1 Shining STARS The year s most memorable and mesmerizing hair and makeup looks have a bit of daring and a lot of sex appeal. By Hannah Morrill Eyes These eyes are the prize: Smoldering shadows and thick, dramatic lashes. MUTED PLUM Mila Kunis Avoiding ubiquitous gray tones, Kunis s makeup artist, Tracey Levy, mixed two more unexpected colors: eggplant and chocolate. Blended together, the shades look almost like gunmetal, but with a depth and warmth that contrasts perfectly with hazel eyes, she says. CRANBERRY SHADOW Taylor Swift Makeup artist Lorrie Turk used a berry shadow to showcase Swift s bluegreen eyes. I faded the shadow past her crease, then smudged it below her bottom lashes with a Q-tip, says Turk. (Blending well, then defining with black liner, keeps reddish tones from looking sickly.) Makeup artist Toni G. placed long faux lashes at the outer corners of Jolie s eyes, adding shorter clusters as she worked inward. Trim falsies before you place them, or look for a set with varied lengths, like M.A.C. 30 Lash. WINGED LINER Zoë Saldana Makeup artist Vera Steimberg created structured cat eyes for Saldana with a thick streak of black gel liner extended up past the outer corners. (If that seems a bit tricky, a liquid-liner pen is easier to apply, she says.) She then swept black, navy, and chocolate shadows up to the crease of the lid but no farther. 2 REX/REX USA; DAVID COOK (STILL LIFES) CLASSIC SMOKY EYES Keira Knightley Smoky eyes are as common on the red carpet as borrowed diamonds. What makes Knightley s look so special is the way it blends three shades for a sooty effect taupe, steel, and espresso. To open up the eyes, makeup artist Zoë Taylor dabbed pearly cream shadow on the inner corners, then lined the eyes with black pencil. She finished with tons of black mascara and no fake lashes. Unbelievably, they re all hers, she says. From top: M.A.C. 3 Tip ALLOVER COLOR Karlie Kloss It s a very sexy look, but with Karlie s freshness, it stays cool, says Kloss s makeup artist, Jeanine Lobell. I love the mix of gold and purple shadows with the fuchsia lips. The gold helps airbrush bold colors. The finish becomes more sheer, and the natural lips peek through, she says. At first, Camilla was worried this chestnut shade was too severe, says makeup artist Hung Vanngo. A dab of wine-colored gloss on the center of the bottom lip toned things down, along with glow-y skin (courtesy of CK One 3-in-1 Face Makeup in Tan plus CK One Skin Illuminator in Warm). It felt sophisticated, not scary or goth, he says. A nude mouth on the red carpet can make you look like you forgot your lipstick. That s why Lobell picked a warm, muted pink instead of beige. Priming the lips with foundation mellows the rosiness of the shade and helps it last, she says. DIVA RED Adele I mixed two of my favorite reds Chanel lipstick in La Fascinante and Illamasqua lipstick in Sangers to give Adele a custom shade, says makeup artist Michael Ashton of the singer s Grammy look. He worked outward from the center using a firm brush, blotted with a tissue, then traced just inside her lip line with a ruby pencil. Because it s drier than lipstick, liner acts as a bumper to keep color in place, he says. She didn t even need a touch-up. BRIGHT ORANGE Emmy Rossum This is a really easy way to pull off bright statement lips and have fun with makeup, says Rossum s makeup artist, Amy Nadine. To intensify the shade, Nadine lined the lips with an equally bright pencil before filling in with Tropicana orange lipstick. HALF-UP Kate Beckinsale I wanted Kate s hair to look really soft and 70s, says hairstylist Adir Abergel. After rough-drying, he set her entire head in large hot curlers. For that real Barbarella volume, brush the hair straight forward over the face before rolling it up, he says. BRAIDED BUN Charlize Theron I wanted Charlize s hair to look intriguing from every angle, says hairstylist Enzo Angileri. Before blow-drying, he worked in a few drops of oil for shine. He parted the hair on the side, then French-braided it across the back of the head, beginning just above the ear. I started tight but got looser as I went, he says. He twisted the plait into a low, offcenter bun and secured it with hairpins. MODERN BOUFFANT Julianne Hough Updos can be so formal, says Hough s hairstylist, Carlos Ferraz. This one is playful. To give Hough s hair texture a boost and create a matte finish, he used thickening spray and dry shampoo at the roots before gently teasing the top, sides, and back of the hair with a comb. A thin headband provides just enough control. FISHTAIL BRAID Blake Lively A skinny braid is not appealing, says hairstylist Serge Normant, who created this thick, swingy one for Lively. He gathered her day-old hair and put it into a high, tight ponytail that he teased with a comb before braiding. LUSH WAVES Salma Hayek Curling all of Hayek s hair with a three-quarter-inch iron was how hairstylist Robert Vetica started this look but it wasn t the most important step. Once the spirals cooled, I brushed and brushed through them with a paddle brush, he says. The waves became soft and touchable.
