2 WELCOME Welcome to Nelson Livestock Company s 2012 bull sale Your interest and attendance is appreciated. It is a very good time to be in the beef business and we as producers continue to increase production per cow especially as production costs continue to rise. Our program has always promoted the use and value of heterosis. A good crossbreeding program lets you use this hybrid vigor to be more profitable and the planned crossbred calf crop you raise is better for this business because it combines the strengths of the parent breeds. We have been raising and selling Simmental seedstock for over 40 years and feel we have a strong offering of Simmental, SimAngus (red and black) and Angus bulls. The fall bulls were born into the tough winter of 2010/2011 (126 inches of snow recorded) and raised on their mothers and long hay. With all the adversity, their weaning weights were a little lighter than some years and then they were summer pastured on grass. The spring born bulls were weaned in October but did not get a 205 day weight until November. The bulls then were developed on CHS s H1-EN bull challenger, ground alfalfa, grass hay, and grass haylege. We develop these bulls in a 25 acre pasture to help insure they get plenty of exercise and are in the right condition to go to work. At Nelson Livestock Company, we are breeding on, not feeding on growth and performance. Thanks to Dr Terry Hall and Dr AJ Domek from the Wibaux Vet Clinic for help with the Nelson Livestock health program, Jay Temchack for the excellent clipping job and Jason McLennan for ultrasounding the bulls. This data will be on our website or you can call us and we can it to you. Semen Interest: Nelson Livestock Company reserves the right of 1/3 semen interest on any bull sold in the sale. The buyer will get % of the walking rights and salvage value and 2/3 of the semen rights. Health Program: Nelson Livestock Co uses a comprehensive vaccination and health monitoring program. 19 QUICK GUIDE to ASA and $ INDEXES Expected Progeny Differences (): are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using, the difference between two sires represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have of +10 and 5, a -unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields units). Key to using is knowing what units they are expressed in. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight, A would be expected to sire -pounds more weaning weight than B. If calving ease were the trait, A would be expected to sire -percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of heifers, we d expect A to require assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull s rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring + for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a+50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000).
