4 PLAYING Maria Foerlev is the founder and owner of Etage Projects, a leading art and design gallery in Copenhagen. She has a keen eye for spotting new talent long before the rest of us, and is praised for her extensive knowledge of art and design. 50 WAYS TO SAY I LOVE YOU It s the gift that keeps on giving. My two children, Uma and Storm, made this beautiful box. They painted it and decorated it with pearls. Inside are 50 hand-written notes with reasons why they love me. Just think of how much time it must have taken them to make it. It s a gift that means the world to me. I m surrounded by generous people, both privately and professionally. People who believe in me unconditionally. Trust is such a great gift to receive because of the motivational energy that comes along with it. Every day, I m blessed to stand on the shoulders of so many great artists and designers. But the simple truth is that we all fare so much better when we let our guards down, and share the knowledge and the talents that we have. There are no shortcuts to finding the perfect gift. Thankfully. Everyone can buy what they already know they need, so your task is to come up with that one thing they probably wouldn t have found for themselves. 8 LIVING Natalia Sánchez Echevarria works as a designer, stylist and interior design consultant through her Copenhagen-based consultancy, Spatial Code. With a truly international and interdisciplinary background, she has developed a distinctive way of creating personal identity with emotional impact, for both private clients and international brands. IT S ALL ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE I ve worn this necklace every single day, since I got it. My children gave it to me last year, and this year they gave me another two pendants with their initials on, to go with the zodiac sign. It makes me feel like my children are always with me, no matter where I am in the world. I love surprises. For my 40th birthday, my sister put together this incredible surprise party for me. Just two months earlier I had been in a serious car accident, which meant a lot of rehabilitation and very little socialising, so having all my friends and family show up to celebrate me was the most thoughtful thing ever. Working on interior projects for private clients is much like trying to find the perfect gift for a friend. You need to know the people you are working with, spend time with them, visit their home. Then it s up to me to design that personalised solution they ve always dreamt of, but couldn t quite materialise on their own. Now that s true love. Perhaps the biggest act of generosity was my parents willingness to put aside their own ambitions, in order for me to pursue a career in opera and classical music even though it was so different from anything they d ever known. Now, every time I m on a stage, I m giving back in my own way. The more you put yourself into the music, the more your audience will get in touch with themselves and they in turn reward you for that experience. It s a constant exchange of emotional generosity. I love taking time to myself. To read, to take our five Great Danes on a long walk or just loose myself completely in beautiful recordings of the old masters. It s so important to give into these moments of contemplation. To use music, not as background noise, but as an emotional journey.
