2 Our Scholarship Recipients Ghazal Rahimi with her artwork Vicente Perez III Alejandro Perez Forouzan Safari with her artwork above: The art of Vicente Perez III (2 left) & Alejandro Perez (right) The art of Yasamin Safarzadeh Yasamin Safarzadeh Ghazal Rahimi Brenda S Bagg Memorial award recipient Interviewed by Lynne Schroeder Ghazal is from Iran, and her family is still there. The painting she brought to the luncheon is one of a series depicting the culture and pressures of Middle East and Iranian culture. She painted the woman's face on the bottom of the canvas and on its side to show the pressure weighted down on her from the various patterns. The paint is thicker at the bottom as well. The patterns are from Iranian and Arabic culture. Her art hero is Aizin Ashlou. Her goal as an artist is to represent the pressure on women and the role that men have in Iranian culture. She has drawn since childhood. She always wanted to be an artist. She feels the importance of researching the backgrounds of history and of having good drawing skills. She wants to stay in the US but also wants to show her work in Iran. Vicente Perez III and Alejandro Perez Lynn Babior Memorial award recipients Interviewed by Arlene Weinstock Vicente Perez III and Alejandro Perez are twin brothers who are artists. They work collaboratively on projects and sometimes paint on the same canvases. They were born and raised in South Gate and have been drawing all their lives. In their senior year of high school they became serious about art. At Otis, they learned to draw and worked in different media and now as they prepare to graduate, they see themselves as painters working with acrylics. They are inspired by artists Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, and Jonas Wood. Alejandro says they are interested in Pop Art. The footwear series is about all the different cultures and styles in Los Angeles. In youth culture, shoes reflect class issues. They are interested in the diversity of the greater Los Angeles region. They photograph friends, relatives and themselves for source images. These figurative paintings are done as value studies - black, white and gray. They also work in color when they paint abstracts. The brothers are planning on getting studio space after they graduate from Otis so they can continue to create together. WPW Newsletter June 2016 Forouzan Safari WPW award recipient Interviewed by Lynne Schroeder Forouzan Safari is from Iran, and her family is here in the US. Her work is all about color. When she came to the United States she noticed all of the color in peoples dress and in her surroundings. She decided to do a large painting of her friend Sajad because his clothing is so colorful and different. She also wanted to make sure that her painting had some sense of humor. She likes funny things. Her artist heroes are Egon Schiele, Alice Neel, and Alex Katz. Forouzan wants to finish her master s degree and then teach as well as show her work. She would like to study at a New York art school after leaving Otis. Yasamin Safarzadeh WPW award recipient Interviewed by Mila Benedicto When first meeting Yasamin Safarzadeh, one is immediately impressed by her charisma, insightfulness, and passion. Persian-American in background, most of her family was killed by the Iranian government during the revolution. No doubt this history informs her opinion that the greatest artists "have to have a social political voice" and that all the great artists were antagonized for their art and mentality, citing Courbet and James Joyce among many others. But she looks to the future with excitement and sees today as a great time for women artists, especially of color, to believe in the statements they're making. This socially conscious young woman looks forward to continuing her work with non-profits helping city schools with their art programs and planting urban gardens. She talks with passion of her artist hero, Neo Rauch, as someone who brings life back to oil painting. She shared with us a thirteen-foot piece on raw canvas that is one of a series ideally viewed together as if looking up at stained glass in a cathedral. She describes this work as a "fractal documentation, an "exercise in staining, and "taking natural pattern fractals and having them answer the questions about art." She explains that as she stains her canvases, she thinks of the artists who came before her with hopes of joining their ranks. We will surely be hearing much of this intelligent, passionate young artist as her career progresses. 2
