This annual physical theatre summer intensive training program, which was the first of its kind in Australia, will be led by Zen Zen Zo founders Lynne Bradley and Simon Woods, Resident Director Drew der Kinderen, and Guest Artist Younes Bachir (long-term collaborator with La Fura dels Baus). The aim of this 2-week course is to introduce artists to a range of physical theatre disciplines including Zen Zen Zo s specialty areas of the Suzuki Method, Butoh, and the Viewpoints, as well as Bachir s Andante Method. Stomping Ground will provide a solid base in these approaches focusing on developing the performer s physical, vocal and ensemble skills. It is also a journey of transformation both personally and professionally as participants begin the new year by refining their goals for 2014, shaping their craft, and meeting fellow artists with similar interests and beliefs. The first session will take place on Sunday 5 January from 6 9 pm. The primary inspiration for this training has come from the Suzuki Company of Toga (Japan) and the Saratoga International Theatre Institute (New York). This method takes participants through a fascinating minefield of diverse and challenging techniques that work towards fusing body, voice, mind and spirit. It integrates a challenging spectrum of advanced performance training techniques to cultivate the actor s physical energy, vocal quality and range, concentration, ensemble awareness and imagination. Training is a moving experience to witness: the intense and personal journeys of fellow human beings of all shapes and sizes as they manifest, explore and shape their creative impulses through extraordinary physical and vocal forms. Everyone works from their physical being to their sub-conscious core to find a new relationship with themselves and the performance space they inhabit and energise. Through this method you are led to the edges of your potential, the place where learning and self-discovery is optimal. This week-long component of Stomping Ground will provide an introduction to the fundamental principles and practices used in Zen Zen Zo s year-round company training. Teachers: Drew der Kinderen & Simon Woods (Guest Teacher) DREW DER KINDEREN began working with Zen Zen Zo in 2006 and is currently a Resident Director with the company. Drew has directed many of Zen Zen Zo s Youth Productions, including Blood Wedding, Future//Culture>, The Tempest, Medea, A Midsummer Night s Dream, Antigone, The Bacchae, Rising, and A Practical User s Guide to the Afterlife (co-production with Vena Cava). In 2011 Drew wrote and directed Hello Spaceboy! for Zen Zen Zo which has toured into primary schools around the state for 2 years with ArtsLink, and featured in last year s OUT OF THE BOX Festival at QPAC. Drew s IN THE RAW productions for the company include Last Drinks and the upcoming Medea: The River Runs Backwards. Drew is a Principal Instructor with the Zen Zen Zo Training Centre and has taught the Suzuki Method, the Viewpoints and Butoh around Australia and abroad for the past 5 years. SIMON WOODS founded Zen Zen Zo Physical Theatre with Lynne Bradley in 1992 and is currently the Director of the Performance Company. In 2011 Simon joined the Queensland Performing Arts Centre as a Producer. He is one of Australia s leading instructors in the Suzuki Actor Training Method. Over 15 years of teaching and directing, Simon has also run numerous Suzuki/Viewpoints training programs in Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong and Canada. As a resident in Japan from Simon studied Noh theatre and the Suzuki Actor Training Method. Highlights include participating in Suzuki Tadashi s International Masterclass in New York (1994) and Toga, Japan (2007). He has also observed the director at work preparing several productions for the renowned SCOT Company. Simon received a Master of Arts in Drama (UQ) in 2006 for research on the application of the Suzuki Method for Western performers.

Butoh Dance-Theatre The passion of the Butoh dancer is an inner one. What you see on the outside is always infinitely subtle. You see a trace of the emotion, never the emotion itself.

They disclose only just enough to allow you to imagine an inner poetic landscape. This is much more interesting. ROBERT LePAGE Butoh is a way of life, not an organisation of movements.

KAZUO OHNO (co-founder of Butoh) Butoh is a contemporary avant-garde dance-theatre form that originated in Japan.

It combines dance, theatre, improvisation, and ritual, crossing cultural borders in its search for the universal.

5 Butoh Dance-Theatre The passion of the Butoh dancer is an inner one. What you see on the outside is always infinitely subtle. You see a trace of the emotion, never the emotion itself. In the west we have a tendency to throw ourselves against walls as a way to indicate passion. The Japanese just show traces, not unlike their prints, their art of leaving traces on paper. They disclose only just enough to allow you to imagine an inner poetic landscape. This is much more interesting. ROBERT LePAGE Butoh is a way of life, not an organisation of movements. It is an art of improvisation. It is dangerous. I try to carry in my body all the weight and mystery of life, to follow my memories until I reach my mother s womb. KAZUO OHNO (co-founder of Butoh) Butoh is a contemporary avant-garde dance-theatre form that originated in Japan. It has been described as a dance of the senses, of pure emotional states expressed through the body (instead of through words), of universal imagery, of poetry and metaphor. It combines dance, theatre, improvisation, and ritual, crossing cultural borders in its search for the universal. At its heart, Butoh aims to reveal the unconscious, inner world of the performer, stripped of his/her social mask. For this reason no prior movement training is necessary, as the classes aim to find each person s unique physical expression, unencumbered by language, tradition or social conditioning. Butoh develops deep focus and physical awareness, a rich imagination, courage, and the ability to express emotions honestly and openly with the entire body. Teacher: Lynne Bradley LYNNE BRADLEY has worked as a director, choreographer, performer and actor-trainer in Brisbane and abroad for the past 25 years. In 1992 she founded Zen Zen Zo Physical Theatre with Simon Woods, was the Artistic Director until 2011, and is now the Director of the Training Centre. Her other directorial credits include: QPAC/XLD: The Mayne Inheritance; Vegas Nerve: Cooking Up A Princess; TAFE: The Bacchae, Outcasts; UQ: Unspeakable Acts of Privacy (Anywhere Festival), Ubu Rex, Ghost Paths, Manfred; La Boite: Wicked Bodies (co-production with Zen Zen Zo; Magdalena Festival), Black Chicks Talking (Assistant Director). Lynne has also performed in and choreographed many Zen Zen Zo productions. Lynne has received awards for her choreography of Macbeth: As Told by the Weird Sisters and Unleashed, and direction of Sub-Con Warrior 1 & Zeitgeist. Cabaret and The Tempest both received Matilda Awards for BEST PRODUCTION. TRaINING and TEaChING: Lynne is currently a Principal Instructor specializing in movement and physical theatre. Her training includes the Suzuki Method, Noh, Nihon Buyo and Butoh, which she studied intensively whilst living in Japan from , and again in 1999 (whilst on a Fellowship from the Brisbane City Council). Her Butoh teachers included founder Kazuo Ohno, Katsura Kan (Byakko-sha), Iwashita Toru (Sankai Juku) and Maro Akaji (Dairakudakan). In 1998 she received an Arts QLD professional development grant to study the Viewpoints with Anne Bogart and the SITI company in New York, and she and Simon Woods subsequently became the first teachers of this actor training method in Australia. In 2007 she received another grant to work with Dairakudakan in Japan, and has since returned regularly to train and perform with the company.

Bachir has created a workshop program that is a successful transference of those theatrical skills to international performance makers.

6 Andante Method BY Ex LA FURA DELS BAUS CoLLaBoRaToR All true language is incomprehensible, like the chatter of a beggar s teeth. ANTONIN ARTAUD The Andante Method stems from Younes Bachir s fourteen years experience of working with the legendary Spanish company La Fura dels Baus ( ). Bachir has created a workshop program that is a successful transference of those theatrical skills to international performance makers. Younes has been instrumental in the development of the language that has been named and known in the performance world as the Furan Language a language that the company employs to make their shows. This is a codified construct, a constant dialogue and friction between setting, audience and performers leading to a style of performance that has made this celebrated Spanish company famous worldwide. The Andante Method is an adaptation of the Furan Language combined with an investigation of Contemporary European Performance. In the Andante workshop/working process, Younes adapts the work to suit the particular environment and the individual participants. The Andante Method exposes participating artists to Younes unique working methodology, while incorporating local performers and a local perspective. During the workshop participants will learn the different performance, dramatic, plastic and spatial skills that are involved in the realization of a Total Theatre piece. Teacher: Younes Bachir, (Ex LA FURA DELS BAUS CoLLaBoRaToR) YOUNES BACHIR was a long-term collaborator with La Fura dels Baus ( ) and is currently a freelance director, actor and the Artistic Director of the ANDANTE PROJECT (Melbourne, Sydney, Darwin). He has over two decades of international experience in the performing arts. Younes studied at the Superior Theatre Conservatory in Brussels where he specialised in contemporary text and physical expression. In 1994 he obtained the Premier Prix in Dramatic Art and completed his studies with workshops under Carlo Bozzo in Comedia del Arte (Piccolo Teatro de Milano) and UltímaVez Dance Company (Belgium). In 1995 he moved to Barcelona where he joined La Fura dels Baus. Initially working as a performer, he appeared in numerous shows included W.I.P (Barcelona, Friburg, Brussels), Manes (World Tour), Fausto 3.0 (World Tour), DQ Opera (Barcelona), and Fausto 5.0 (Movie). In 2003 he began working as an Assistant Director with the company and completed many projects including the World Cylcing Championship 2007, 100 Years Casa Batló, and Dreams in Flight. For 6 years Younes also worked on the famous Ship Theatre NAUMON with internationally acclaimed opera director Carlus Padrissa. NAUMON is a floating performing arts center that has been to Barcelona, Sardinia, Portugal, Beirut, Taipei, Newcastle and Haifa carrying various artistic, educational and cultural creations. 7 The Viewpoints The Viewpoints are a philosophy of movement translated into a technique for 1) training performers and 2) creating movement on stage The Viewpoints are a set of names given to certain basic principles of movement; these names constitute a language for talking about what happens or works on stage the Viewpoints are points of awareness that a performer or creator has while working ANNE BOGART The Viewpoints is a training technique developed by renowned American director Anne Bogart which has been utilised by Zen Zen Zo as one of its core training methods over the past 15 years. The Viewpoints focuses on reawakening the actor s instincts through impulse work and play, and exploring the basic elements of performance the body in time and space so that the artist can learn to use them articulately when performing and creating new work. The training is all ensemble-based, with each actor learning to respond impulsively and playfully to their fellow performers. The Viewpoints also develops the fundamental performance skills that help the actor/ dancer/ performer achieve a dynamic stage presence. Anne Bogart visited Australia in 1997 for the first time to demonstrate the Viewpoints technique at the Victorian College of the Arts in a workshop in which Lynne Bradley participated. Simon Woods had previously studied the Viewpoints whilst in Saratoga Springs, NY, in Lynne and Simon have since studied intensively in America with Anne Bogart and the SITI Company, and were the first practitioners to teach and work with the Viewpoints in Australia. Many of the Zen Zen Zo company members have since traveled to the USA to work with the SITI company, and continue to actively explore and encourage this method s application to Australian artists, having taught at most major acting institutions around the country.
