3 Welcome to the St Albans Community Centre () and the Here at we are delighted to bring together an exciting performance space and a vibrant community centre - all under the one roof. We re thrilled to start 2018 with an exciting line-up of quality performances, exhibitions and activities. The will host an array of quality performances including, cabaret, cultural performances and theatre for young and old. In an exciting first, we will hold In Conversations with Indigenous artists. At, you can get involved in youth events, toddler craft, concert bands and more we have activities for people of all ages and backgrounds. 4 SEE IT Shows and events to enjoy February - June 2018 FEBRUARY The Glitter and Doom Salon Photo credit: Gee Greenslade Photo credit: Hong-Anh Nguyen The Glitter and Doom Salon Friday 2 February, 7.30pm $38 full, $26 concession, $20 students & groups of 6 Performance Featuring the fabulous Paul Capsis. Presented as part of Midsumma Festival, this live performance is equal parts glamorous cabaret salon and debauched dive bar. A star of the 2016 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the Salon features Australia s most enigmatic cabaret stars and vibrant vaudeville artists, with performances of Tom Waits classics by Jennifer Kingwell. Warning: Strong adult content Hong-Anh Nguyen Live in Concert Friday 23 February, 7.30pm $10 Music Join us for a Vietnamese Lunar New Year celebration, with one of Melbourne s most popular Vietnamese singer-songwriters. Performing in Vietnamese and English, Hong- Anh, accompanied by Binh Cadillac, Duong Hoa and Duy Thien, will sing songs of nostalgia, the human plight and the love songs of a former refugee on his journey to freedom through music. Pit Paintings: Matthew Simpson Monday 22 January - Sunday 4 March Gallery All Exhibition Matthew s abstract paintings create form, pattern and structure through repetition lines. The technique involves both random and considered mark-making to gradually build a colour field of emerging forms. 2
5 MARCH First Fridays in the Bowery - First Dance! Friday 2 March, 5-7pm Youth Dance Brimbank is a hub of dance groups, battles and performances! The First Dance! event will be a celebratory showcase of youth talent from diverse creative and cultural backgrounds in Brimbank. HART Wednesday 14 March, 7.30pm $38 full, $26 concession, $20 students & groups of 6 New Canvases - Youth Exhibition Friday 9 March-Sunday 22 April Gallery All Exhibition This exciting exhibition features a new collection of works by a local emerging young artist. Support your local artists, come along to see New Canvases! Theatre School bookings available HART is a solo theatre piece by Melbourne Fringe and Adelaide Fringe award-winner and Noongar man, Ian Michael. Weaving together the real stories of four survivors of the Stolen Generations, Michael invites you to listen in on the silenced stories of his country. A brave and quietly devastating performance. Cameron Woodhead, The Age. HART is a VCAA selected play. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are advised that this production contains references to and images of people who are deceased. 6 MARCH Intercultural Sports and Dance Day Saturday 24 March, pm Errington Oval Everyone welcome Join in the multicultural celebration with activities from across the world including traditional games, wrestling, kick ball, dancing and drumming. Ajak Kwai and Friends Friday 23 March, 7.30pm $10 full, $5 concession Music Ajak s soulful and funky afro-beats represent the depth and richness of her South Sudanese roots. Singing in Dinka, Arabic and English, her performances have mesmerized audiences nationally and internationally. This performance will feature her songs from the hit SBS TV series, Sunshine. Katawan at Gunita: Jennifer Ferguson Tuesday 27 March-Sunday 10 June Gallery All Exhibition Jennifer Arllen Ferguson s practice focuses on the diasporic body and notions of belonging and unbelonging. The Katawan at Gunita series of performances explores the inseparable link between body and trauma. APRIL All My Love Saturday 21 April, 7.30pm $38 full, $26 concession, $20 students and groups of 6 Theatre Photo credit: Ann Nguyen Still revered across Australia, Henry Lawson is one of the nation s favourite writers and poets. His contemporary, Mary Gilmore, was a literary icon and radical socialist. This wonderful play tells the surprising and heartbreaking love story of two of Australia s most significant writers. Block Party Saturday 14 April, 1-4pm car park Youth Music As part of National Youth Week we will host the Block Party. The event will feature local musical acts, dancers and DJs, hair braiding, a barber station and a free BBQ! Come and celebrate all the creative talent in Brimbank and enjoy a fun day out! The Festival of Traditional Vietnamese Music and Dance Saturday 14 April, 7pm $15 Performance The, Australian Vietnamese Arts, and the Centre for Studies of Vietnamese Traditional Music Australia present a showcase of traditional music and dance. Don t miss this unique collaboration between artists from Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne celebrating the classical cultural traditions of Vietnam. 4
7 MAY Caliban Friday 18 May, 11am $38 full, $26 concession, $20 students and groups of 6 Theatre School bookings available Created by Western Edge Youth Arts, Caliban explores the battle ground of global climate politics. Set in the near future it follows the story of what happens to Shakespeare s character Caliban, from The Tempest, after the waters rise and his island is flooded. Caliban is a VCAA selected play. Drawing on writer Katie Beckett s personal memories of growing up with her single Aboriginal father, Which Way Home is a road trip comedy 80,000 years in the making. Soliloquy - Australian Landscape: Julie-anne Armstrong-Roper 15 June-29 July Gallery All Exhibition Soliloquy - a series of contemplative works, rich in colour with a luminous quality that captures the elemental forces of land and sky and their dramatic but transient meteorological moods. Dinosaur Time Machine Saturday 7 July, 1pm $10 adult, $5 child, free for children under 2 Performance Families This winter school holidays, buckle up and take a trip in a giant time machine to get up close and personal with a life sized T-Rex. 11 RESIDENCY OPPORTUNITIES Be BOLD Residencies February onwards and The Artists We are launching a new artist development program which provides four residency opportunities at and the Bowery Theatre. The program provides a creative space for professional and creative development and presentation of new, bold work. Company In Residence Youth As a company in residence, you will receive space in-kind for a year, with opportunities to participate in various and BOWERY programs throughout the year. Youth Creative Residency Expressions of Interest open 2 April-1 May Youth Are you an emerging collective between the ages of years and based in Brimbank? Are you looking for new networks, to develop and present your creative practice to new audiences? If you answered yes then the Youth Creative Residency may be for you. Room To Move Residency Artists This residency offers the dance studio to a single choreographer or small group of dancers in-kind for training, creative development time and/or rehearsals for up to six months without the pressure of a public outcome. BOWERY EDUCATION PROGRAM The invites secondary schools to attend shows within the program. Special schools offers are indicated within the pricing line of each event listing. Look out for our performances listed as part of the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) playlist, we hope to see you soon!
