1 MATHRU SANDESH Bulletin of Rotary Bangalore Rajarajeshwari Nagar Centennial R OTARY INTERNAT IONAL ANNOUNCES $ 8.4M GRANT TO FIGHT POLIO IN NIGE RIA Rotary International, on 22nd October 2014, announced a grant of 8.4 million dollars to Nigeria to assist the country s polio fight. In a statement issued in Dakar, Rotary said the grant came ahead of the Oct. 24 observance of the World Polio Day. It stated that the grant was part of Rotary s broader contribution of 44.7 million dollars to end the paralysing disease worldwide. It added that it would be used by UNICEF and the World Health Organisation (WHO) to support high quality polio immunisation campaigns in Nigeria. Rotary pointed out that with a 90 per cent reduction in polio cases, Nigeria was close to ending the transmission of the polio virus. The funding commitment follows Nigeria s 90 per cent reduction in polio cases in 2014, compared with 2013 cases, with only six cases recorded to date in 2014, the s t a t e m e n t noted. It said that Nigeria reported the highest number of polio cases in the world in 2012, adding that along with Pakistan and Afghanistan, Nigeria is one of only three countries where the wild polio virus never stopped. We will not stop fighting this disease until every child in Nigeria and the world is safe from this crippling disease, Dr Tunji Funsho, Rotary s National Polio Plus Chair for Nigeria, said. Soon after, Ann Chitra and her team lit up some 60 lamps, while all the lights were put out. It was indeed a splendid visual. This was then followed by a sound and light dance, enthusiasticially choreographed and presented by Annets Shreya, Sunaina, Samskriti, and Vibha. Last but not the least, t h e r e was a s t e l l a r Dandiya performance by our Anns S m i t h a, Padma, Vidya, Savitha, Latha, and Ms. Jaishree Charan. I must mention that everyone was dressed to the hilt, especially the Anns. Check out the photos!!!

3 VOLUME 6, ISSUE 4 rotary rajarajeshwari nagar news P A G E 3 WATER TAPS PROJECT - GOVT. SCHOOL BANGARAPPANAGARA Our club has always been supportive of the Govt. School in Bangarappa Nagar. The club has endeavored to fulfill many of the school s needs such as student supplies (note books, bags, pencil cases, lunch bags, etc.), railings for all parapet walls, library cupboards, computers, so on and so forth. This year, on August 15, during the Independence Day Celebration in the school, the principal r eques t e d our Club to p r o v i d e hand-wash facilities for the stud e n t s. There were no taps, whatsoever in the school. And so, our Club took up the initiative, led by Rtn. Ravikumar. He donated tiles and delegated a set of plumbers to the project. Rtn. Srinath Babu, through Sai Ceramics, supplied the pipes and other fittings. This project was ably supported in many ways through other Rotarians too: BG Suresh, S. P r a s a d a R a o, S h y a m p r a s a d, Balasubramanyam, Shivakumar, Suresh Warrier, Madhavaraya, Shyam Kadur, and Narayan Raghavan. Overall, 6 taps were provided with a long, extended basin. A formal inauguration was done on 2nd Oct to coincide with Gandhi Jayanti. Oct 2 was also the day that the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Campaign Clean India) was launched. It is a national level campaign by the Government of India covering 4041 statutory towns to clean the streets, roads and infrastructure of the country. GLOVES / BAGS PROJECT ON OCTOBER 2ND Contribute Generously! To the Rotary Foundation This campaign was officially launched on the said day at Rajghat, New Delhi, w h e r e P r i m e M i n i s - ter Narendra Modi himself wielded the broom and cleaned a road. The same c a m p a i g n was initiated in RR Nagar by Bangalore University in col- laboration with BBMP. Our club joined their efforts by supplying the entire team (over 1000 students from across colleges in Bangalore) with gloves and face masks. This project was inaugurated by the VC of Bangalore University, Prof. B. Thimme Gowda. The team essentially cleaned up various areas of our neighborhood.

4 P A G E 4 M A T H R U S A N D E S H rotary rajarajeshwari nagar news Golu at ann chitralekha narayan s residence It was a fun filled evening as is wont every year. Ann Chitra invited the entire Club family for Navratri celebrations at her house. She keeps the traditional Golu doll display. Almost all Rotarians, their Anns and Annets participated in this festivity. There was a fantastic satsang, yummy food, and spiritual fellowship. The satsang continued until 9:30 p.m. ably supported on the harmonium by Rtn. Srihari and on the dholak by Rtn. Narayan. Rotarians, Anns & even Annets sang lustily with great devotion to make it a grand success. It is now a yearly event to look forward to. Heart surgery Our community services committee did a wonderful job of taking up one heart surgery this month. This is the first instance for our club taking up this initiative in this Rotary Year. The patient was Mr. Earth. Umesh, referred to the club by Rtn. Amarnath. The surgery was conducted at Jayadeva Hospital in Bangalore. Special mention must be made of Continue to Commit! Let s wipe this menace of the face of the Past President Rtn. Srinath Promotion of e-waste project A new initiative, as part of saving our environment a related projects was started this month. It is being done in association with Bin Bag (a new social entrepreneurship). Rtn. Srinath babu has initiated this project in Ra- jarajeshwari Nagar. The initiative continues in terms of lending one s B a b u w h o h e l p e d in resolving an issue t h a t c a m e up during this referral and Rtn. I click photographs not to capture a memorable moment but to make a moment memorable. If I stumble upon a deserted beach with only the thunder of the tide in my ears and the last golden rays of sunset in my eyes and have the sea breeze rustle through my hair and scrunch the fine white sand under my toes I will order everyone to say CHEESE! 6 P A G E 6 Articles & Editor s Note M A T H R U S A N D E S H It is that day of the year.a birthday What excitement in deciding what to buy why not this? Why not that? What to eat why not this? Why not that? I realize that we die each moment Because time waits for no one The past is getting created With every passing second Can you capture that joy of giving and receiving That happens all through one s birth day? Pack it up in the prettiest wrapping And gaily adorn it with a satin bow? That would indeed be a befitting gift Except that it will have to be from you to yourself!! A Gift Are you Environment Conscious?? The delight, the joy, the happiness, the smile, the bliss These are all gifts that you have in you Unwrap them now, look at them, and hug yourself With a big THANK YOU!! A poem by Ann Chitralekha Narayan Dear Rotary family, It s my pleasure to have put the Oct edition of our Club newsletter together. I have been quite busy this month, moving to our new office location. Despite that, I found a little time here and there to get this all together. What I have observed these past few months are the various initiatives that the new Board has taken up to bring in new blood, new ideas, new perspectives, and new contributions to the betterment of our community. I am now convinced that our Club is strongly rooted and we have plenty of leaders who will take this Club forward in the years to come. I have noticed that in our club, there are Rotarians, old and new, who come forward and support initiatives from the front, while there are equally dedicated members who support the same initiatives from behind the scenes. I thank each one of you Rotarian, Ann, Annet for being there. In many instances, as a club grows and becomes a veteran club, I have found that there is always some amount of politics that dilutes fellowship. However, in our club, solidarity is utmost we never let each other down. The beauty is the participation of Anns and Annets to make all our meetings and events successful and memorable. We all bring joy, togetherness, and love to our Club. We are indeed a personification of Vasudaiva Kutumbakam. I pray to Goddess Rajarajeshwari to bless our Club so that it may continue to be this way in future. I hope you like this edition as much as I liked working on putting it all together. Yours in Rotary, Narayan Raghavan
