The names are related to the combinations. 1. Harmony A pleasing and harmonising combination of colors that are similar in level and/or tone. Harmony colors can be used for all ages, it gives a natural look and integration with the own hair color. 9

Contrast A relationship of opposites, which creates interest, variety and excitement in a design. In hair color, contrasting colors are at least three levels apart. In hair color, colors can progress from light to dark and it contains 3 colors. Slide 14 Consultation - The consultation sheet - The guarantee card - The client/salon agreement As with all hairdressing services, consultation is the key to success. Before you decide to apply Fill-In extensions or DoubleHair it is wise that you have a consultation appointment with the client. You have to discuss the cost, maintenance time, return appointments and rules for guarantee. But, first of all you (the hairdresser) are the professional and you have to decide which extensions are right for the client. Consultation sheet Here you will find everything you need to find out if extensions are right for your client. Give every student a consultation form and go through the sheet (see enclosures for the sheet) Guarantee card You find this in every treatment package Client/Salon agreement When both parties agree to proceed with the hair attachment it is advisible to make and sign a client/salon agreement. Give a copy of this agreement to the client. You can find an example of the client/salon agreement on the consultation form. 10

12 Slide 15 Consultation - What questions to ask during consultation The following questions help you to find out if DoubleHair Color & Volume is the right product for the client. What style would you like? Is this possible with extensions or DoubleHair? What length would you like? Is this possible with extensions or DoubleHair? Why do you want extensions/doublehair Color & Volume Have you had extensions before? Do you find it easy to look after your own hair? Extra hair means extra care! Would you mind spending more time taking care of your hair? How often do you wash your hair? What problems do you feel you have with your hair? Do you have a sensitive skin, scalp? The extra weight of the hair can cause problems. Have you suffered from hair loss? Are you on any medication? Some medications can cause hair loss. Slide 16 Consultation - Different types of clients with a role play of the 3 types (max. 5 minutes each) - Different Questioning techniques Advise your client well. The quality of your advice depends mostly on the product knowledge you have. If you have the correct knowledge, you can start thinking about how to get your advice accepted. How do you talk about color in our salons? Is this only chemical? Do you know what the client wants? What questions do you ask the client? Do you lead the conversation? Different clients 1. The client who knows what she wants. 2. The client who doesn t know what she wants. 3. The client who needs their hairdressers advice. Let the participants read the information about the types of clients, chapter 5, consultation in the coursebook and ask them to do a role play of these 3 types of clients. Questioning technique Going along the advise with your client you have to keep up the conversation. To get useful information you have to be aware that there are different tools you can use during your conversation. Use different questions to get information. 11

Application of extensions and DoubleHair is a good extra service that completes your salon service. Extensions are one of the most profitable salon services these days. On the backside of the DoubleHair Color & Volume strip you find two positioning clips. These clips are designed for a non-permanent character. Make fringes, create highlights, play with colors in an unlimited way! Step by step application with positioning clips: 1. Make a parting in the hair. 2. Click the positioning clips open 3. Place DoubleHair on the lower part of the parting 4. Lock the DoubleHair by closing the positioning clips 5. The DoubleHair is now fixed and the hair can now be styled 6. Finished look 12

14 Slide 19 Application - Application with Plusbonds When the client likes the colors and design you proposed you can make a (semi) permanent application with Plusbonds. The strip is connected at 4 fixed points, which creates a unique locking system. When the own hair needs to be colored, or permed, it has to be done at least 3 days before you start to apply the extensions or DoubleHair! Step by step application with Plusbonds: 1. Remove the positioning clips and open the strip, 2. Make a parting in the hair. Follow the rounding of the head. 3. Place the DoubleHair on the parting, flip back the top part of the DoubleHair. Fix with a hairclip. Make sure that the top layer is on top and the strip is placed max 0.5 cm under the parting. 4. Pull strands through the 3 cells of the DoubleHair (6 strands). The amount of hair of one strand should be the same as one finishing extension. Use the crochet needle to pull the strands through the locking points. 5. Place the protector around two hair strands from different cells and secure it with a clip. This will create a neat and clean area. Make the protector slide down slightly and evenly so that the hair hangs down loosely without any strain. 6. Place the bonding in your connector. Wait till it starts to bubble. 7. Lock 2 hair strands from different cells together with a Plusbond. Hold the extension/bond at the right distance cm from the scalp. 8. Roll the Plusbond with your fingers to seal the bonding. 9. Check if the hair is not projected. The hair should hang down loosely. 10. Repeat step 6 to 9 for the other (middle) strands. 11. Pull a hairstrand to the left locking point and take a hairstrand from the space next to the DoubleHair. Lock these two strands the same way as you did with the other strands. Repeat at the right side of the DoubleHair. 12. Now the DoubleHair is secured with 4 Plusbonds. 13. Flip back the top part of the DoubleHair to cover the bondings 14. Pull some own hair from underneath the DoubleHair to partially cover the strip. 15. 15 Slide Designs - The used colors - The effect of the design Ask if the participants can tell where the DoubleHair is placed, howmany pieces in what lengths without looking in the coursebook. Slide 26 Designs - The design tips and tricks Design tips and tricks There are some basic designs which you can use for different purposes, here you find some examples 1. Circle design The circle design gives us the opportunity to spread the color around the scalp. You can choose for a small or a big circle. A small circle placed at the top can give a sunny effect. Especially when you use light colors. 2. Fishtail design The fishtail design gives us the opportunity to place the DoubleHair color strip high above the scalp. If you use natural colors mixed with strong colors you will not see the placement of the treatment. Fishtail can be placed at the top but also at the back or in the neck. 3. Zigzag design Zigzag gives a great color spread in the hairstyle. It is easy to place and can be used in short, middle length and long hair 4. Diagonal design The diagonal technique is especially for a-symmetric looks. This technique can be used from 3 DoubleHair strips. 5. Double placement design To build up volume we use the Double placement. Double placements can be used in the front of the face, for example filling up a lock in the face. Place two DoubleHair strips above each other. 6. Triangle design A triangle is used for making lots of volume at the crown. Use natural hair colors to build op the shape. 14

17 Slide 29 Removing with the Quick Remover - The removal Removal of Balmain extensions is a simple, safe and easy process, which does not damage the natural hair in anyway if it's performed by your extension stylist. Before you remove the bonds wash the client s hair with a correct shampoo and dry it. In case of a full length extension, divide the hair again in 5 areas. 1. Place the bonding into pincer 2. Pull the dissolvent trigger to release a measured amount of dissolvent onto the bond, the UV light is automatically activated 3. Pull the pincer trigger to crush bond, repeat pincer trigger movement if required. 4. The bond can now be removed 5. Comb out any bond residue left on natural hair 6. Wash the hair thoroughly using Bamain Shampoo. Let the student practice the removal with the Quick Remover. Make sure you have prepared a mannequin with soft bonds or old bonds. 18 Slide 31 Keeping up your knowledge - Other courses Color & Design course for Fill-In Extensions During this training you will learn everything about the product Fill-in extensions, the application, the difference in structures; creative ideas, the coloring & permanent waving and everything about the hair care at home. Length & Volume for DoubleHair You work with our unique system DoubleHair. The main subject during this training will be customer advice. Designing a lengthening matching your client s hairstyle, the application of DoubleHair, hair integration through cutting techniques and how the clients can take care of their new hair in the best possible way. Length & Volume can only be followed after the Color & Design training. School Program school workshop for Fill-In Extensions In a two-hour workshop the students get to know the world of Balmain hair extensions. The training is a mixture of theory and practice. Product information, the application, creative ideas and learning to advise the customer are the main subjects during this workshop. Train-the-Trainer become a trainer yourself If you want to get one step further it is possible to attend a Train-the-Trainer course. Next to the regular training on various locations throughout the world, the Academy for Hair Alternatives has started a complete new training Train-the-Trainer. This is a super one week training for hairdressers, who want to become a trainer themselves. 20 Enclosures Consultation sheet What you and your hairdresser should discuss Before you decide to apply extensions it is wise that you have a consultation appointment with your hairdresser. The hairdresser has to decide if extensions are right for you. Here you have some questions and theories you have to discuss at the initial consultation. The answers you are looking for should demonstrate if the expectations have thought through and if there is a positive and realistic view of what extensions will do. What style would you like?... What lenght would you like?... Why do you want extensions?... Have you had extensions before?... Do you find it easy to look after your own hair?... Would you mind spending more time taking care of your hair?... How often do you wash your hair?... What problems do you feel you have with your hair?... Do you have a sensitive skin, scalp?... Have you suffered from hair loss?... Are you on any medication?... Have you just given birth?... You should be confident that you are able to look after your own natural hair, if you are not, it is unlikely that you will be able to look after your new hair additions. If your hair is in poor condition, over processed, severely damaged, extremely fine and shows reason for concern, if you have a sensitive scalp or skin complaints, we would strongly recommend that your hairdresser carries out a strand test. Have several extensions applied and monitor the reaction, we suggest these are worn for 5 days and then return to the hairdresser to check if there have been no obvious difficulties. Same rule applies for those on medications or post pregnancy. The hairdresser will ask about your life style; the time you spend on your hair, the quality of after care you give your hair, do you blow dry, condition, style or are you a wash and go sort of client! The hairdresser will check if there are any area s of concern that may indicate that the client may not be right for extensions or DoubleHair, for example, suffers from dandruff, psoriasis or has over processed hair. Client/salon agreement The hairdresser will check your hair structure, is your structure suitable for hair additions? A good rule to adhere to is that you must only double the length of the natural hair to keep it looking realistic and manageable. Is the natural hair long enough? The hair must be the minimum of 8cm at the nape and 12cm at the top of the head. Does your hair need a pre-cut? One length hair cannot be extended; the hair must be softened and slightly layered before lengthening. Does your hair need to be colored? It is better to do this a few days in advance. Keep in mind that if you want to re-use the DoubleHair you should treat the hair with care! If there is any doubt about your expectations, the ability to look after your own hair or your health, then trust on the hairdresser s professional judgement. On some occasions it is better to say, sorry extensions are not suitable for you, and discuss another hairdressing service as an alternative. Frequently asked questions & answers How long will they last? Answer: 3 to 4 months depending on your natural hair growth, after care regime and maintenance programme. Can I have them put in again? Answer: Yes, your Balmain extensions are re-usable, using the Balmain Rebond system and the quality of the hair is guaranteed for 6 months. Can I take them out myself? Answer: No, your Balmain Extension Stylist must carry out the removal process. Will my hair be damaged? Answer: No, you will not sustain damage if your extensions have been applied and removed correctly by a qualified Balmain extension stylist. How often should I wash my hair? Answer: We would recommend every other day. This will prevent any build up of natural oils on the scalp which could affect the durability of the bond. Can I tie my hair back? Answer: Yes, but we would advise that you wear in tied in a loose scrunchie at the nape of the neck. I have well readed and understand all information on this consultation form. I answered all questions on this form truthfully. I fully understand the content and the procedure explained during my consultation. I understand that costs have to be made by the salon, ordering stock and reserving appointment. Herefor I pay a deposit as a guarantee if needed. The deposit is deductible from the total final bill. Balmain DoubleHair is an innovative method of adding volume, colour and adding length to your natural hair, the possibilities are endless. The Balmain DoubleHair is 100% human hair and is available in 6 pre-colored and 3 non-colored tones. The non-colored hair can be dyed in any color you want. Balmain Fill-in extensions are suitable for just about everybody. How is DoubleHair applied? DoubleHair is connected with your natural hair by using a small wax bond. The bond will remain in place up to 4 months and will not damage the natural hair in any way. Ask your Extensions Stylist for a more detailed explanation about the attachment method. How is DoubleHair maintained? Depending on the natural hairgrowth the DoubleHair needs to be re-applied within 3-4 months or the bond and DoubleHair may become visible. To compliment your home aftercare regime and help you keep your extensions beautiful, we recommend a regular maintenance visit to your extension stylist. This could be every four to eight weeks and your stylist can re-apply DoubleHair needs new placement. This will en-sure they stay looking great. We recommend a full removal must be done around 3 months. This is because as the extension grows down the hair shaft, the bond begins to show and your natural hair loss is held inside the extension. If they are not removed at this time it could cause damage to the natural hair. Removal & re-application Removal is a simple procedure, which does not damage the hair in anyway if performed by your Balmain Extension Stylist. A removal solution is applied to the Wax Bond and the bond disintegrates and the extension is removed. Your hair is then brushed thoroughly and shampooed, conditioned and blow-dried. Balmain guarantees the condition of the Human Hair extensions for 6 months and they may last longer if they are properly cared for. The good news is that your stylist can re-apply a percentage of the extensions using the Balmain Rebond system, therefore re-application is very cost effective, significantly lower that the cost of your first extension application. Caring for your new hair. Long beautiful hair is a sign of a radiance, health and luxury. To maintain your extensions in premium condition just follow these simple steps and your hair will remain radiant, healthy and beautiful. Brushing When brushing your hair it is always better to use a large soft bristle brush. The Balmain brush is recommended, as this will ensure the hair does not snag or catch your extensions or natural hair, as other types of brushes might. Using the recommended Balmain brush will leave the hair shiny and in optimum condition. We recommend that you begin brushing at the ends of the hair, then move up to mid length and finally brush the root area. Curly extensions should not be brushed or blowdryed. This will make the hair look frizzy. Sort these extensions with your fingers. Never brush the hair when it is wet! Cleansing First brush your hair thoroughly, then soak with warm water, we would suggest that you do not turn the head upside down but always wash from the crown down. Next apply shampoo, we recommend using Hair Consult Aloe Vera Therapy Cleanser. Distribute your normal amount of shampoo at the root area; gently massaging in small circles over the scalp area, this will cleanse both the natural hair and your extensions. There is no requirement to scrub the midlength or ends as these will be cleansed sufficiently during the rinsing process. Rinse thoroughly and repeat if necessary. Do not wash the hair in the first 24 hours after the extension application, the extensions need to settle. Conditioning All hair needs conditioning whether natural or extensions, to condition we recommend you apply Hair Consult Aloe Vera Therapy Hair Repair every time you wash your hair. Apply the conditioner to the midlengths and ends only, gently massage, distributing the conditioner thoroughly, you can brush the ends using your soft bristle brush this will help ensure every hair is coated thoroughly with conditioner. You should leave the conditioning treatment on for a minimum of 3 minutes and a maximum of 10 minutes, once conditioned, rinse thoroughly with warm water. We also offer Hair Consult stay-in conditioner for human hair. This gives the hair a nice natural shine and saves time. If the hair ends are dry advice to use Hair Consult Oil treatment for hair ends. Towel drying After rinsing squeeze excess water from the hair and wrap a towel around the head and gently pat towel to remove moisture from hair, avoid rubbing at scalp and hair. Next, sort the hair gently with your fingers, do not use a brush or comb on wet hair. Drying and Styling You can leave the hair to dry naturally or blow-dry. If using a hairdryer we suggest that you use a low heat and a soft bristle brush to style. Once dry, you may style using Carmen, Hot Rollers, Hot Sticks, Curling Tongs or Hair Straighteners. You may safely assume that whatever is good for our own hair is good for the Human Hair extensions. Do not use heat on fiber extensions. If you use finish products, be sure that you use those with a low alcohol percentage. Alcohol damages the extensions. You can use styling products but not serums; again these could damage the wax bond. Hot hints We recommend to use our specially developed Hair Consult haircare products. These products are tested thoroughly with our extensions. The Aloë Vera Therapy products bring the scalp and the hair in topcondition so extensions can be worn without problems. We also guarantee the best grip of the extension when our haircare products are used. Do not use Shampoos or Conditioners that contain oils or fruit acids, such as Wheatgerm or Citrus, using shampoos that contain these ingredients could result in damage to your extension bonds and this will shorten the wearing time. If you have an oily scalp wash hair regularly, build up of natural oils could lead to your wax bonds slipping or falling out. When rinsing hair, rinse for a few seconds extra as the extra volume created by your extension may mean it takes a little longer to rinse. Some extensions can fall out in the first few days, collect them so they can be re-attached with Plusbonds. Do not needlessly fiddle with the bonds. This may damage the wax. At night time gently tie your hair back in a loose braid or twist; this will help prevent tangles or knots. Do not sleep with wet hair. Treat your extensions with the same respect as your natural hair, good aftercare, a regular maintenance programme with your extension stylist will keep your hair looking great for longer. If you regularly swim or are planning to holiday whilst wearing extensions we recommend when swimming in the sea or a swimming pool that you wear a protective bathing cap as the chemicals in the pool or salt levels in the sea may affect your extensions. Do not needlessly fiddle with the bonds. This may damage the wax. After care: Make an appointment to check the extensions or bonds within days! Ask the hairdresser to remove extensions that make you feel uncomfortable and attach new ones. There should not be too many of these. 20
