1 Enterprising Newsletter Volume: 38 MARCH 2016 NETWORK FOR ENTERPRISING WOMEN THE PRESIDENT SPEAKS... CONVENER FOR MARCH March is Women's History month. I looked around and chose to write about the first woman to run for president of the United States. VICTO- RIA (CLAFLIN) WOOD- HULL was born in 1838 and her sister Tennessee was born in 1846 in Ohio. They were both noted for their beauty and eccentric behavior. As children, they traveled throughout Ohio with their parents, giving spiritualist demonstrations. At 15, Victoria married Dr. Canning Woodhull, but continued to tour as a clairvoyant with Tennessee. Victoria divorced Woodhull in 1864 and 2 years later probably married Col. James Blood (there is doubt as to the validity of the marriage). In 1870, Victoria and Tennessee, with financial support of Col. Blood, became proprietors of "Woodhull and Claflin's Weekly", a sensational journal that took stands in favor of woman suffrage, free love and socialism. In 1872, the Journal published the first English translation of "The Communist Manifesto". In the same year, Victoria became the first woman candidate for president, running on the People's party ticket with Frederick Douglass as her running mate. The two sisters moved to England in Victoria, having divorced Blood, married John Biddulph Martin, a wealthy banker. Tennessee married Francis Cook, an English art collector who became a baronet in Both women became well-known philanthropists. And that, as they say, is the rest of the story. 3 Volume: 38 Issue: 3 Page 3 3rd Annual Juried Art Show Enterprising member, Sarah Walker, President of Tarrant County Black Historical and Genealogical Society, Inc., recently sponsored the 3rd Annual Juried Art Show at the Lenora Rolla Heritage Center Museum at 1020 E. Humbolt St The showing was a huge success with Texas State Representatives and City Council members attending and a host of other interested individuals. The art is outstanding with realism, pointillism, and even carved wood features (see pictures). The exhibit and the museum are worth a visit, as well, as supporting our member, Sarah Walker. This was sent in the name of Stuart Clements, member, Judith Clements son, who passed away on February 4, Network for Enterprising Women is a group of professional women who share interests in women-related issues pertaining to organizational and entrepreneurial rolls in business, non-profits, and the arts. Membership is open to women who wish to share ideas, skills, and experiences in a non-judgmental, accepting environment. There is no exclusivity of any kind and all are welcome. The group functions as an informal information network and a source of support, at the same time, providing personal and professional growth opportunities. 5 WORDS FROM MEMBERS Memorable Fashion Expressions, But Are They You? Keiko Couch There were several memorable Fashion Expressions I recall that influenced and changed the fashion/ image world. Do you remember the blue satin dress created by Edith Head that Grace Kelly wore to the Oscar Awards ceremony? (This was a pretty long time ago.) The ice blue dress could not have been more gorgeous for the beautiful Grace Kelly. I was breathless when I saw it in a picture. I was a young student at a college in Texas when I saw an article on topless swimsuits created by Rudi Garnrich in the early 60 s, and what was shocking was that 3,000 of the topless swimsuits were sold instantly after it debuted!! I saw the movie Seven Year Itch starring Marilyn Monroe, which had the scene where she stood over the subway grating and the draft blew up her skirt. That was so daring! She was not skinny either! An In Style article said that thousands of copies were made and sold and eventually, the original dress was sold at an auction for $60,000. Of course none of us can forget the way Jacqueline Kennedy changed the American fashion image. Her simple & clean style, which reflected her upper class up-bringing, was fresh and so classic. She was elegant and polished. America finally had a princess. Did you know her famous 3-strand pearl necklace was a fake? You can buy it from a manufacturer for $ even now! Then came the skinny body called Twiggy with a mini skirt. Women tried to copy her hairstyle and makeup. The hair was cut short, bleached and puffed. The eyes were outlined with black eyeliners and fake eyelashes. The problem was that you had to have her child-like body. Then there was the creation by Versace worn by Jennifer Lopez called one of the 7 wonders of the fashion world. What kind of glue or tape was applied to keep the silk dress from completely slipping away from her body? A stream of Hollywood stars and the like who had tucked and lifted bought similar dresses to show off their curves. Fashion comes and goes, but your own style stays. The year 2017 marks my 35th year in business and I can honestly say I have helped thousands of women trying to find their true style, their image and the way they feel about themselves. To me, expressing yourself is a privilege and is of paramount importance as a human being. Are you ready to really express who you are?
