Q What, in your mind, is the relationship between fashion and London? How has London informed your creative life? A Growing up in Australia, London was always considered the epicentre of the global fashion industry. Comparatively, it s quite a small bubble in Australia, so joining a larger community in London - although intimidating at first - has been a huge factor in my growth, creatively and business-wise. 08 Discover more on page 12 Q A What is your dream collaboration? Nike. Q What or who is your main inspiration? A Discarded packaging/polyethylenes and Nike products. Q If anyone alive or dead could wear your designs who would it be and why? A Serena Williams or Michael Jordan. True icons. Q What does London mean to you or what is your favourite thing about it? A London is all about hustle, working 24/7 and dreading the date rent is due each month. I love it though. Everyone s on their own express bullet train, travelling at a million miles an hour. Q Last text you sent/received? A DPD driver Francis will deliver your Nike order today 12:00-13:20. Not going to be in? Q What would you say your measure of success is? A I don t think success is quantifiable, it s more of a state of mind. Q Do you have a process when it comes to designing? A I design through limitation, whether that be literally or conceptually. I create boundaries and restrictions to ensure a design is as streamlined and logical as possible. Q When you were a kid, what were some of the things that you were into/obsessed with? A I was actually super obsessed with sewing ever since I got a sewing machine at an early age. My very first venture was a pencil case business I ran out of my locker in school during lunchbreaks. Q What does Positive Fashion mean to you and how do you incorporate this into your business? A For me, positive fashion is environmentally aware, sustainable and functional. I m really focused on extending the lifespan of products, through production methods, working with discarded products and on a garment practicality level. STUDIO ALCH 09

Q What is your dream collaboration? A COMME des GARÇONS. No question. 11 Q What or who is your main inspiration? A Mum and Dad. Q If anyone alive or dead could wear your designs who would it be and why? A Kurt Cobain. I used to rinse Nirvana as a teen, he saw the world for what it is. It s all in the music man. Q What does London mean to you or what is your favourite thing about it? A Multiculturalism. Q Last text you sent/received? A Last text I received: Soooo proud of u. Q What, in your mind, is the relationship between fashion and London? How has London informed your creative life? A You can DO whatever you want. There are no boundaries, or limitations, everything and everyone is connected. London has played a major role in my creative life, but I think the people I ve met along the way have also had a huge impact. Q What would you say your measure of success is? A Health and happiness. Q Do you have a process when it comes to designing? A I don t necessarily have a strict process, I spend a lot of time in books, at the beginning I always just have a few friends at my studio, they kinda do what they want and I just start working. I guess I like the idea of a creative energy and being surrounded by people who are able to create this atmosphere. paria Q When you were a kid, what were some of the things that you were into/obsessed with? A Sabrina The Teenage Witch, playing the violin/being in an orchestra and Monster Munch. Q Do you feel like in fashion it s important to push the boundaries to really make a positive impact? A Late Louise Wilson said I think the problem is that fashion has become too fashionable. For years, fashion wasn t fashionable. Today fashion is so fashion- able that it s almost embarrassing to say you re part of fashion. And she was totally right, especially in the age of kids growing up on instagram fashion seems like the go to route for everyone, but not everyone is aware of the hardships and struggles which are sugar-coated on the internet. Therefore making a meaningful, and educational impact is so key, especially for the kids, as they are the future. Q What is your dream collaboration? A Graffiti artist FUTURA. Q What or who is your main inspiration? A I get heavily inspired by my life experiences. I ve been having a very intense life, good and bad. Q If anyone alive or dead could wear your designs who would it be and why? A Pharrell Williams because he is one of the reasons why I work in fashion. Q Last text you sent/received? A London represents authenticity to me. I feel like people don t follow social norms especially when it comes to style and fashion. My friends are my favourite things about London. I have dear friends that I deeply love in this city. The last text I sent was to Joyce Lin, she s an amazing artist whom I m working with on a new furniture design project. Q What, in your mind, is the relationship between fashion and London? How has London informed your creative life? A London has a huge impact on my creative life. It has that special energy which helps me to channel my inner self and push my creativity further. Q What would you say your measure of success is? A I measure success by how happy I feel about a situation. Self-esteem and happiness are everything to me. Q Do you have a process when it comes to designing? My creative process is the unlikely encounter of two paradoxical realities. I like to mix different elements that are not supposed to be together. Q When you were a kid, what were some of the things that you were into/obsessed with? A Japanese anime, birds and rap music. Q Do you feel like in fashion it s important to push the boundaries to really make a positive impact? A Yes I do, not only in Fashion but everything one does in life. Q What does Positive Fashion mean to you and how do you incorporate this into your business? A To me Positive Fashion means transparency and honesty. I incorporate it in my business by being authentic with my art and true to myself with everybody I work with. 10 /FARZANEH 3.Paradis X PONY

Q What or who is your main inspiration? A My parents and my family are a big inspiration for me and I always look into my own heritage each season. In terms of fashion, two designers which have had a big impact on me are Yohji Yamamoto and Christopher Nemeth. Q If anyone alive or dead could wear your designs who would it be and why? A Miles Davis or Jimi Hendrix both were so forward-thinking with their aesthetic and overall vision. Q What does London mean to you or what is your favourite thing about it? A Multiculturalism. I live in one of the most diverse cities in the world, I wouldn t want to move anywhere else. Q Last text you sent/received? A Nabihah Iqbal because she is playing at the Jazz Cafe tonight and trying to make the show. Q What, in your mind, is the relationship between fashion and London? How has London informed your creative life? A London has had so many different sub-cultures throughout history such as teddy boys, skinheads and punks which has created a diversity in British style. We also have great fashion institutions in London such as Savile Row, Central Saint Martins and the RCA which creates a strong mixture of fashion creatives. 12 Q What would you say your measure of success is? A Connecting with people in Japan or any city worldwide, and seeing their life and how my designs can impact them positively, this is the ultimate reward for me. Q Do you have a process when it comes to designing? A Primary research is always key. Whenever I am looking at vintage clothing, old records, speaking with my family, or going to look at the V&A archives, I always need a primary source as I feel this is the strongest and purest form to find individuality for each season, everything has to have a personal connection. That s how I start and then build off into the collection. Q When you were a kid, what were some of the things that you were into/obsessed with? A I was really into brands like Stussy and collected a lot of sneakers as I worked at a streetwear store called Wellgosh back in Leicester. I also bought a lot of CD s and records which has always been a big part of my life. Q Do you feel like in fashion it s important to push the boundaries to really make A Q a positive impact? For me, pushing the boundaries means to try and reflect what Britain is today. As a brand, I m trying to show a true reflection of how I m sourcing and also collaborating with British artists and musicians. My brand reflects what it means to be British. As designers and creatives we have a responsibility to push the status quo. I feel that is something I ve been able to do with my collaborations: with other creatives in London through my presentations, showing what fashion can be to create a whole different feeling not yet experienced. What does Positive Fashion mean to you and how do you incorporate this into your business? A Being sustainable. I ve always sourced as many fabrics as possible in the UK and have always used British manufac- turing with an aim to have the lowest carbon footprint possible. Organic fabrics are also important as a respect for the environment (which provides us with these materials) is a priority. 13 Nicholas Daley

#discovery Inspiration is in the eye of the beholder. That s not precisely how the oft-quoted saying goes, but it doesn t make it less true as this eclectic collection of selected objects show. A handful of designers and brands, all showing on London Fashion Week Men s schedule this June, have chosen an object or trinket that, in one way or another, inspires their brand in general or the SS19 collection specifically. As you can tell, it s a diverse selection, everything from Nike Air Max sole units to images of melting ice caps, courtesy of NASA. And it s that width and breadth of both pop cultural as well as political sources of inspiration that helps define London s unique menswear scene. Often described as a city that fuses traditional craftsmanship with an avantgarde energy, London is about an attitude, a journey of discovery where we are constantly questioning what it means to live in the capital. It s a city that mirrors today s fast-paced and diverse society, the good and the bad in one metropolitan melting pot. But, perhaps, we sometimes read too much into it? It can also be clothes and, in this case, objects that have no ulterior motive. Perhaps it s just a cute toy designed to make you laugh or a jumper that puts a smile on your face when leaving the house? Surely, that s fashion, too. Make of it what you want to. As someone just said, it s all in the eye of the beholder. 9 01 I found it whilst hosting a workshop at the Nike HQ in Portland last year and actually use it as a coaster in my studio. 02 It s from America and we bought it on Ebay. For us it s about nostalgia.

03 04 I found this at a show called War and Peace. 05 It might be worthless to others but it means everything to this collection. The scissors made us realise something that s malfunctioning and undervalued can still be beautiful. 06 These images of change capture the melting glaciers from space, documenting the ravage of natural hazards due to global climate change. The images were captured by NASA, who kindly gave us permission to use them. They re really beautiful but also serve as a creative call to arms, capturing the effects of climate change and showing our planet in a state of flux.

07 We love our laughing green, and often very dusty, Buddha. He says, it doesn t matter, big or small, the main thing is to be happy and smile

10 12 The Hot Rod toy car reminds me of when we drove one from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. It s the great American road trip! I loved the mixture of iconography and child hood. 11

13 The object makes me smile and it s full of fun. I went to the museum of Schulz, which is fantastic. I often find inspiration from various cartoon garments, such as Snoopy, Charlie Brown and other Schulz creations

16 17 Introduced in 1947, the Barbour International A7 jacket has become an invaluable icon from our archive. Duncan Barbour, the third generation of the Barbour family and a keen motorcyclist himself, introduced the one piece International motorcycle suit. 18 The fork is typically associated with peasantry and hard labour, and symbolic of keeping the mind and the body focused on the earth, and this is why it compelled and influenced us.

20 19 This is my parent s original reggae club T-shirt, which they produced whilst running one of the first reggae clubs in Scotland from 1978 to They brought people together from different walks of life all through the power of music, and this T-shirt represents that.

NEWGEN The word NEWGEN can incite notions of fast pace, hard hitting, of-the-moment shooting stars, whose very identity is carved from our obsession with the NEW. What the current NEWGEN line-up encapsulates is the GEN - they are a model example of how we talk about our generation and how the future generation will talk about us. NEWGEN s menswear contingent hold three new faces this year: Per Götesson, with BIANCA SAUNDERS and paria /FARZANEH as Ones To Watch. Per, whose soft, subtle and gently teased out designs evoke ethereal, delicate princes, has a way with denim that cultivates soft forms and elegantly rumpled silhouettes. paria /FARZANEH is a designer of confidence and conviction, looking to slice her view of London with her Iranian heritage. The collection will sure to be of a reflective value as much as a fresh viewpoint on cultural diversity and the beauty of individuality. BIANCA SAUNDERS design approach is that of a delicacy that seems to almost float gently binding the form, through sheathes and swathes, swaddling the body, and revealing as much as it is concealing. Bianca aims to extract the charged meaning of masculinity and look at male nuances of femininity. These three designers join the current role-call of familiar names and even more recognisable collections: Liam Hodges and his saturated reportage style of design; PHOEBE ENGLISH and her delicately utilitarian nature; Kiko Kostadinov and his workwear homages; WALES BONNER and her elegant reign; Nicholas Daley and his cultural inceptions; A-COLD-WALL* s stoicism of the mundane and the proud expressions of societal youth. The people these designers create for are not the same that we have been seeing the past while on our catwalks and in our presentations - they are ne er cowboys nor petrolheads, peacocks or adventurers. They are wider than the parameters fashion can input they are considered commentators on society and its strange articulations. NEWGEN is a platform to build effective spokespeople for the future: the GEN part may not shout but its voice cuts through sharp when it does, we all stand up to listen. 17 30 Designer Introduction London Fashion Week Men s is once again upon us. For many, the menswear schedule is a welcome respite in an otherwise relentless calendar. Not for one second should that be read as slacking on ante on the contrary, LFWM delivers a packed schedule of world class shows, presentations and events. A hotbed of ideas and discovery, London has long been responsible for changing the mood of fashion its subcultures fizzing through the collections with all the frisson of its latest fêted club movement. This unique blurring of culture, of social codes and etiquette is unquestionably enviable. That said, its nothing new London has long been a product of its environment. An unforgiving city not without its hardships, it provides the backdrop from which many of our designers rebel and react. Rebellion is something London has always excelled at. Mary Quant, Vivienne Westwood, Katharine Hamnett, John Galliano, Alexander McQueen and Gareth Pugh are just a few of the brilliant homegrown rebels for whom fashion has served as the perfect vehicle to communicate ideas, concepts and social injustices sees London s creatives as impassioned as ever, with a new generation of designers affecting change with their innovative take on menswear notably with their progressive take on gender identity. London continues to pioneer shifts in attitudes - a progressive approach to casting has emerged at shows and presentations in recent years. Designers such as Charles Jeffrey LOVERBOY and ART SCHOOL are leading the charge championing the genderqueer movement through a celebration of subversive collections, diverse casting and importantly, a joyous sense of empowerment. While MAN has been instrumental in kick starting the career of many fledgling menswear designers, it is just one of many platforms at LFWM. NEWGEN continues its commitment to discovering and developing new designers through their celebrated mentoring scheme, and of course financial support. A newer addition to the schedule, the DiscoveryLAB, has been instrumental in the showcasing of new design talent. Located within the Designer Showrooms, the space allows new designers an opportunity to explore new ways of presenting their collection in a multi experiential pop-up space. This season boasts installations from CV22 - RUGBY - ENGLAND, 3.Paradis X PONY, JORDANLUCA, BIANCA SAUNDERS, Something While the nurturing of new talent is synonymous with London, LFWM is also home to a multitude of established designers from the sartorial finery of E. Tautz, Mr Start and Lou Dalton, to the street savvy innovations at Martine Rose, COTTWEILER and Liam Hodges. Joining the roster of esteemed talents this season is Italian luxury brand, ICEBERG. Under the Creative Direction of former MAN protégé, James Long, the ICEBERG brand has cemented its reputation as a leading name in contemporary menswear, and their LFWM debut is a truly fitting way to kick off this seasons proceedings. Subversion is a reoccurring theme at LFWM, with our homegrown talent turning convention on its head. The MAN initiative continues to unearth and nurture incredible new designers adding to their already illustrious alumni (Kim Jones, JW Anderson and Craig Green among them). This seasons recipients - ART SCHOOL, Rottingdean Bazaar and Stefan Cooke continue to cement the legacy of this fashion incubator. The MAN show has consistently provided a platform for exploration and innovation, and remains a highly anticipated show on To Hate On, DANSHAN, KA WA KEY, the LFWM schedule.
