1 GREATER LONDON 3/567 (E.01.K099) TQ BERMONDSEY STREET AND GIFCO BUILDING AND CAR PARK Assessment of an Archaeological Excavation at Bermondsey Street and GIFCO Building and Car Park, London Borough of Keith-Lucas, F Brockley : Pre-Construct Archaeology Ltd, 2003, 85pp, figs, tabs, refs An evaluation trench was initially extended for excavation, but on the discovery of 16th century timber structures was extended further. Natural alluvial deposits, peat and the silting of ditch ditch were by by a later medieval ditch. A 16th century revetment of timber boards and wattle retained a baulk of material left after clearing part of the ditch. Bridges across the cleared parts of the ditch were found. Early 17th century dumped layers, a series of pits, post holes, and a probable tanning pit were found below a late 17th century brick and timber drains. Roman artefacts were recovered from the silting in Test Pit 6 and was truncated by late post-medieval disturbance, including a basement. [Au(adp)] SMR primary record number: 28/147, RO 3/569 (E.01.K075) TQ BERMONDSEY STREET, SOUTHWARK An Assessment of an Archaeological Excavation at 171 Bermondsey Street and an Archaeological Watching Brief, London Borough of, London SE1 Darton, L Brockley : Pre-Construct Archaeology Ltd, 2002, 47pp, figs, tabs, refs The work comprised a single trench which contained a thick Bronze Age peat layer. The medieval period brought two phases of north-south ditches containing well preserved material and finds, including five turned wooden bowls and seventeen leather shoes. These ditches may relate to Bermondsey Abbey. Early post-medieval dump layers sealed the ditch and were cut by two phases of well. The earlier well was lined with two wooden barrels truncated by an 19th century brick lined well. An 18th century floor and wall were recorded.[au(adp)] SMR primary record number: 28/143 1
2 3/570 (E.01.K074) TQ BERMONDSEY STREET An Archaeological Watching Brief at 173 Bermondsey Street, London Borough of, SE1 Taylor, J Brockley : Pre-Construct Archaeology Ltd, 2002, 13pp, figs, refs An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during ground reduction works in the basement of 173 Bermondsey Street. No natural deposits were observed on the site. Fairly homogenous, probable medieval dumps, were identified across the area watched. These were truncated by chalk and mortar foundations, associated with a late medieval/early post-medieval structure. [Au(abr)] SMR primary record number: 28/144 Archaeological periods represented: MD 3/571 (E.01.K098) TQ AMERICA STREET 2 America Street, London Borough of SE1, Post-Excavation Assessment of an Archaeological Excavation Dawkes, G & Melikian, M Twickenham : AOC Archaeology Group, 2002, 138pp, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: AOC Archaeology Group The excavation revealed prehistoric finds, a semi-circle of stake holes, Iron Age pits and 165 Roman burials and finds; with the earlier burials in organised rows. Included were a possible family burial, a horse burial and an inhumation with a spear point lodge in a bone. The Roman cemetery was cut by medieval ditches and post-medieval brick wells and a sump. London Borough of Daykin, A & Bull, R London : Museum of London Archaeology Service, 2003, 49pp, figs, tabs, refs A medieval chalk wall with external hearth was observed along with post-medieval deposits, basements and walls. In Druid street, human bone was found in post-medieval deposits. Late 18th/early 19th century brick walls were also observed though they remains too fragmentary to infer 2
3 building plans or locations. A brick soakaway dating to the 18th/early 19th century was recorded in the north-east of the site. [Au(abr)] 3/574 (E.01.K008) TQ DEVERELL STREET, SOUTHWARK An Archaeological Watching Brief at Former Duchess of Kent Public House, 67 Deverell Street, London, SE1, London Borough of Palmer, D Twickenham : AOC Archaeology Group, 2002, 9pp, figs, tabs Work undertaken by: AOC Archaeology Group An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by AOC Archaeology Group during groundwork being carried out as part of the development of the former Duchess of Kent Public House, 67 Deverell Street in the London Borough of. The watching brief revealed that half of the site had already been basemented to the level of natural gravel, whilst the other half consisted of post medieval made ground overlying buried subsoil which in turn overlay natural ground. No archaeological features were recorded on the site. [Au] 3/575 (E.01.K100) TQ BERMONDSEY WALL WEST & CHAMBERS STREET Assessment of an Archaeological Excavation at Bermondsey Wall West & Chambers Street, London Borough of, SE16 Taylor, J Brockley : Pre-Construct Archaeology Ltd, 2003, 116pp, colour pls, figs, tabs, refs The main excavation was effectively and extension of the area covered by Trench 2 of the evaluation and yielded several phases of activity. The earliest of which were medieval and involved the exploitation of a natural channel, orientated north-south, which was later damned and filled as part of the construction of Bermondsey wall. The area was then overlain by a similar sequence of postmedieval deposits and buildings as those found in the evaluation. An Archaeological Post Excavation Assessment Jamieson, D London : Museum of London Archaeology Service, 2003, 56pp, figs, tabs, refs The evaluation and subsequent excavation at Bombay Wharf revealed a paleochannel cut by a medieval wooden drain, a 15th century river wall and ditch, and a timber land tie structure of 17th or 18th century date. The flints dated from the Mesolithic to the Iron Age. Also observed were the remains of post-medieval timber lined tanning pits. Archaeological Watching Brief Norton, A Oxford : Oxford Archaeology, 2002, 11pp, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: Oxford Archaeology The work was carried out as part of the Tower Environs Scheme, a major project to enhance the setting of the Tower of London. The investigation revealed a 17th century revetment wall, with an associated cobbled surface. Later revetment walls had superseded the 17th century structure, which had been buried beneath a sequence of levelling deposits. Archaeological Monitoring of Geotechnical Test Pits Elsden, N London : Museum of London Archaeology Service, 2002, 32pp, pls, figs, refs The geotechnical test pits monitored were insufficiently deep to reveal remains definitely associated with Davies' Bear Garden of One wall and a surface may have been of late 17th or 18th century date, but are more likely to be of the later date. The other remains observed were brick walls, floors, and a cess pit of 18th or 19th century date. Re-deposited glassworks waste were redeposited in an 18th century cellar. [Au(abr)] 5
