2 HERBAL CREAM AND LOTION COMPOSITIONS AND METHODS OF PREPARATION THEREOF Field of the Invention This invention in general relates to a herbal body cream and lotion composition and methods of preparation thereof. In particular, the present invention provides a herbal cream or lotion composition comprising extracts of organically excipients, wherein the extract is prepared employing a super critical fluid extraction or water extraction. Background of the Invention Body cream and lotions generally contain ingredients like liquid paraffin that is petroleum based, and ethoxylated emulsifiers that are made using ethylene oxide and extract of herbs in case of herbal products that are grown by regular methods using pesticides and using harsh preservatives. The use of ethoxylated emulsifiers, however, is seen more and more as a disadvantage. Now-a-days consumers increasingly prefer natural ingredients in cosmetics, which are free from chemical and other impurities and are safe to use. It is therefore an important aspect to develop a herbal cream and lotion composition that is made of natural ingredients to provide better moisturising effect and is safe to use. Related Art US Patent no by Bindra et al. discloses a herbal cream composition. The composition comprising natural wax as an emulsifier, extract of Curcuma and the gum of Acacia or Colohonium or shorea. This is combined with essential oil and petroleum jelly. US Patent no by Friedman et al. discloses a topically applicable oil in glycerine composition. The composition comprising vegetable oil, essential oil and emulsifier. The emulsifier is of vegetable origin. The composition is alcohol free. US patent no B1 by Farooqi discloses a herbal skin care composition comprising of bees wax, stearic acid, glycerol mbnostearate, olive oil, aloe gel, glycerine, triethanolamine, parabens, propylene glycol, essential oils, sandal wood oil, and rose water. The process for the preparation of composition is also disclosed.

Example- 18 A clinical study to evaluate the moisturizing efficacy of Nourishing Face Lotion on healthy human Volunteers A study was conducted to evaluate moisturizing effect of Nourishing Face Lotion and after-application feel in 10 healthy human subjects (5 male and 5 female) were enrolled into the study based on the inclusion criteria as per protocol; the investigational product was applied on the left and right forearms. A total of 15 and 10 sites were evaluated for treated and untreated, respectively. Moisturizing effect of treated and untreated site was evaluated using Corneometer 825. In addition after application feel was evaluated by self assessment by individual subject using 5 point scale (1= Poor; 2= Average; 3= Good; 4=Very Good; 5=Excellent). All the evaluations were done on a linear analogue scale. All the values are expressed as Mean ± SD. Statistical analysis was performed using repeated measures of ANOVA followed by Dunnett's multiple comparison test. After application feel was evaluated using Friedman test followed by Dunnett's multiple comparison test. The minimum level of significance was fixed at 95% confidence limit. Analysis was performed using GraphPad Prism version 4.03 for Windows, GraphPad Software, San Diego California USA, Table 1: Moisturizing Efficacy of Nourishing Face Lotion as Evaluated by Corneometer Readings.

The outcome of the study showed a significant moisturizing effect as evaluated by Corneometer reading in the Nourishing Face Lotion treated group after application. There was also an increasing trend in the Corneometer reading at 2, 4, 6, and 8 h post application as compared to the baseline values but was not significant. No significant effect was observed in the untreated group as compared to the base line values at any of the time points (Table 1). Evaluation of after feel application by individual subject self assessment revealed a significant improvement in all the parameters namely softness, smoothness, overall appearance and moisturization. All these self assessment parameters were not statistically significant in the untreated group except for significance for smoothness at 2 h post application. (Table 2). None of the subjects reported of adverse events in this study. The observations clearly support the Efficacy and safety of Nourishing Face Lotion as evaluated by various parameters in this study.
