7 NEWS 5 6 Bausch + Lomb Bausch + Lomb s Biotrue ONEday for Presbyopia range has been extended to cater for established and progressive presbyopes with a prescription ranging from +1.75D who are looking for a daily lens with maximum comfort. The lenses are made from Hypergel material, which according to the company stays wet, true to its shape and truly comfortable, delivering stable vision throughout the day for up to 16 hours. It has a 78 per cent water content and in trials, Bausch + Lomb found that just 1.5 per cent of that water content is lost in 16 hours of wear. Amy Rothwell, head of eye care marketing at Bausch + Lomb, said: We re thrilled to be able to expand our Biotrue ONEday for Presbyopia offering with the addition of the high add range. We can now provide both emerging and established presbyopes with a highly comfortable contact lens that provides stable vision throughout the day, both at work and during leisure time. 7 SeeAbility Charity call to sign petition New research from SeeAbility, the national sight loss and disability charity, shows that some 37 per cent of pupils attending special schools have no history of eye examinations. This and other statistics are contained in a new report, An equal right to sight, published by SeeAbility as part of its Children in Focus Campaign, which draws evidence from the charity s research project with Cardiff University s School of Optometry and Vision Science. We are strongly invested in this important agreement with Marchon, which aspires to further diversify and grow the Marni accessories business and to significantly consolidate our brand identity, said Gianni Castiglioni, CEO of the Marni Group. Claudio Gottardi, president and CEO of Marchon Eyewear, added: "We are really excited to embark on this collaboration with Marni, which will enable us to focus on empowering our licensing strategy with the European luxury brands and to produce collections that are 100 per cent designed and made in Italy, a driving force of our growth strategy. 9 Charmant Pinders winning LineArt window Charmant has unveiled the winners of its 2015 window competition, open to all customers who stocked eyewear from its brands, Charmant Titanium Perfection, Elle, Esprit and LineArt. The winners in each of the categories were: Black and Lizars in Milngavie, Scotland, for best Charmant Titanium Perfection window; NEG member Donovan Smith of Brighouse, West Yorkshire, for best Elle window; Reynolds Opticians, Penzanze, Cornwall, for best Esprit window; and Pinders Opticians, Mansfield, for best LineArt window. Each of the winners has received 100 worth of M&S vouchers. Louise Brunton, general manager of Charmant UK, said: We had a great response to the competition and our customers who took part really got on board. I was really pleased with the level of enthusiasm shown by everyone. The standard was so high that I am glad that it was left to a panel of independent judges to make the final decision. One of the most effective methods open to any practice is to create an eye-catching and appealing window display that changes on a regular basis. This really helps to create an interesting and colourful campaign and a point of difference in any location. 10 Essilor We are calling on the government to make sight tests available in every special school in England, said David Scott-Ralphs, SeeAbility chief executive. Children with profound disabilities may not be able to tell someone they have a sight problem, or get to a High Street optician. Let s bring much needed eyecare to them instead. The charity is urging people to sign a petition on its website, which it plans to hand to the Department of Health. 8 Marchon Eyewear Marni and Marchon have signed a new global licensing agreement that will see the development, production and distribution of the Marni Eyewear collections under the design and creative direction of Consuelo Castiglioni. The two companies will launch the new men s and women s lines in spring/summer 2016 with a full range of styles for both optical frames and sunglasses. Tom Freyne, director of Scope Ophthalmics, said: We are delighted to partner with Tearlab in the UK and Ireland. By adding a diagnostics dimension to the existing strong portfolio of dry eye disease and blepharitis products it ensures that the patient is receiving the right treatment for their condition. The TearLab Osmolarity System allows clinicians to measure the osmolarity of human tears, helping to diagnose and manage patients suspected of having DED. TearLab correlates best with patient symptoms and addresses many of the limitations we find with existing dry eye tests by providing quantitative, cutoff values that speed-up the diagnostic process, explained Arthur Cummings, chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Beacon Hospital, Dublin. Taking care of dry eye prior to cataract and refractive surgery provides better patient outcomes. TearLab can also be used to manage and monitor dry eye disease following cataract and refractive surgery and thereby facilitate the best possible post-operative care. 13 Menrad New designs from leading German brand What do chilli, beetroot and seasoning have to do with running a successful contact lens practice? They were all used by British Contact Lens Association (BCLA) president, Brian Tompkins, in his recent Presidential Address in London to illustrate the ingredients that, when blended together, can result in a successful contact lens business. During his highly energetic and multimedia lecture, Brian compared and contrasted running a restaurant to running a contact lens practice from the necessary tools and ingredients to the role Chef du jour, Brian Tompkins of the front of house team in helping to build the customer experience and the practice. Brian also emphasised how the chef (the business owner) needed to drive the business and ensure their team was educated, as well as act as a mentor to students who bring in new ideas and energy to the practice. Finally Brian looked at the bill and recommended being open and transparent about the fees and how they were structured, charging for professional services and keeping product competitive. He highlighted the need to be seen on social media and in the local media, and the importance of encouraging patients to join in the conversation. Ultimately, Brian asked the audience to recommend contact lenses, fit them and love them. 15 Shamir Tanya Storey is now head of sales and professional services at Shamir. A qualified dispensing optician, Tanya had been Shamir s product development manager for the past eight years. Tanya s comprehensive understanding of the ophthalmic industry is of great benefit to both our customers and our team of lens consultants, said Phil Bareham, Shamir general manager. Her passion for the industry and broad experience will continue to strengthen our position and levels of support that we can offer. Tanya added: I m very Tanya Storey proud to be part of such a highly skilled and motivated team. I very much look forward to leading the commercial contingent onwards and building Shamir s relationships within all sectors of our industry.

14 12 PRACTICE MATTERS Developing thoughts A call to action for INDEPENDENTS This month s guest Developing Thoughts is written by Peter Warren, chairman of the Association for Independent Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians (AIO) The frustrations within the independent sector with the direction of travel for optometrists and dispensing opticians are many and deeply felt. At the root of these frustrations is the fact that the nation s eye health is deteriorating rather than improving, and yet no-one in government who can address this situation seems interested. But this is counter-intuitive. Why would a government that is so focused on balancing the books accept a situation where members of the public are going blind unnecessarily at an annual average cost to the economy of 11,000 for each individual so afflicted? It does not make sense, so perhaps one of the reasons is that with the revolving door of ministers that we have seen in the last decade or so, they simply are not aware of this reality. If this is the case, the profession and its representative bodies must take at least part of the blame. It is, of course, the case that some of these bodies are constrained in what they can say and do by the range of interests that they represent, and perhaps this inhibits them getting the message across to government. The AIO is not constrained in this way. A complex picture Many in the profession may have noticed the increasing prominence of the AIO in giving voice to some of the most common concerns felt by independents. Indeed, one prominent editor within the profession commented recently that the AIO is the new voice of reason in optics following the reaction by the Association to the paltry increase in the GOS fee which was recently announced. The AIO council recognises that it has an increasingly important role to fulfil not just to represent the independent sector, but to make sure that those in authority and with influence fully understand what is happening to the nation s eye health. And it is not a single factor or even a few simple factors that are in play here. It is a very complex picture, and articulating what the key factors are, and how they combine to deliver the current serious situation, is not easy. Amongst the many factors are: So called free eye tests Ridiculously low GOS fees for sight tests The cross-subsidising of products to support below-cost eye examinations The resultant reluctance of people to visit opticians and optometrists because of the perceived high cost of optical products Lack of public awareness about the different levels of eyecare that are available Huge task ahead The AIO is now setting itself the task of bringing all these different factors together in one reasoned piece of analysis, which can be presented to government and other key stakeholders. The systemic work involved is a huge task and the Association needs all independents to get behind it. The first step is for the reader of this article to join up if you are not already an AIO member. As an AIO member, you will have the chance to participate in the work, and to help shape the output, that will be taken to government, other stakeholders and the media. The work is complicated by the fact that the government is unlikely to come forward with additional funding for optics, in particular being constrained by the way that NHS budgets now operate. This means that solutions need to be developed that acknowledge this reality and that can be presented to government with clear and deliverable solutions. The AIO will, of course, engage with all and any stakeholders that wish to be constructively involved in this work. In the meanwhile, the Association will continue to make its voice heard on individual issues in the professional media and increasingly on social media. The Association fully intends to live up to the mantra of being the new voice of reason in optics. Of more practical impact for independents will be the launch to the profession of the new independents Patients Quality Code at the AIO Conference in Nottingham on 11 October. The Code will commence the ground up process of educating and informing the general public of the range of eyecare that is available on the High Street and why comprehensive ocular examinations are so very important for long-term eye health and early detection of treatable conditions. If you are reading this article before the date of the conference then there is a still a chance for you to come along. To book a place or to join the AIO, simply lin@aiovision.org or call

27 BCLA BULLETIN 25 LEARNING AND NETWORKING AT Visionaries THE 2015 BRITISH CONTACT LENS ASSOCIATION (BCLA) VISIONARIES CONFERENCE WILL TAKE PLACE AT THE ROYAL COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS IN LONDON ON 9 NOVEMBER A packed house at the 2014 event This annual meeting provides the opportunity for education, networking and enjoyment and will offer up to 10 CET points. In keeping with the tradition of this annual event, formerly the Pioneers Conference, it will incorporate something for every interest from insights into research that may affect the future of the profession to more clinically focused discussions as well as looking at ways to grow an eyecare business. BCLA CEO, Cheryl Donnelly, told Vision Now: We are really excited about this year s event, the second Visionaries conference. The speakers will touch on key issues within our industry across a wide range of subjects. The first part of the day will focus on contact lens wearers and future wearers and aims to enhance delegates understanding of customer behaviours, their relationship with contact lenses and what can be done to influence these. Programme speaker, Professor James Wolffsohn Professor James Wolffsohn of Aston University, and BCLA academic chair, will kick off proceedings by asking the question: Do we really understand contact lens drops outs? Professor Wolffsohn will take a close look at the latest contact lens dropout data, enabling the audience to gain a greater understanding of what eyecare practitioners (ECPs) should be considering to maintain their happy contact lens wearers. In her talk, Patients and customers: why do they do what they do?, Neelam Patel will explore patient and customer motivation and shine a light on patient and customer behaviour in relation to contact lenses. Sarah Morgan, optometrist and staff development consultant, will build on these talks, providing tips and techniques on how to grow and retain a contact lens wearer base. The morning s talks will provide vital insights into how our customers are thinking and behaving, continued Cheryl. In addition, attendees will learn techniques that will enable them to identify opportunities to build their contact lens wearer base as well as intervening when contact lens wearers look like they are about to drop out. Supporting ECPs and wearers With ongoing concern about online sales of contact lenses, Alistair Bridge, director of strategy at the General Optical Council (GOC), will provide an insight into the GOC s consultation on the voluntary code of practice for online contact lens suppliers. The code is designed to improve the practice of online contact lens supply and encourage people who buy online to have regular aftercare appointments and eye examinations, with the overall aim to make it safer. The BCLA and its members are committed to supporting people who wear contact lenses, ensuring they do so in a safe manner, commented Cheryl. This code has the potential to ensure patients who do buy online can recognise reputable online sellers, who will help them do this. Later, John Davidson and Chris Steele will ask the question: Where would you rather be treated? and take a look at the different ways of managing keratoconus in the community and hospital settings from contact lenses to corneal cross-linking. Leading ophthalmic surgeon, Alex Shortt, ophthalmic bioengineer, Professor Rachel Williams, and associate dean of research and enterprise, Professor Barbara Pierscionek, will present some of the latest research supported by Fight for Sight, which will be followed by a panel discussion. This will include a look at research cross-linking intraocular lenses with myopia management. We re very much looking forward to hearing the results from the research supported by Fight for Sight that may impact our members future practice, said Cheryl. Prior to this year s evening Pioneers Lecture, Richard Pearson will pay tribute to eyecare visionary, Professor Brien Holden who passed away in July. The 2015 Pioneers Lecturer is Professor Phil Morgan, professor of optometry, director of Eurolens Research and programme director for optometry at the University of Manchester. His lecture is entitled, Future battlegrounds for contact lens success Pioneers Lecturer, Professor Phil Morgan Summing up the day, Cheryl said: The Visionaries Conference provides an ideal opportunity for our members to combine learning with networking and enjoyment. It also provides a great opportunity to top up your CET before the end of the current CET cycle on 31 December. The conference will be supported by an exhibition, where companies will demonstrate their latest products, offering live demonstrations. Delegates will be able to have oneto-one interaction with suppliers and talk to them directly about their products and services plus the opportunity to test their knowledge with a clinical review by way of a Visual Recognition and Identification and Clinical Signs quiz. Confirmed sponsors for the event are BCLA s 2015 partners, Alcon, CooperVision and Johnson & Johnson Vision Care. Topcon, David Thomas Contact Lenses/Menicon and UltraVision are Gold Sponsors. BCLA members may attend the Visionaries Conference free of charge; the cost is 200 for non-bcla members. More information and online booking is available at

After near total destruction during World War Two, the city has rebuilt itself to become the cultural centre of the Rhineland. Cologne is also the location for many beautiful optical shops, and one of the finest optical training schools in Europe. Augenweide Optik has been influential in Cologne for more than 20 years, and has seen many evolutions. Optician and co-owner Michael Franzen observes: People in Cologne are very design orientated, however, it must be a very refined design so no logos and the best quality. Our location is on a street known for European furniture, and our clients include professional men and women, who are teachers, lawyers and architects. We feature frames from LGR in Italy, Lindberg, Götti, l.a.eyeworks, with whom we have been associated since the store opened, plus Rolf and Theo among others. Etienne Federiks and Susanne Klemm in their Amsterdam Boutique The shop is a spacious 150m 2, and on the lower level is the examining room. Colours throughout the boutique are warm tones of cocoa and beige, further We did everything ourselves, says Etienne, and that includes all the electrical work and painting, and Susanne has done the interior design. The previous owner of the shop, which was a sport shop specialist with lots of fishing Minimalist interior at Suzy Glam items, really didn t do anything to the space for probably 40 years. It s been a lot of work, but we enjoy it. There is also a small garden at the rear of the shop, where customers can have a coffee, and relax while choosing a frame. The shop interior is minimal and streamlined a reflection of the finely crafted eyewear that Susanne creates. Wood floors and glossy white walls Gracious ambience at Augenweide in Cologne

29 STYLE SPOTLIGHT 27 a must-see destination not only for spectacle wearers but tourists too. The first time that a tour guide came by the shop I was shocked, says Johannes. The guide started talking about Rolf, what we do, and explained how everything is handmade in Austria, and all the materials are Austrian. It s interesting some people are totally fascinated, and others don t understand the energy. All natural materials are used in the boutique, including steamed oak, grey felt and slate, plus display trays for frames are in natural elements. The location is ideal in one of Vienna s oldest squares Franziskanerplatz with historic buildings on the square and Kleines Café where, over a coffee, the Rolf dream was realised. Benic Opticiens: St Malo Augenweide s examination room highlighted with wood panelling and cabinets. The windows are expansive, which sets the stage for beautiful frame displays. Michael frequently calls upon the artistic talents of a local Interior view and frame display at Augenweide designer to paint murals as part of the decoration. Rolf Spectacles: Vienna The Rolf team in front of their boutique in Vienna Optician and store manager Johannes Kern speculates that the Rolf Boutique may be the smallest shop in the world. However, it is certainly big on creative ideas and beautiful, handmade frames crafted from wood and stone. Rolf Spectacles is authentically Austrian: the Rolf brothers and two friends started the business in the Tyrol six years ago. They have won numerous awards for their exquisitely crafted designs. One of their dreams has always been to have a boutique in Vienna. It was by chance that it happened, recalls Johannes, because Bernie (one of the Rolf brothers) was sitting at Kleines Café and spotted the empty shop. He was attracted to the storefront because it is in wood and, of course, Rolf is all about wood. The Rolf team all agreed, and we opened last May. Since the late 19th century, Benic Opticiens in St Malo have been catering to the optical requirements of this historic city of Corsairs and pirates. Benic is a very old boutique, observes owner and optician, Guillaume Jourdes, and it was known for telescopes, barometers, and magnifying glasses. Fast forward to the 21st century, and Guillaume has transformed the premises into a comfortable, spacious boutique that reflects a much loved home. The location is excellent nestled on a cobblestone street that leads to the sea. Summer Exterior display at Benic in St Malo visitors flock to Saint-Malo, however, Guillaume says that this is no longer a hindrance for business. People come to St Malo year round, says Guillaume, and no doubt July and August are our busiest months, but there are so many events throughout the year now, and Christmas is busy so there is always something going on. Tourism is important, but we also have a local clientele who Benic Opticiens cosy, comfortable interior live here full time. Guillaume continues: Our brands include Theo, Andy Wolf, Mykita and Caroline Abram among others. It s interesting that when people are on holiday, they are more likely to browse and look for frames in a relaxed manner, and take the time to try on different designs they are open to new ideas. Master optician and shop manager, Johannes Kern, works on a frame at the Rolf Boutique In the few months that the shop has been open, Rolf is Interior display at Benic Opticiens
