1 September 2015 September Meeting Tuesday, September 8, 2015 Normandy Park Cove 12 Noon Brown Bag Lunch 12:30 pm Meeting Begins Group Health Exhibit Jul/Aug Jacqueline Carroll Sept/Oct Guenter Winkelmann Normandy Park Senior Living Center Sept/Oct Anita Corby, Marta Creswell, Judy Eckhardt, Nancy Fulton, Sharon McConnell Burien Arts Gallery September Shannon Folino & Liz Simpson Reception: Friday, Sept 4, 5 8 PM President s Message I am pleased we are starting our club meetings next month and I will do my best on the board as president. My primary hope is that we have a fun and productive year ahead, and continue our great alliance with the Burien Arts Gallery. We won't have a demonstration at the September meeting, because there is so much to discuss regarding the planning of the Cove show on Sept 26-27th. Some programs for the coming year have been secured, but there are still openings. If you have any suggestions please contact me, thank you. See you at the September 8th meeting! Nancy Fulton Artwork of the Month August Chris Gonvers, Photography Membership Note Harry Langen Our new year begins with the September meeting. In order to conduct club (AU) official business, membership must be paid in September: $35.00 for the year. Members in good standing (paid) are able to participate in club activities, vote on club business, and exhibit in AU venues. Paid members receive a newsletter monthly, a membership roster, and are eligible to show in AU art shows.* AU paid memberships support the operations costs of club business and material requirements. All members will be asked to complete (or renew) the member application form, and submit an artist bio/ statement to be used at art shows. *The Burien Arts Gallery (BAG) is a separate organization, and AU requirements to exhibit there include annual paid memberships to both organizations. Meeting Notes, June 2015 by Tom Fletcher Mac McQuade from the Normandy Park Senior Living Center presented an ongoing venue opportunity for Artists United. All AU members voted to add this locations as one of our venues. Artists are encouraged to show larger works, as the space is large. Artist shows will change every 2 months, and there will be receptions for both months, which artists are expected to attend. Tom Fletcher and and Mac McQuade (who works at the senior living center) will be chairpersons for this new venue. Artists for the opening months of July/August are: Shannan Folino, Lou Huff, Tracey LeMoine, and Debra Valpey. The Burien Community Center Show will have its opening reception on August 6th. The artwork will be up through October 30th. The Autumn Art Fair is at the Cove, Sat & Sun, September [See newsletter Addendum for details.] New officers were elected: Nancy Fulton, president; Lorain Stowe, vice-president; Tom Fletcher, secretary; Sharon McConnell, treasurer. There are several committee positions that are still open. Please consider volunteering. Chris Gonvers won Artwork of the Month for August.

2 Community Show September 2015 Burien Community Center Aug 3 Oct 30, 2015 The opening reception for the show at the Burien Community Center was held on Thursday, August 6th. Although attendance was light, the artists attending shared a pleasant evening together. Don Zimmerman took photos of many artworks. Here are several, with apologies to all artists whose work is not pictured here. 3 September 2015 Programs by Nancy Fulton September: No program. Extra time planned for extended discussion of Cove Fall Art Show, completion of plans, assignments, and artist signups. October: Susan P Haas has been an art appraiser in Seattle for nearly 25 years. She has a BA in Art History from the University of Michigan, and an MA in Art History from the University of Washington. Susan will present a program on fine art appraisal and conservation. Member News Shannan Folino won first place for watercolor in the Tukwila Art Show. The painting (Image at right: Shannan Folino, Three Koi) was also juried into the Renton Annual Art Show, and sold at that show. Nancy Fulton and Nancy Bogni will both be in a Women Painters of Washington show called Painting Poetry, at the WPW gallery in the Columbia Tower, in Seattle. Nancy Fulton will also be showing at the River Gallery in La Conner, September and October. Nancy Bogni won first place for oils at the Tukwila Art Show, and also won third place in the Allied Arts of Renton show, and sold that painting. Debra Valpey sold five paintings at the Normandy Park Senior Living Center. She was one of the artists for July and August, in the opening show at this new Artists United venue. The Harbour at St Jean, Cap Ferrat, Winston Churchill Armed with a paint-box, one cannot be bored, one cannot be left at a loose end, one cannot have several days on one's hands.' W. Churchill Although he is best known for his service as prime minister of Great Britain during World War II, Winston Churchill was also a painter. Churchill discovered painting at age 41, and he produced many works of art over his lifetime. According to his daughter, Mary Soames, painting literally grabbed him, thereafter playing an increasing and abiding role in his life, renewing the source of his great inner strength and enabling him to face storms, ride out depressions and rise above the tough passages in his political life. His paintings show Churchill to be a good amateur painter, and include sun-dappled landscapes, pretty gardens, and intimate family scenes. [ Summarized from The Guardian, 3/10/2015.] 3

4 September Officers and Chairpersons Club Founded in 1949, our aims are to encourage individual artistic development, and to bring art into the community. Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month, Normandy Park Cove. 5 Addendum Annual Art Fair at the Cove The show is the weekend of September 26-27, Saturday 10-6, Sunday The coordinator of the show is Tom Fletcher. Please contact him to volunteer, or for questions. Our annual fair (usually in November) is in September this year. The show is fairly well known in the community, but we are in need of more/better publicity. Please consider volunteering and showing your art. Most important is getting the word out to the public. The BAG has postcards you may take and distribute, Tom Fletcher has extras, and there will be extras at the September 8th meeting. has cashiers for this show, so you do not handle your own sales. AU takes 10% commission, so price your art accordingly. If a customer uses a credit card, there will also be a 5% charge to your commission. All show materials including tables and chairs, grids and grid hooks are provided. You must provide your own professional looking table covering, preferably a solid color. Please advise if you will bring your own lighting so we can place you near an outlet. AU is again planning to have paid help to help set up our grids, and we set up between 8-10am on Saturday morning. There s a possibility that we will be able to set up on Friday evening, but that only happens if there is no other Cove event scheduled. We have the following people signed up to help make the show a success. Some volunteers are still needed. PROMOTION: Design and create postcards and posters/flyers: Liz Simpson Put up street signs: Anita Corby, Tom Fletcher list: Tom Fletcher Promo to local businesses with flyers and postcards Burien - 152nd & 153rd Sts Other locations around Burien DEMOS (artist in action): Harry Langen, Nancy Bogni, Chris Gonvers (live music violin) Normandy Park, some West Seattle - Tracy Lemoine Des Moines - Main street GREETERS and CAFE: We need greeters and people to bring pastries for sale. These are the easiest 2 places to volunteer. If you are not able to participate much, maybe you can just hang out with us near the cashier's table and greet customers as they walk in. The cashiers table will now be in the front by the windows, so the greeters can be next to them (along with the guest book and photograph/history books). Please consider bringing something for the pastry/snack table. Last year we made about $80 in snacks revenue. There will be a donations box for everyone to pay for their snacks. CASHIERS: Many of you have volunteered, but there are a few more spots open, most notably 4-6 on Saturday, and on Sunday. Sharon McConnell and Tom Fletcher will help coordinate this, but there must be at least 2 people for each 2 hour period, and both Sharon and Tom have booths. Please consider helping at the cashiers table. RAFFLE TABLE: We need a volunteer to lead this. Each person participating in the show will donate one piece of art, and raffle tickets are sold. Purchased raffle tickets are placed in the corresponding bags of the artwork of choice. On Sunday at 3:30pm, winners are drawn no need to be present to win. All participants are expected to help sell raffle tickets. We are also considering a silent art auction, with 4 or 5 pieces of art, and a 50/50 split on the final bid price. BOOTHS $50: Shannan Folino, Tom Fletcher, Anita Corby (2), Judy Lane (2), Sharon McConnell, Nancy Fulton. If we have new members at the September meeting, they will need to pay AU dues in order to participate, and also volunteer at the show. We have room for 4-5 more booths. Consider sharing a booth, which makes the price just $25 each. GRID SPACE, etc $25: For space on the AU general grids, or if you would like to display matted pieces, or if you have cards to sell, the overall fee is $25. Based on current signups, there is a great deal of space available. If you choose to use AU grid space, please be considerate of other members, and don't hang all of your art in the prime spots. If you bring 8 pieces of various sizes, bring a few more and hang them after everyone else is done hanging. We do not want empty grid spaces. For small and miniature artworks, we will have a table next to the cashiers table. If your name is not on the "GRID" or "BOOTH" space list, then you are not able to hang. We need to be able to plan the layout based on how many people sign up. Current signups are: Chris Gonvers, Tracy LeMoine, Harry Langen, Diane Gardner, Carole Shankland, Nancy Bogni, Nadine Howard, Al Matsumoto. You can still sign up at the September meeting, or better yet, Tom Fletcher: tommy2tomas@comcast.net
