear enables collectors and admirers to carry on their bodies, a precious work of art. Worn in any place, at any time, Yvel s Art to Wear inspires those that come in contact with it, and uplifts the world around us. Palm Court, 140 NE 39th Street, Suite 203 / t
