Serge all side seams. Sew darts of front and back skirt. Zipper prep and application. // Stitch side seams together. Fuse interfacing in hem. Serge bottom edge and hem skirt. Sew yoke to bodice pieces, and stitch facing pieces and side seams. // Fuse interfacing to hem and serge. Complete hem. Sew hook and eye and complete dress. // Dress due at 12:00 PM. Draft pattern for jacket. Prep fabric for jacket, layout, cutting, and markings. Serge side seams and shoulder seams. // Sew at side seams and shoulder seams. Fuse interfacing, serge and hem sleeve. 3 Fashion Design & Fashion Merchandising Programs FSHD 1324 Ready-to-Wear Construction Course Location: HCC- Central, 3601 Fannin Street, Rm: 236 Course Semester Credit Hours: 2 Lecture/ 4 Lab/ 3 Credit Course Contact Hours: 96 Course Length: 16 weeks Type of Instruction: Traditional/ Classroom Course Information Course Description Prerequisites Course Learning Outcome SCANS (Secretary s Commission Addressing Necessary Skills) Textbook Information Lab Requirements Fundamentals of mass production of apparel, focusing on the operation of industrial sewing and pressing equipment; Survey of materials selection and construction techniques used at all price levels of mass produced apparel; Introduction to industry seam allowances; Identification of differences between ready-to-wear and couture construction. None 1. Select suitable materials for basic apparel designs. 2. Show beginning level fabric, pattern layout, and cutting skills. 3. Demonstrate basic stitching skills on industrial sewing machines and basic pressing skills and applying these techniques to basic garment construction. 4. Use standard industry seam allowances on all projects. 5. Plan, perform and evaluate an apparel construction project using factory assembly line techniques. 6. Write and evaluation of ready-to-wear construction from different price points. Critical Thinking/Reasoning: After the professor s presentation of suitable fabrics, the student will select an appropriate fabric for the assigned project. Organized/Maintain Information: The student will organize a notebook of samples of required seams finishes and use it for reference during the semester. Sewing for the Apparel Industry by Claire Schaeffer, Published by Prentice-Hall (Optional) As a student, you are required a total of 96 hours of class meeting during the semester. A total of 32 hours are for lecture/demonstration which will occur at the beginning of each new lesson plan. The remaining 64 hours are for lab which will be used for supervised work on class projects Student with Disabilities Academic Honesty HCC Policies Students with a documented disability (e.g. physical, learning, psychiatric, visual, hearing, etc.) who needs to arrange reasonable accommodations must contact the Disability Services Office at their respective college at the beginning of each semester. The faculty is authorized to provide only the accommodations requested by the Disability Support Services Office. Students are responsible for conducting themselves with honor and integrity in fulfilling course requirements. Penalties and/or disciplinary proceedings may be initiated by College Systems officials against a student accused of academic dishonesty. Academic dishonesty may include a grade of 0 or F on the particular assignment, failure in the course, and/or recommendations for probation or dismissal from the College System. A recommendation for suspension or expulsion will be referred to the College Dean of Students for disciplinary disposition. Attendance Policies 1. Students are expected to attend all classes (see college catalog for attendance policy). 2. Students are responsible for all work missed during their absence. 3. Student may be dropped from courses for absences that exceed 12.5% of the total semester hours, usually equated to more than 4 absences in a 2-day per week class and more than 2 absences in a 1 day per week class HCC Course Withdrawal Policy The State of Texas has begun to impose penalties on students who drop courses excessively. For example, if you repeat the same course more than twice, you have to pay extra tuition. Beginning in Fall 2007, the Texas Legislature passed a law limiting first time entering freshmen to no more than SIX(6) total courses withdrawals throughout their educational career in obtaining a certificate and/or degree.

4 EGLS 3 -- Evaluation for Greater Learning Student Survey System Title IX of Education Amendment At Houston Community College, professors believe that thoughtful student feedback is necessary to improve teaching and learning. During a designated time, you will be asked to answer a short online survey of research-based questions related to instruction. The anonymous results of the survey will be made available to your professors and division chairs for continual improvement of instruction. Look for the survey as part of the Houston Community College Student System online near the end of the term. HCC is committed to provide a learning and working environment that is free from discrimination on the basis of sex which includes all forms of sexual misconduct. Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 requires that when a complaint is filed, a prompt and thorough investigation is initiated. Complaints may be filed with the HCC Title IX Coordinator available at or at oie@hccs.edu. Discuss clothing items needed for class and resources. A. In this project, students will begin to acquire basic skills using commercial equipment. During this process, students will gain comprehension of fabric selection, pattern layout, construction, pressing and safety. B. Fabric selection: wool, wool blend, cotton, cotton blend, linen or linen blends (No rayon). If there are other fabric selections that the student would like to use and it is not listed, a sample must be brought in for approval. When in doubt, go with cotton denim. C. Must have a visible zipper and separate waistband D. Fabric preparation: pulling the thread, correcting the warp and weft E. Marking and cutting of skirt F. Construction of skirt demonstration G. Supervised construction of the skirt H. Submit skirt for evaluation N/A 15% Dress Project A. In this project, students will use their newly acquire sewing skills to construct a dress. Sewing techniques are similar to skirt project with some new techniques introduced. B. Fabric selection: wool, wool blend, cotton, cotton blend, linen or linen blends (No rayon). If there are other fabric selections that the student would like to use and it is not listed, a sample must be brought in for approval. C. No plaids, stripes, or large designs that require matching D. Fabric preparation: pulling the thread, correcting the warp and weft E. Marking and cutting of dress F. Construction of dress demonstration G. Supervised construction of the dress H. Submit dress for evaluation 20%

5 Jacket Project Techniques Book (SCANS) Fabric Selection (SCANS) Class Attendance & Participation A. In this project, students will construct a jacket. New techniques involved include: setting a collar, buttons, contour lines and etc. B. Fabric selection: wool, wool blend, cotton, cotton blend, linen or linen blends (No rayon). If there are other fabric selections that the student would like to use and it is not listed, a sample must be brought in for approval. C. No plaids, stripes, or large designs that require matching D. Fabric preparation: pulling the thread, correcting the warp and weft E. Marking and cutting of jacket F. Construction of jacket demonstration G. Supervised construction of the jacket H. Submit jacket for evaluation A. This project is a collection of techniques that will prepare students for advance classes. B. A sample will be created for each technique and will be organized in a binder to create a reference book for the student. C. All techniques acquired in this class are primarily machine sewn techniques. D. Techniques may include: Seams- Stayed, Taped, French, Mock French, Flat-Felled, Mock Flat-Felled, Self-Bound, Hong Kong; Hemming-Serged Edge, Clean Finish, Fused, Lace; Serging: Single Serge, Sew Serge; Bias- Piping, French Bias Binding, Spaghetti Tubing, Joining Bias, Bias Hem, Bias Tape; Fabric Belt Loops; Continuous Lap, and Lapped Zipper. A. Students will visit High Fashion Fabric on a select date set by the professor. During this visit, students will gain an idea of suitable fabric selection for projects; learn the difference of the various fabrics and more. A. Students must use the time in class to work on project. Failure to show up or not having necessary supplies will result in an F for the day. B. Fashion Design and Merchandising Department Attendance and Participation Policy for classes that meet ONCE a week. Absences Attendance & Participation Grade Over 3 0 *Three (3) tardies (up to 15 minutes late) = One (1) Absence. More than 15 minutes late will be recorded as an absence. 25% 10% Part of participation grade. 20% CREATIVE PROJECT/ FLASH N TRASH A. Student will create an original design using any material and any method of sewing. Student will choose a category he/she desire. 10%

Ready-To-Wear Construction Supplies Make-Up Policy Students are responsible for turning in all work that is assigned. Work that is turned in late will automatically have 20 points deduction for each class period that it is overdue. After 2 class periods, no late work will be accepted. Class Supplies List 1. Fabric shears- 7 or 8 with a bent handle 2. Paper scissors 3. A case of pearl head pins (comes in counts of 250, 400, or 500) 4. Pin cushion 5. Fiber-glass tape-measure with both in. & cm. measurements (non-plastic) 6. C-thru ruler- 18 with 1/8 grids (non-quilters) 7. Stiletto tracing wheel 8. Black, red and blue double tip sharpies 9. Tailor s chalk or Prisma Color pencil (white or yellow, red, & blue) 10. Assorted hand sewing needles 11. Thimble 12. Metal seam gauge Scotch magic tape 14. Small seam ripper 15. Mechanical pencil with eraser (0.7mm or 0.5mm preferred) 16. Eraser (no pink erasers) 17. French curve (may be purchased or made in class) 18. Notcher 19. Weights, purchase or make your own! Cardstock paper 4. ¼ yd of solid color cotton or muslin fabric 5. 1 yd of printed pattern cotton fabric Other Student Information Fashion Boot Camp Fashion Boot Camp is held at the beginning of each fall and spring semester for all fashion students to alert them to the student opportunities for the upcoming semester. If you are not able to attend and would like to receive these valuable opportunities, please contact the fashion office located at HCC-Central campus by calling WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 28, 6PM. LOCATION: TBA Student Competitions HCC fashion students are highly successful in student competitions at the local, state, national and international levels, frequently winning best-of-show, and cash/scholarship Fashion Resource Center awards. The resource center is located throughout the 2 nd Floor of the Fannin Building. It houses the Historical Fashion Collection, fashion books, videotapes and designer press releases. The Historical Fashion Collection is a collection of international designer, ethnic and vintage clothing dating from the 1900 s to the present. Class Rules A. General Rules 1. Sign-in each class. Late students need to put the time in which they are arriving. 2. No food or drinks in the classroom. Students are only allowed a close cap water bottle. There will be a minutes break in between. 3. Return all supplies to their respective places. 4. Table room is limited, only necessary supplies for class maybe on table. Please be respectful to other students. 5. Each student is in charge of their sewing area. Clean assigned area including cutting table and machine. Points will be deducted from class participation grade if the sewing area is not maintained. 6. Select and use the same machine for each class. Again, students are required to maintain their space. If something is wrong with the sewing machine, report it to the instructor immediately, so that the student is not held responsible. 7. Do not leave bobbin and bobbin case. Students are responsible for keeping up with them. 8. Label all supplies. 9. Only the student enrolled in the current ongoing class may be allowed in the classroom. This means no children, parents, spouse and etc. 10. No talking on cell phone during class hours. They must be turned off or put on silence. 10 points will be deducted from FINAL grade if it goes off during class. If there is an emergency, please make prior arrangements with the instructor before class begins. B. Safety Rules 1. Keep eyes on what you are working on at all times when sewing. Not only does prevent mistakes on projects, it keeps you from sewing your fingers. 2. If you need to adjust anything within the needle area, take your foot off the pedal and place it on the floor. 3. Turn off your sewing machines completely when you are changing needles or

8 presser foots. 4. Practice keeping your fingers as far as possible from the moving needle. If you must get closer to the needle, the slower you will run the machine. 5. When sewing, keep fabric out in front of the machine and to the side of the presser foot. 6. Keep scissors close and near the middle of the table when not in use. 7. Always place the iron on the silicone plate, face-down when not in use. Do not leave it anywhere else on the ironing board or it with burn.
