One GOBBLE! GOBBLE!! We are all feeling thankful for the mild November weather we ve been having. It was sunny and cool for the big Thanksgiving Feast over at Easter Seals Main Center. Among other exciting activities, we participated in contests to create the best Scarecrow and the Tastiest Pie. Our art group made a wacky scarecrow in the shape of a giant turkey. We used a plastic pumpkin for the head, a tiny corncob for the beak, and little red gloves for the comb and wattle. We made the feet out of small garden rakes that we painted orange. We stuffed it with raffia, cornhusks, mop heads, and strips of fabric. Meanwhile, Elizabeth was a busy little baker. She made a scrumptious Pecan Pie at home and submitted it for our tasting pleasure. It was delicious! Before lunch, we all enjoyed a variety games, crafts, and movies. The big feast was amazing! When we were all done stuffing our faces we danced off some calories at our wild dance party! In preparation for the big festivities, our sewing class had made several lovely articles for sale at the craft table. They will also be available at the HTR Holiday Shoppe.
ART & SCIENCE: CAT ART FRAME In case you couldn t tell from our previous newsletters, we love cats! Our afternoon art class has been hard at work creating some amazing artistic collages featuring our favorite furry feline friends. We used a variety of interesting fabrics and other materials such as feathers and string. Meanwhile, our science class was learning about measurements and angles. We got some surplus molding, used a miter box to cut perfect forty-five degree angles, and assembled a frame, which we then painted a lovely golden color to complement the cat! Two
Three BIRD MIGRATION We paid our annual fall visit to the Consumnes River Preserve down in Galt. We were there at the perfect time of year to view the large gathering of endangered Sandhill Cranes. The main visitor s center was temporarily closed for remodeling work, but we were still able to have access to the accessible trails along the marsh. Ken remembered to bring a nice pair of binoculars to share, so we got some close-up views of interesting avian visitors, including both Greater and Lesser Sandhill Cranes, Egrets, Ducks, Herons, Ospreys, Canadian Geese, White-Tailed Kites, and even threatened Swainson s Hawks! FESTIVE HEADGEAR We went on an expedition looking for hard-to-find holiday supplies at Party City. We re working on a top-secret project for December and found one of the items we needed. While we were shopping, we decided to try on some very silly hats. That Chuck can be such a Turkey sometimes! ART SUPPLY SHOPPING Lizzy, Dante, Roseline, Chuck, and Nicky all helped pick out some new materials for our afternoon classes.
Four FANTASTIC PHOTOGRAPHY We paid another educational visit to one of our favorite galleries: the Sacramento Fine Arts Center. This month, they had a special juried photography show called Visions. The photos were judged according to several different categories, including Nature, Man Made, People, and Creative/Abstract/Other. The whole show was wonderfully evocative, but we each had our personal favorites. David B. was fascinated by a gorgeous landscape. Tasi and Duncan were enamored of a rainbow over the Tower Bridge. Linda was more into colorful abstracts, while Chuck and David C. both preferred a serene, calming seashore scene. SHE WON AGAIN! Stephanie from ACE-IT I was once again the big winner in the Smarty Pants Quiz from the October Newsletter. Here she is, fanning her big stack of Washingtons. Someone else really needs to take her down this month. Come on people. Let s step it up a notch! Niki s QUIZ Put on your thinking cap and your smarty pants and win a $10 gift certificate! It is made up of reds, oranges, yellows, greens, blues, indigo and violet It needs sunshine and rain to exist It lives in the sky Be the first to call ACE IT I at and let us know what the word is and where it is in the newsletter and you will fatten your wallet with a $10 gift certificate!
Five ATTENDANCE NEWS ACE-IT I COOKING ACADEMY Independence With a Spicy Twist! EVERY DAY COUNTS! Vocabulary Word: Evocative Evoking or tending to evoke an especially emotional response HEALTHY LASAGNA Somehow, we ended up in an Italian mood, so we decided to make this old traditional favorite. For a nutritious twist, we used lean ground turkey in honor of Thanksgiving. We added bell peppers and onions simmered in a marinara sauce. While the mixture was cooking, we prepared our flat noodles and grated our mozzarella cheese. We also used fresh ricotta and some cottage cheese. Mangia bene! NEWS FROM CITRUS HEIGHTS ~with Foreign Correspondent Ken U. Ken reported on a power outage at his church on Sunday. They had to hold services in the dark with candles until power came back on at 11:00am. In other electrical news, Ken related the story of a power line in his area that fell on some houses, causing a fire. There was a minor traffic accident involving one of several responding fire trucks. On a happy note, Ken spread the news that he had a great time at the Senior Gleaners Luncheon. It was held at the Cricket Restaurant, where Ken had three large, yummy Buckwheat Pancakes! Lastly, Ken told us that he was shopping at Grocery Outlet on Auburn Boulevard one day when a very nice Sheriff s Deputy bought him a can of soda. KNITTING PROJECT: DON S.
