A man is alone on an island with no food or water, yet he does not fear for his life. Why?
LAST WEEK AS RECALLED BY PATRICK MAHONY 4 This week s attendees were greeted by PP Kalma McLellan, who bore the grim news that the Rotary Club of Ryde would be forcibly participating in Dry July: there was no alcohol available due to licensing issues with the venue. President Julie Thorp opened the meeting, and PDG John Dodd proposed the toast to the club, and to Rotary International. The guests were introduced: speaker Christine Squires from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Grace Moyo, Jade Catherall from the Rotary Club of Roseville Chase, plus another visiting Rotarian, Charles Kilby, formerly of the Ryde Club, now Secretary of the Rotary Club of Burleigh Heads. There were a few birthdays to celebrate: PP Bill Payne (turning 88), PP Steve Thorp (turning 66), as well as the partners of Val Payne and current President Julie. The Halletts were also celebrating their 39th Wedding Anniversary. Steve gave the club s first Five Minute Vocational Talk. This will be a regular part of future meetings, giving Rotarians the opportunity to update the club about what is happening within their vocation. Steve picked up from his last vocational talk in He was CFO for IPMG until 2007, and then worked as a contractor for STI, learning a great deal about how not to do business from the Germans. He s been slowly inching towards retirement, and now claims to be 90% retired. Whether or not he will ever fully retire remains to be seen. Only PP Adrian Hallett had a report: the club has been invited to the City of Ryde Prayer Breakfast on 5 August. Tickets are $30 if you re interested, talk to Adrian. He also reminded us of the upcoming 5th Sunday, meaning Meals on Wheels is happening: thanks to PP Bob Carroll, Dennise Herrick and Ayesha Jadhwani for volunteering to help out.
LAST WEEK AS RECALLED BY PATRICK MAHONY 5 Next came the Serjeant-at-Arms session. PP Geoff Brennan won the spackle, and was subsequently fined for his good fortune. Everyone was fined for too much fellowship, while Charles was fined for trying to obtain a beer during this Prohibitionist Era. In fact, Charles found himself on the receiving end of numerous fines, even copping fines for those in absentia it s almost as if the club missed having him around! Hendo was fined for abusing the Serjeant to which the guilty party replied I m just getting started. After that fiery fines session, it was time for our guest speaker. What do the ancient Romans, the Inca, surnames and rubella have in common? Christine Squires from the ABS explained the connection: the Census. The process of counting all citizens and property has a 6000 year old history, and Australia s 17th census is happening on Tuesday 9 August Christine covered the importance of doing the census, the logistical challenges involved with counting 24 million people in one night, and some of the outcomes of census data. The census will provide a snapshot of Australia and produce valuable data for planning, development, and allocation of resources. Christine also patiently and adeptly answered the many questions her fascinating talk raised, including a particularly detailed interrogation by Kathryn Dodd. Everyone in the room learned something from this excellent talk, so make sure you re ready to go for census night in a few weeks time. Ayesha led the Vote of Thanks, and as usual, the meeting closed with the national anthem.
JULES JEMS 6 Fellows we had a dry meeting but very informative. We all learnt a little bit more than we knew before about the census especially Kathryn who would have kept asking questions if we hadn't run out of time. She had more questions than were on the official ABS form. I have been informed by Next Gen that their liquor licence is on hold for a few more weeks but they will be providing soft drinks to us free of charge. It really has turned into Dry July. This week we have the DG Bruce and his wife Bette attending, this is not his official visit that will be October 8th when we will have a zone meeting. HANDS AND LEGS FOR EDWIN In September 2015 Rotarian Edwin Ikwu and his wife Benedicta came to the House of Welcome, an Asylum Seeker and Refugee Support Centre in Carramar south western Sydney. He was in a wheelchair because he had undergone amputation of both legs and all his fingers as well as the loss of most of his ears and nose the previous year. He had come into the Refugee Centre to see if he could volunteer to help other refugees. To date, crowd funding has raised over $30000 towards the target of $95000 which will see Edwin receive prosthetic hands to assist with daily life. We as his fellow Rotarians hope to support his cause. SERJEANT S FINE OF THE WEEK Double Whammy Past Member Charles Killer Kilby & current member Stefan Sojka are awarded this one. Killer proceeded to ask members if they would like a beer or wine, he approached the bar waiting for the barman to appear & before he could ask. Stefan spoils the fun by telling Killer that we could not purchase or consume alcohol from the Bar. Tip of the week: Enjoy your fellowship, the Serjeant likes it when you do. Editor s Note: It is interesting that 2 of the 3 fines of the week have involved alcohol. WHEN YOU HAVE A MAKEUP Please remember to drop an to both Grahame Metcalfe and President Julie Thorp to make sure it is recorded. If you are visiting another Rotary Club and would like to submit a photo and a few words to The Hub, please editor@ryderotary.org.au

ROTARY CLUB OF RYDE THE ROTARY VISION Rotary is a worldwide organisation of more than 1.2 million business, professional, and community leaders. Members of Rotary Clubs, knows as Rotarians, provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. There are over 34,000 Rotary clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas. Clubs are non-political, non-religious, and open to all cultures, races, and creeds. As signified by the motto Service above Self, Rotary s main objective is service - in the community, in the workplace, and throughout the world. THE FOUR-WAY TEST of the things we think, say or do 1. Is it the Truth? 2. Is it fair to all concerned? 3. Will it build goodwill & better friendships? 4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned? ADVANCE AUSTRALIA FAIR Australians all let us rejoice, for we are young and free; We ve golden soil and wealth for toil; Our home is girt by sea; Our land abounds in nature s gifts, of beauty rich and rare; In history s page, let every stage, Advance Australia Fair. In joyful strains then let us sing, Advance Australia Fair!
