2 IN TOUCH WITH THE BEST At Arrow Uniforms, we have recently been addressed by some of New Zealand s top business leaders, and have benefited from their wisdom and experience. People like Geoff Ross of 42 Below, Moa Breweries and Trilogy; Paul Herrod, CEO of KPMG; and Dame Trelise Cooper called in to meet and mingle with the Arrow team. The guests all shared anecdotes and stories from their life experiences. It was great to have so many people of this calibre visiting us. Meeting these CEOs was made possible because, earlier this year, we participated in a novel form of fundraising by ChildFund in association with Trade Me. Paul Brown of ChildFund visited and told us of the plight of many of those in need. We felt privileged to be able to contribute to such a worthy cause. The auction resulted in a substantial donation to ChildFund, allowing Arrow to help 145 Sri Lankan families out of poverty with business loans, mentoring and training. As a result, our people were able to learn from the CEOs and hear these industry leaders impart their knowledge, plus answer a wide variety of questions. Our sincere thanks go to the CEOs we have met and those who are yet to visit in the New Year: Dame Trelise Cooper, Geoff Ross, Paul Herrod, Alastair De Raadt (formally Cadbury), Paul Fitzgerald (Coca-Cola), Jacqueline Ireland (Colmar Brunton), Christopher Luxton (Air NZ) and Roger Partridge (Bell Gully). OUTLOOK FOR 2015 Some up, some down, but all in all, our prices remain stable. Over the past few years, our relatively stable economic environment has enabled us to maintain prices at very steady levels. The price of cotton has traded in a downward trend, so it actually costs less than it did in However, despite this, the rising USD dollar means prices at Arrow will need to rise slightly to compensate. From 1 January, 2015, most prices will be affected by a slight adjustment amounting to an average of less than $ GST per garment. Across the board, we ve taken a fresh look at all our garments and some prices have actually been reduced. All in all, despite the adjustments, we expect prices to remain about the same right across our range. If you have any queries about prices, please don t hesitate to call our customer service team. 4 MEET SHEILA MURRAY-HAMILTON We re very proud to introduce Sheila Murray-Hamilton. There would be few people in the Wellington fashion scene who don t know or remember the iconic fashion stores of Hamilton and Murray, and Desire. When Sheila Murray-Hamilton owned those stores they shook the corporate scene, leaving rivals scrambling to keep up. Basically, if you were a woman in a corporate role, a politician, or someone who wanted to be subtly noticed in the hoi polloi of the Wellington scene you shopped with Sheila. Fast forward a few years and Sheila had moved on to the competitive world of corporate wardrobes. Using her flair and creativity, she brought catwalk knowledge and style to the offices and retail outlets of New Zealand. Style & creativity Now Sheila has joined Arrow Uniforms as Design Manager. She will be advising on range, styles, materials, latest looks and importantly creativity. Working with our sales teams, graphic artists and clients, Sheila will bring that special flair for design and image she is so famous for. We have been growing steadily over the years. Our client base in New Zealand and Australia is diverse, so we needed someone like Sheila to help us build the range. Having Sheila s experienced eye at the table is of enormous benefit, says Des Ford, Managing Director. Latest international knowledge Sheila said the last few weeks at Arrow have been fast-paced, exciting and positively challenging. She has already worked on some major projects and designs, and has more in the pipeline. Arrow knows the garment industry and are open to new ideas and ways of doing things. It s great to be able to make a suggestion and for that to be picked up, debated and implemented. Clients love that too. Our discussions are always vibrant, fun and out there. It makes for a terrifically creative work place, Sheila said. Sheila says that the corporate wear market is evolving fast. Gone are the days of ill-fitting, poorly designed uniforms. 5 MEET CLAIRE JOHNSTONE Claire Johnstone used to work for us, now she works with us. Claire Johnstone has joined Arrow Uniforms as General Manager Resources (Australasia). Her responsibilities will include human resources, managing the sales team and working on special projects. Already, she knows Arrow well, having spent the past year recruiting for us in the role of Manager of Corporate and Operations, OCG Consulting. When we approached her, she found it easy to say yes. I had been recruiting for Arrow and telling people what an amazing company it is and how bright their future is. So when asked, I jumped at the opportunity. I also knew the new staff and the management team. They are all people I would choose to work with. New ideas & a positive future Claire said Arrow is one of the few companies in the Wellington region that is growing. Importantly, it has strong leadership and a focus on a positive future. Claire has worked with similar private sector companies as a business advisor, lobbyist and consultant. She was the first female CEO of the Wellington Regional Chamber of Commerce, Chief Executive of the Whanganui Development Corporation, and General Manager for Industry New Zealand. Her background led her to working with innovative companies like Icebreaker, Sidhe Interactive and Park Road Post. Arrow has similarities to many of the more successful companies I have dealt with. Good management, an independent board, an eye on technology, an openness to new ideas, and a willingness to implement them. That s what makes them special and successful. Focus on business fundamentals Not many people would think about technology in corporate wear. But it is there and it is groovy. Claire s broad background in marketing, human resources and business development will add a further dimension to the Arrow team. 6 FREAK HAILSTORM: THE CATASTROPHE AND THE COMEBACK At 7pm, Wednesday 11 November, a freak hailstorm hit Lower Hutt and the Arrow Uniforms building. The hail storm was exceedingly heavy and of such volume that the guttering on our building could not cope. It clogged with hail and froze solid, causing subsequent rain to drip down into our building. Fortunately, one of our staff members was on site and called for help, averting a full scale disaster. An excellent NZ Fire Service crew and the local community rallied around and helped mop, sweep and clean up. We weren t anywhere near as badly affected as we may have been. They say that s what friends are for! Nevertheless, there was extensive damage. The insurance people arrived and everyone pitched in to help. Our disaster recovery plan was written for a time like this, and we were able to respond and execute as we had been trained to do. Extra temp staff were drafted in and we all sorted out where water damaged product was, and sorted the wet from the dry. Murphy s law! The building was affected in random places with wet carpet here, some ceiling tiles down there and a few drips in places you wouldn t normally expect. But it was all in good form mostly in rooms we had just repainted! Part of our risk management process is to store stock in multiple locations. The wisdom of this became evident when, although we had to condemn a few garments, we were able to maintain our equilibrium as we had surplus in our bulk store area. These photos show the moments of high drama that occurred but do not show the team effort that went into getting everything ship shape again. 7 BEHIND THE SCENES AT ARROW Recently at Arrow, we ve had a creative buzz in the air... The launch of a new Corporate Wardrobe Catalogue has had the whole Arrow team excited. Our Design, Marketing and Project teams are involved in bringing the catalogue alive. A lot goes into putting the fashion shoot together: photographer, garments, models, hair, make-up, venues, lighting etc. It all comes together to create the images you see in our new Corporate Wardrobe Catalogue. What you don t get to see is the fun that goes on behind the scenes when we re doing a project such as this. Our staff members are truly excited by what we ve created. We pulled together some of the behind the scenes images and hope we can share some of the camaraderie with you. The Hidden Difference The key thing with tailored garments is that it s partly the fabrics used what everyone e sees but almost more important is what goes on inside that makes the garments what they are. What matters is how the garment drapes when on, what happens when the garment comes under stress (taking it on and off), and what happens when it is cleaned. Enough about the technical stuff!
