The artwork on display is an outcome of workshops for families, transition year students and youth groups working with architects and artists on the theme of 'Living in the City' and is funded by The Arts Council and Dublin City Council Public Arts Office. Exhibition runs until 18th January Re-enactment: Irish Free State Army Foot Drills Drop in to see the history and battle re-enactment group Lord Edward's Own practice military drills from 1922, when the Irish Free State Army began to train recruits in Collins Barracks. You can see authentic uniforms and equipment, including Lee Enfield SMLE Rifles. Clarke Square, no booking Hands on History A chance to explore some of the artefacts from the Museum's collection of objects for handling with Museum educators - a fascinating drop-in handling session for all ages. 3 Decorative Arts & History Collins Barracks Benburb Street Dublin 7 February (continued) Wed 4th to Thu 30th April During Museum opening hours Sun 8th pm Sun 15th 3-4pm Thu 19th pm and pm Sat 21st 2-4pm Performance Workshop Historical Reenactment Pals - The Irish at Gallipoli As part of the Museum's WW1 centenary programme, award-winning innovators ANU Productions present an immersive World War I experience, based on the events surrounding the campaign at Gallipoli in Turkey and inspired by the previously untold stories of the 7th Battalion of the Royal Irish Fusiliers and the everyday lives of the Irish people who were affected by the Great War. The project is a partnership between ANU Productions, the National Museum of Ireland and the Department of Arts, Heritage and Gaeltacht and is supported by the National Archives of Ireland Performances will run Wednesday - Saturday: 11.00am, 12.00pm, 2.00pm, 3.00pm and 4.00pm Sunday pm, 3.00pm and 4.00pm. Hands on History A chance to explore some of the artefacts from the Museum's collection of objects for handling with Museum Educators - a fascinating drop-in handling session for all ages. No booking Mid-term workshops: Celebrating Chinese New Year It's the Chinese New Year and 2015 is the Year of the Sheep! Join Sorcha Nic Suibhne to explore the Museum, searching for sheep and other animals. Look out especially for animal-inspired objects from China in the 'Out of Storage' and 'Albert Bender' galleries before having a go at creating your own animal for Chinese New Year! Booking required, 2 euro contribution towards materials per child. Re-enactment: Napoleonic Wars "Regiment Irlanda", one of three Irish regiments in the Spanish Army during the Napoleonic Wars, will display foot and arms drill of 200 years ago, with reenactment group Lord Edward's Own. See how these Irish "Wild Geese" garbed in their distinctive blue uniforms, reacted to words of command in Spanish. There will also be allies and enemies about as British Redcoats and French Grenadiers demonstrate their own drills, weapons and uniforms. Come along to see re-enactors of the Irish regiments perform Napoleonic drill wearing their colourful red uniforms with drums beating. Meet the soldiers' camp followers to learn about the lives they led. 'Trove' Series: Ogham Stones: Context, Language, Dating and Function Ogham stones with inscriptions, mainly dating to between the 5th and 7th centuries AD, are found in a variety of contexts and many have been taken into museum collections over the last two hundred years. Fionnbarr Moore, Senior Archaeologist at the National Monuments Service will explain their function and significance against the backdrop of a country undergoing great social and political change in the years following the end of the Roman Empire.
