1 Volume XXVI Issue I January 2019 Presidents Thoughts Marcia Manzo & Leilani Benne We are very excited, a li le bit nervous (but undaunted) and privileged to be working with a wonderful new Board as PenWAG enters this brand new year! Thanks to the many hours of work put in by the previous Board and Commi ees, we will springboard into 2019 with the single most important goal of keeping PenWAG alive and vibrant. Already slated is the roll out of a new, up-to-date website, a new venue and format for our biennial runway show, an exci ng lineup of speakers and presenters, and a mee ng devoted to our philanthropic commitments. These endeavors are our raisons d etre and all require many hands to make it all happen. We are confident that those many hands and hearts will step up and make it all work. 4 February 9, 2019 Miriam Dym Lecture: Pa ern Play, Human Algorithms, and Block Prin ng Blocking prin ng, an ancient method for reproducing pa erns on cloth, is modular and addi ve. Coupled with transparent dyes that can be layered, block prin ng has the capacity for endless varia on even with repe on. Miriam Dym will share her insights into the fabulousness of block prin ng with a focus on algorithms, human feedback loops, and play as work. Roosevelt Room Q-80 Free for members; $5 guests at door Workshop: Block Print and Play With Pa erns! The workshop begins with a brief demonstra on and instruc ons on prin ng. Prin ng tools will be found objects and some official prin ng blocks. Class par cipants will create their own prints on cloth. Using dyes prepared to print, par cipants can layer colors and shapes. The goal is to find out where our pa erns take us, have fun, and see if making a mess gives good results. 5 9 March 2019 Jody Alexander Lecture: The Boro Aesthe c The Boro Aesthe c could be regarded as the many-genera ons-old rela ve of the current upcycling trend popular today. Jody Alexander introduces us to Japanese Boro tex les as well as looking at mending and reuse tradi ons around the world, contemporary ar sts working within the realm of the art of mending, and her current work inspired by mending and reuse tradi ons. Roosevelt Room Q-80 Free for members; $5 guests at door 10:00 AM Workshop: Boro Sampler Japanese mending techniques are used to repair and strengthen garments and tex le items. When le visible, the repairs are also decora ve. In this workshop, par cipants create a sampler of mending techniques seen in Japanese Boro tex les, and then will repair or embellish a garment or tex le of their choice. 6 April 13-14th Marie Yolande Lecture: Tex les and Needlework Interna onally recognized designer, author, and instructor Marie Yolande gives us an overview of couture, hand embroidery, and sewing from Western Europe. See ar sans accomplishing masterpieces in the same manner passed from one genera on to another. Peek inside their workrooms, glimpse at work displays, find out the historical background, and the future of needlework in Europe. A trunk show with a variety of items collected over the years will be displayed. Roosevelt Room Q-80 Free for members; $5 guests at door Saturday Workshop: The "Embroidery of France Ireland and Italy" Create a small needle book to learn the basic Bou s Provencal embroidery technique. Hand-s tch this small project while listening to the background of this French needle art da ng from the 14th century. While the appearance is similar to trapunto, Bou s pieces are not cut to achieve the raised effect, and it is completely reversible. Par cipants will learn to transfer and to design, s tch, cord, and stuff the marked design for added dimension. Machine s tching techniques will be demonstrated. Class size: 25 students $55 members, $70 guests Mul purpose Room C-35 1:30 to 5:00 PM 3.5 hour workshop, Kit Fee $15 Sunday Workshop: On the Edge Learn edge finishes that blend tradi onal French Couture techniques plus quick and innova ve ready-to-wear methods. Don t limit yourself to the trims available in stores. Learn how to create a Chanel type trim to blend with your fabrics, and how to make flawless piping and bias trims u lizing a simple technique used in Parisian Couture houses. These techniques can be incorporated into your costuming and wearable art. Be your own designer and go from ho-hum to va-va voom while crea ng your own personal edges. 7 Problems Accessing Workshop Supply Lists Several individuals have reported problems with the newsle er links to the workshop supply lists. The problems are due to the differences between web browsers. If you have difficulty accessing the supply list from the newsle er link, please go to and then select the link for "2018 Overview" under the "Mee ngs and Workshops" heading. This link takes you to the page that contains an overview of all of our 2018 speakers. Click on the blue tle line for the appropriate speaker, which takes you to the page with full lecture/workshop details for that person. At the end of the entry there s a blue text link to the supply list. Click that blue link to get the PDF version of the supply list. HOW TO REGISTER Registra on usually opens three months prior to the workshop for PenWAG members. Non-members can register for a workshop two months before the class. You can register online, at mee ngs, or by mail. To register online: Go to and sign into the Members only sec on using the password furnished in the most recent that accompanied the newsle er. Then scroll down under Members Online Workshop Enrollment to find the workshop you want. If the bu on under the workshop says Add to Cart, then there are spaces in the class, and you can enroll. If the bu on says Read More then the class is full but you can click on the workshop and add yourself to the wait list. To register for a class or workshop by mail: 1) Confirm there are openings in the workshop. You can do so in one of two ways: *Using the website: On the Members Only Pages of view the list of upcoming workshops. If the bu on under the workshop says Add to Cart, then there are spaces in the class. (While there, you can register yourself!) *Using Contact one of the Workshop Sign-Up Coordinators at workshops@penwag.org to see if there are spaces le in the workshop you want. Please provide the month of the workshop as well as the workshop tle. Please note that a response might take a day or two, Depending the coordinators schedules. 2) Send a check for the appropriate amount (see the workshop details) in accordance with the following:. *Write the workshop name, your address and phone # on the check in the reference line. *Make checks payable to PenWAG. *Mail registra on and check to: PenWAG, A n: Workshop Signups, P.O. Box , Campbell, CA ***EACH WORKSHOP MUST HAVE A SEPARATE CHECK *** WORKSHOP CANCELLATION PROCEDURE It is the a endee s responsibility to find a wait-listed replacement and to obtain payment from the person filling the spot. Wait-listed names may be obtained by contac ng the Workshop Sign-up Coordinators, at workshops@penwag.org. Replacements are to be contacted in the order of the wait-list. INTERNATIONAL TECHSTYLE ART BIENNIAL IV HALLWAY, PORCELLA, TURNER AND GILLILAND GALLERIES Launched in 2010, the San Jose Museum of Quilts & Tex les signature event, the Interna onal TECHstyle Art Biennial (ITAB) is returning for its fourth incarna on. ITAB is a juried exhibi on of work by ar sts merging fiber media with new informa on and communica on technologies in their ar s c processes, as a medium of ar s c expression, and/or in the content of their work. Leveraging its loca on in Silicon Valley, ITAB serves as the premiere pla orm for introducing the work of ar sts exploring the intersec on of fiber and technology to a global community. EVANESCENCE: JUDITH CONTENT FINLAYSON GALLERY Palo Alto based ar st Judith Content explores the essence of image, memory or a moment in me through the process of hand dyeing and s tched silk. Through discharge dyeing and shibori dyeing techniques, Content's work references the natural landscape with painterly movement and depth. (Marie notes that she has watched some of the pieces develop and highly recommends this exhibit). H2OH! TURNER AND GILLILAND GALLERIES Water - it's everywhere! The majority of the earth's surface is covered by water. More than half of the human body consists of water. Every living thing depends on water to survive, and life hangs in the balance when this precious resource is squandered. Offering a variety of ar s c interpreta ons, H2Oh! draws on a well of beauty, reverence, and contempla on as it invites viewers to consider the importance and the impact of water, one of the most vital, desired, powerful, sacred, and enjoyed resources on earth.. For more informa on MAKE IT WORK! The big unveil for the second 2018 challenge will take place at our January 12 th mee ng. You s ll have a couple of weeks to complete your project and inspire us with how you ve cleverly transformed something you can no longer wear into something that you will again enjoy wearing. Possible op ons include: crea vely altering a garment that has either shrunk or grown while hanging in your closet so that it once again fits; taking an almost forgo en wadder stashed away somewhere and solving whatever problem you were having; crea vely mending a beloved piece; completely transforming something you spent hours making, but didn t like, into something you love; or????? Your crea vity certainly isn t limited to any of these sugges ons! We re prepared to be amazed by your results! Page 9

12 The December 8, 2018 General Membership mee ng was held at the Campbell Community Center, Campbell, CA. There was a quorum present. Flo Creighton, President, called the mee ng to order at 11:05 AM. Marty Manzo moved that the General Mee ng minutes of November 2018, as they appeared in the December 2018 PenWAG newsle er, be approved. The mo on was seconded by Jackie Snell. The vote to approve was unanimous. Flo updated the membership on the status of several items: Announced that the 2018 Hall of Fame recipient is Emily Paz, nominated by Sherri Tafel. Thanked outgoing Board members Chris Lowell and Sue Keys. By Chris na Lowell Flo then introduced several Board and Commi ee members who had items of business for the members: Chris Lowell presented the slate for the 2019 Board of Directors. A er ascertaining that there was a vo ng quorum present, she asked for a show of hands for those in favor of elec ng the 2019 slate as the Board officers for The vote was unanimous. The 2019 officers are: President/Vice President - Leilani Benne / Marcia Manzo Secretary - Claire De Lucchi Treasurer - Wren Clark Membership - Anne Vogel Programs - Sherri Tafel Publicity - office open Member at Large - Minoo Amjadi Member at Large - Michelle Paganini Lenore Kelly will replace Linda Campbell in working with Emily Paz on the PenWAG Newsle er. Leilani Benne described the ongoing Challenge. The member reveal will be done at the January 2019 mee ng. Geneva Sanjideh described the bu on boxes that will be used for the 2019 ArtWEAR centerpieces. She requested that members donate bu ons for this project. Bu ons will be collected at the January mee ng. Sherri Tafel described upcoming speakers and workshops. Kevin Roche talked about changes to the PenWAG website. He reminded members that the website will be accessible only by unique user password as of January 1, Any member having trouble establishing a new password should contact Kevin at Webmaster@penwag.org Lona Ingraham reminded members that the commi ees for ArtWEAR 2019 are mee ng. The event will be held on May 18, 2019 at Mariani s. She is currently looking for sugges ons for a theme. As there was no further business to be brought before the membership, Leilani Benne moved to adjourn the General Mee ng, seconded by Carole Parker. There were no objec ons and the mee ng was adjourned at 12:00 AM. Following the business mee ng, members con nued to enjoy the Stash Sale, Potluck luncheon and the Auc on. Page 12
