2 SITE MANAGER S ARTICLES FOR THE APRIL 2018 NEWSLETTER Site Meeting: Thursday, April 19 th, at 2:00 PM. Pest Control Services: On Monday, April 2nd, the following units will be inspected for preventative pest control: They are as follows: 303, 304, 205, 206, 105 You do not have to be present, if you don t want to be. A staff member will be escorting our exterminator during this time. Renters Insurance: It is very important that all apartment renters have a renter s insurance policy. It is a very inexpensive way to protect your personal belongings in case of an emergency. It can protect you against losses from fire, water leaks/ floods, theft, and other things. Some policies are only about $10 per month! If you do not have renters insurance, please look into it as soon as possible and get yourself protected and help to protect those around you. Office Closings: The Service Coordinator s office will be closed on Wednesday, April 18.

The four Core Values are below: 1. Openness to the Spirit 2. Community 3. Simplicity 4. Dignity and Respect for All We believe that our four core values flow from joyful service to all, especially with the needy and underserved. We, at Evergreen Management, believe and work towards these Core Values each and every day in everything we do for our Residents. We sincerely hope that you, as our Residents, have the same goal for all that make Linden House their home as well!

4 ANNUAL APARTMENT INSPECTIONS: HUD requires an annual inspection of all apartments take place ONCE PER YEAR. I ll be inspecting all resident apartments for housekeeping and checking for damages or items in need of attention. Your apartments should always be clean but do prepare your apartment for this inspection by deep cleaning. I will be checking the cleanliness of the kitchen sink, counter tops, stove, refrigerator, kitchen and bathroom floors, bathroom sink, toilet, tub/shower, and carpeting throughout the apartment. Also, we will be checking to be sure excessive clutter, storage boxes, and miscellaneous items are being stored to where all areas of the apartment are safe for each resident. All items must be in good working order such as, appliances, pull cords, etc. and no furniture may be blocking the windows or those pull cords. Pull cords must remain untied and laying along the carpet, in case of a fall. If you feel that you cannot clean your apartment as mentioned above, please enlist the help of your family or get someone to clean for you. You do not have to be present for your inspection, but if you could be present, that would be helpful in case you have any questions or concerns. You will be sent a separate notice well in advance of when we plan on scheduling these annual inspections.

Becca Kilmer will host one Thursday per month, in the Linden House library, from 4pm to 5pm. The class will be held this month on Thursday, April 5 th. You will need to provide your own crochet hook, size E or F, and yarn. The first project will be a scarf. It is recommended that you not use baby yarn. Expert crocheters also welcome.

On March 21, 2018 the United States House & Senate approved a bill which funds HUD at $4.7 billion above fiscal year This bill provides the most significant funding increase for the Older Americans Act and other aging programs since The Section 202 Service Coordinator program was funded $15million above fiscal year (That s me!) The Section 202 Supportive Housing Program for the Elderly received $678 million, up from $502 million in (That s Linden House!) Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ foundress to be canonized a saint. On March 7, 2018 the Vatican announced that Blessed Mary Catherine Kasper has been approved to be canonized a saint in the Roman Catholic Church. This certainly adds to the joy of the sisters who are this year celebrating 150 years of Poor Handmaid presence in the United States. Again, we send our congratulations. If you are interested in learning more about the canonization process, you are invited to attend a presentation at the Center at Donaldson entitled Canonization Process of Blessed Catherine Kasper. This event will take place on Saturday, April 21 from 1:00 4:00pm. The Service Coordinator also has an article on the process. 20 th Anniversary Luncheon to take place at Morris Park Country Club. All residents are invited to attend a luncheon celebrating the 20 th anniversary of The Linden House of Mishawaka. We will celebrate on Friday, June 22 beginning at noon. We will enjoy a lovely meal overlooking the golf course and live music. Please mark your calendar!

The reasons for hair loss vary. It can be caused by childbirth or other stressful events. Heredity, thyroid levels and even frequent use of a flat iron can also be to blame. Since hair loss is less socially acceptable for women than it is for men, it can take a toll on a woman s emotional well-being and level of confidence, experts say. Even so, loss of hair can be unsettling for both sexes. But the good news is that not all hair loss is permanent. By increasing your intake of foods rich in certain nutrients, you may be able to strengthen your strands. Here are five good-for-your-hair foods that you might want to add to your diet. Carrots Carrots are rich in beta-carotene, which, in the body, gets converted into vitamin A. Vitamin A not only helps preserve good vision and boosts your immune system, it s also good for your hair and skin. In addition, carrots contain biotin, which helps promote hair growth. Other good sources of beta-carotene are sweet potatoes, spinach and kale. Salmon Although more research is needed, some studies in years past have pointed to a connection between a vitamin D deficiency and hair loss. Why? Because vitamin D appears to aid in the stimulation and

Omega-3s lubricate the scalp and reduce the dryness that can lead to hair breakage. If you choose to take a vitamin D supplement, though, be sure to check with your doctor first, as excessive intake can cause nausea, constipation and other side effects. Eggs Eggs not only have protein and iron, but also biotin, which helps control hair loss by improving the infrastructure of keratin which is what hair is made from. (Many people even take biotin in supplement form in order to try and stimulate hair growth.) Furthermore, the folate in eggs also acts as a hair booster. Keep in mind, though, that it s the yolk that s key not the egg white. Avocados Avocados are rich in the monounsaturated kind of healthy fat that can help keep your hair soft and shiny. They also are high in vitamins B12 and E, which may improve the quality of your hair strands. Avocados may also help spark the production of collagen and elastin if applied topically to your hair and scalp, usually as part of a conditioner. Oysters Oysters contain more of the mineral zinc per serving than any other food, according to the National Institutes of Health. And zinc helps spur hair growth so much so that people with a zinc deficiency may suffer from hair loss or slow growth. Important to note: A zinc deficiency can be caused by deficiencies of vitamin A.
