The nursery has been a hive of activity preparing the site for another season. Now that autumn is well and truly upon us it is an ideal time to plant trees and shrubs, the soil is still warm enough for the roots to carry on growing even if the leaves are falling, giving the plant a good start for next spring. We have our usual arrival of new fruit and ornamental trees as well as reliable hardy hedge plants, large specimen trees and conifers and we are expecting some outstanding Japanese maples. Come in and have a look at the nursery, the start of the tree planting season is my favourite time of year I d like to share it with you! Graham Grimmett 3

4 HEATHFIELD S LARGEST CARD SHOP Greeting Cards For Most Occasions A Selection of Gifts Stockists of "Me to You Bears" and "Blue Nose Friends" Helium Balloons GEMINI GREETINGS Monday to Saturday 9am - 5pm Selwyns Wood Autumn 2013 As I write this article summer is turning to autumn; early morning mists, cooler temperatures and shorter days mark the transition. In the Sussex Wildlife Trust s Selwyns Wood reserve there are also changes. Clusters of red berries can be seen hanging from the branches of the mountain ash, really the Rowan; various fungi, including the classic picture-book toadstool Fly Agaric unmistakable by its red cap with white spots, are pushing through the leaf-litter, and the purple of the heather on the heathland area is just starting to fade. However this year we can look back on a lovely summer. I am sure that most of you will have noticed the number of butterflies around; Peacocks, Red Admirals and Whites abounding. In Selwyns Wood the volunteers, who do a weekly butterfly survey have been rewarded with many sightings. Not only have there been large numbers of our regulars : Speckled Woods, Ringlets and Meadow Browns but also an increase in the number of Gatekeepers, a butterfly we normally record but usually at lower levels. What gives us greatest pleasure is when we see our two special woodland butterflies the Silver-washed Fritillary and the White Admiral and this year we have had several sightings of both species. We were also lucky enough to see a Clouded Yellow flitting quickly over the heather. This butterfly is a migrant arriving from France and many have been seen in Sussex this year so it is was good that one decided to pay us a quick visit at Selwyns Wood. Trevor Hince, Volunteer Reserve Manager ADVERTISEMENT CHRISTMAS IS COMING REMEMBER TO TREAT YOUR PETS THIS YEAR! The Pet Food Shop has been serving the people and pets of Heathfield since Started by Joan Smith and then run by Paul Clark they have created a family business that puts great emphasis on maintaining a good relationship with its customers and the community of Heathfield. Paul is now in semi-retirement but the present staffing team are continuing the ethos of customers first and involvement in the community. All staff are residents of Heathfield and over recent months have either taken part themselves or sponsored local events. They are also supporters of Heathfield Works! a local charity that helps teenagers into employment and have recently employed a participant into the staffing team with great success. The basic principles of The Pet Food Shop are to provide products that the customer needs, when they need them and always going the extra mile to supply any item not generally stocked within a few days. Recent innovations include a customer delivery service within a 10 mile radius of Heathfield and gift vouchers. For more information visit or Facebook

5 Heathfield FIRST News From Burwash Monday Painters We have come to the end of a summer full of great outdoor painting opportunities, such as Bayham Abbey, Bewl Water and many more beautiful treasures and pretty corners in this very scenic county in which we live. If you like to paint and would like to join our very friendly group you would be made very welcome. We do not have painting classes during the winter but from the 7 October we meet in the Burwash Village Hall, 1.00pm, every Monday, to share our interest in producing very individual paintings and other artwork to show in our annual exhibition which was held on the 2 November. We are grateful to everyone who helps us to advertise our exhibition and to gain new members who add more variety and painting experience to our group. If you would like more information about us you may like to look at our website; or phone Grace on or Anne on Heathfield Community Police Team Update Heathfield has been relatively peaceful this summer with no noticeable crime patterns and very few incidents of anti-social behaviour. We have had a few reports of noisy cars late at night and have worked some later shifts to catch and advise any would be boy racers". There is mostly no intention to annoy others but thoughtlessness about how late at night it is and also how readily noise can travel. One of the initiatives that NPT teams force wide has been taking part in is OP SIGNATURE". Op Signature is aimed at stopping the postal, or phone scams. While anyone can be a victim, typically, the scammers will pick an elderly person usually with a good income. The scams are varied and some will suggest the victim is entitled to an inheritance, or there is an offer of an investment. Others will send goods such as cakes or chocolates at hugely inflated prices and keep sending such items taking payment straight from the victim s bank account and can be very difficult to cancel. These are just a few examples and there are many variations to these scams. As many of the victims are elderly and can be feeling isolated they will often get addicted to the contact that the scams offer, and not see it for the scam it is - or be too embarrassed to admit they had been taken in. The victims are often people who have made wise investments in the past and think this is why they have been chosen and there have been cases where hundreds of thousands of pounds have been lost by the victim. If you are getting this type of contact or know or suspect someone may be targeted do give us a call at Heathfield and we can visit and offer advice and ensure that the right support is in place. We have had a change of Chief Inspector at Wealden as Dick Coates has retired and Chief Inspector Gary Pike has taken his place. You may have noticed in the press that Heathfield Police Station was to be closed and relocated, however, at this time it looks unlikely this will happen as there are no better sites locally to relocate to. Just a reminder that I as the NPT sergeant for the area, PC Kelly Simmonds, PC Ted Anderson and PCSO's Fleur Whitaker, Geraldine Hodgens, Liz McDonagh, Paula Gatward, Matt Neve and Matt Boyle all work out of the Heathfield Police Station. We all work shifts and weekends and the days and times, therefore, vary. If you want to see anyone at the Police station either call or us and book an appointment. We are extremely grateful to Santander, Trading 4 U, The Pet Food Shop and Taylors Fish Bar for their generous sponsorship of these two events and Santander for their donation of 5,000. We would also like to thank the Courier Group, the Co-operative Society, Heathfield Ironmongers and Heathfield Rotary, as well as a number of trusts, foundations and private individuals who have supported the project. 9 Heathfield and Waldron Twinning Association Once again the Twinning Association has enjoyed a very successful year. At the end of June the group went to Forges-les-Eaux for the weekend and were royally entertained. As always we had a warm welcome from our hosts and experienced two museum visits, a picnic and a meal in a restaurant apart from anything that, individually, we managed to do. In September the group from Forges (16 people) came here and an enormously successful weekend was enjoyed by all. On the Saturday evening we played skittles in the pub at Barcombe and the French thought that this was marvellous. A truly riotous evening ensued! In spite of the rain we managed an interesting visit to Hever Castle and grounds on the Sunday, with a communal picnic in Hever Village Hall to get the day off to a good start. Apart from these excellent exchanges we have enjoyed the choral weekend in June which saw Heathfield Choral Society entertaining three choral societies from the Forges area. There was a memorable concert involving all choirs and both musical directors in the Kings Church on the Saturday evening followed by a communal meal in Broad Oak Village Hall which truly cemented the friendships being made. Then in July Waldron Croquet Club played the annual match against the club from Catenay, an event which originated in an introduction through the Twinning Association. This time the match took place in Catenay, on one of the hottest weekends of the year. Sadly Waldron lost, but not catastrophically, but the friendliness of the occasion and the links made with the players in Catenay is what really matters. And, of course, Francine brought her delicious Norman cheeses to Le Marché at the end of August. As always we have the occasional Soirée Française, with our efforts at speaking French oiled by refreshments. 12 Seasons Greetings to the whole community! Thanks to those who have supported and shown us appreciation throughout this year. This really encourages us to keep going, especially when the weather is wet and cold. We count it a privilege to walk about in our community and be of service when we can. Following a review we have made some changes this autumn, as below: New location we have moved our base to Welcome Baptist Church, Alexandra Road, who have allowed Street Pastors to use their lounge on Fridays. New patrol routes this change of venue has facilitated walking in different locations, especially where there is no CCTV; as well Broad Oak Village Hall as maintaining contact with some key spots in and around town. So look out for Street Pastors in your street or near your school. They will be pleased to greet you and help if needed. New Schedule - Street Pastors now go out on the second and fourth Friday late afternoon each month. We still go out the other Friday evenings as before. New Bishop of Chichester - Street Pastors have been invited to meet Bishop Martin when he visits churches and community projects in this area in December. This has been a special year for Street Pastors nationally as they celebrated 10 years with a special event at Southwark The Village Hall continues to be very busy and is the focal point of the community. Broad Oak Pre-school is based here and other regular groups include Zumba classes, Tae Kwon Do, Table Tennis, Short Mat Bowls, Yoga and Ballet classes. The hall is proving to be a very popular venue everything from children s parties to wedding receptions and several groups use the hall every year for their events. Our bookings have increased from last year and we are very pleased to hear that we are being recommended as a great venue by many who use the hall. For more information about Chestnut Tree House visit our website August Bank Holiday Le Marché très bien! The French market day in Heathfield was very good in so many ways. The weather was delightful, the crowds turned out in their thousands, the music as usual played a big part in the day, the fire station celebrated their 90th anniversary in style and sales from stalls and shops reached a record. Richard Ridley, chairman of the organising committee, said It was a fantastic day, an absolutely gorgeous day. It started off a little chilly, but by 10 am the sun was out and the day was warm. We definitely think that there were record crowds at this, the biggest market of its kind in South East England. The French side of the market specialised in cheese, baked products, fruit and vegetables but they also sold food they cooked on site (crèpes, paella, jumbo prawns). Sales went through the roof and all stall holders seem delighted with the day. The bands, organised by Eric Kemp, were first class and enjoyed by all and included the Heathfield Silver Band, Sussex Stompers Jazz band and the Horsham Accordion Band. The entertainment also included special treats for children provided by Marco the Magician and Andy Bosco. Heathfield s Fire Station open day was a great success with crowds of children, and adults, climbing in and out of the engines on display and enjoying the demonstrations. More local shops than ever opened their doors and all of them I talked to had their best year of sales. Local stall holders also had a very good day with several selling all their products before the market closed at 3.30pm.All in all we try each year to make the day bigger and better and I think this year we succeeded. 16 The allotments at Theobalds Green have been very successful and almost all of the plots are now taken. We are very grateful to all the officers of the Allotment Association for all their hard work in helping to get them up and running. The next phase is the setting out and laying out of the burial ground and woodland burial ground and we are currently having discussions with the Natural Death Centre as to the best way of achieving this. Work will take place during 2014 to allow burials to commence early in We are currently working hard on the Council s budget for the 2014/2015 financial year. It is likely to be a very difficult process because Government funding to Wealden District Council is changing and we are anticipating that there will be a shortfall in our own budget as a result. Unfortunately the Government will not release the actual figures until late December which is too late for our normal budget setting timescale, so we may have to carry out last minute adjustments to the figures. 17 Remember Heffle Cuckoo Fair 26 April 2014 Heathfield FIRST For newcomers to our area Heffle is the ancient name for Heathfield. Since taking the Fair back to its roots in Cade Street, Old Heathfield, it has gone from strength to strength and every penny we raise goes to Demelza Hospice Care For Children to enable our lovely community nurses to help and support families in their homes. So if you would like to help or have any ideas to offer, we would love to hear from you. Please ring either Sandie or Nicky on or Audrey on hefflecuckoofair.org.uk Girlguiding - Heathfield and Horam District Girls only: Rainbows 5-7; Brownies 7-10; Guides 10-14; Senior Section 14+ All of our units had a busy programme organised for the summer and this included lots of outdoor activities. Some of our Brownies went on a pack holiday with some of the Uckfield Brownies and others went to a local village hall for a weekend pack holiday. These are always thoroughly enjoyed by the girls and great fun for everyone. The Guides also had a chance to camp with other guides from both Uckfield and Hailsham at our Division site in Chiddingly which is a beautiful setting. We had two activity days also at Bull River for all the ages which included circus skills, camp skills, cooking and many other things. The Brownies had a special afternoon called Brownie Revels which was just for them with the theme of the Wild West. Our Friends of Guiding ladies organised the day with lots of games, refreshments and some country dancing which proved very popular! Due to our large numbers of girls in each section we desperately need more adult helpers and would be really pleased to hear from anyone who would be able to volunteer for just a few hours a week or month. We also need some extra help with our Friends of Guiding committee who meet once or twice a term and help with District events from time to time and general support to us all. There is a great website with details nationally - and we also have a more local site with news - If you are interested in finding out more about helping us in Heathfield, please call Claire Burdett for more information.
