2 CELEBRATING COLORS From saffron-robed monks giving a jolt of color to the monochromatic grey temples to the explosion of fruits on season in the markets - even to the sudden burst of electric green in the arrival of monsoon, color (or colour if you re the queen) is an everyday affair in Cambodia. Through these everyday relationships between the natural palettes of nature and culture, Siem Reap s designers, artists and creatives alike find their inspiration; proving that color is never a seasonal thing in the kingdom. This guide was created to give everyone a window to the visions, craftsmanship, ideas and quirkiness fully embodying the new directions of Cambodia s renaissance. A center for contemporary art, the 1961 Gallery is a window to Cambodia and the region s modern art growth. Featuring the works of local and Cambodia-based artists, the space also exhibits works from international artists to provide and foster a platform for visual arts exchange and growth in Southeast Asia. The main gallery hosts new exhibitions every month as well as artist residencies while the retail pod adjacent to the space offers smaller works of art, posters, antiques, found objects, serigraphs, sculptures and other creative curiosities for sale. Works from recent exhibitions are also available from the archives for viewing and purchase. The store is on the first floor of a colonial-era building located in the Old Market area, in the center of Siem Reap. The New York Times Award-winning photographer John McDermott first came to Angkor in 1995 to witness a total eclipse of the sun. Inspired by the otherwordly light of the eclipse, he spent several years creating a definitive portrait of the temples and the living culture that surrounds them. John's images allow us to enter an Angkor that is rapidly vanishing: a hidden realm of temples lost in the forest. John opened the doors of McDermott Gallery at FCC Angkor in 2004, fulfilling his dream of a gallery dedicated to fine art photography. 11 Atelier Des Beaux Objets / Studio, Workshop, Shop Sirivan Chak Dumas left Cambodia in 1982 at the age of 12. After studying at the fashion design school Atelier Chardon- Savard in Paris, France, she acquired professional experience in fashion and home objects at the firm Facteur Céleste and trained in shoemaking techniques with master shoemaker Maurice Arnoult. She later opened her own workshop, which she operated for three years until she decided to invest in Cambodia and return to pass on her expertise and share her trade. For the last 6 years she has been creating strong and creative collections in a familiar Cambodian environment. 12 "A unique Siem Reap Atelier and Artist' Studio Theam is a Cambodian visual artist whose goal of honoring and restoring Cambodian culture in both traditional and innovative ways through paintings that focus on healing and creating love, integration and community after the Pol Pot era is ample evidence that his contribution to the restoration and development of Cambodian culture/lifestyle doesn't stop with his visual art.
