1 Call to Artists Fourth Annual Temporary Exhibit Issued by Public Art Commission City of Blue Springs, Missouri September 19, 2008 EXHIBITION OVERVIEW The City of Blue Springs established the Public Art Commission in This is our fourth year of offering a temporary exhibition of art, which will be entitled Serendipity. The exhibit will open on April and run thru September of This year s exhibit will be located on the grounds of St. Mary s Medical Center in Blue Springs. The Public Art Commission has selected this site since medical care and hospitals often times have significant importance in the community and a relationship to the arts. We will use the public access areas in and around the building, and perhaps one piece in the interior entry. Four artists will be selected to provide a work of art for a six-month temporary exhibit. The artwork should be unique and original, not a copy or limited edition. The Blue Springs Public Art Commission is NOT SEEKING PROPOSALS. This Call is seeking artists wishing to be considered by the Selection Panel for this exhibit. Artists may submit illustrations or photographs of pre-existing artworks for consideration along with their qualifications, as long as they are original and unique. Artists who have a conceptual idea may submit drawings or images of proposed artwork. Location: Blue Springs, Missouri. Four locations in or on the grounds of St. Mary s Medical Center, located at 201 West R.D. Mize Road, Blue Springs, MO This is our local hospital campus with medical offices, emergency center, and birthing center with several options for locating art in both interior and exterior locations. It is sited on a major street near the center of the community. Between patients, staff, and public using the facility the art will have several thousand exposures during the six months of the exhibit. Eligibility: This Call to Artists is open to all professional artists over the age of eighteen (18). Emerging and professional artists are encouraged to apply. Artists working in a wide variety of media and forms will be considered. Such media include, but are not limited to bronze, stone, textiles, paint, wood, metal, and still and video photography. Theme: It is suggested that the artwork relate to the definition of Serendipity or how it relates to the community of Blue Springs, or the medical field. 903 W. 2 Exhibit Dates: Six (6) months April 1 st to September 30 th, 2009 Installation Date: Between March 15 th & April 1st, 2009, as arranged and coordinated thru PAC. Due date of application: October 31 st, 2008 Compensation: Each artist will receive an honorarium of $2, for the six-month exhibition. A small travel allowance may be provided depending on budget and travel requirements of Artists. Artists will be responsible for transporting, installing, and removing their artwork. Most installation cost regarding site prep and some equipment cost, depending on the requirements, will not be the responsibility of the Artist. Artists will be invited to attend a dedication event for the exhibit during the month of June, Each artist will be interviewed and videotaped for use by the Art Commission in promotion of the Serendipity exhibition. Selection Process: An Artist Selection Panel composed of artists, art administrators, and community residents, will be convened to review all submissions meeting the application requirements and deadline. Artists will be selected on the basis of submission materials evidencing artistic quality of past work and experiences. The selected artists must enter into an agreement, which is subject to the approval of the City Council. The artwork should be durable and require no maintenance during the six-month exhibit. During this period in western Missouri, heavy rains, high heat and humidity, or high winds could be experienced, so consideration should be given to resistance to the effects of weather. Attention to public safety issues and resistance to vandalism will also be important. Approval of artwork will be contingent on satisfactorily addressing liability issues, such as limiting the height of a work that could be climbed upon, limiting the depth of a work which could be stepped into, and assuring structural integrity. The four selected artists will be required to provide an illustration or photograph of a pre-existing or proposed artwork to the Public Art Commission and City staff. The artists will cooperate with this group to choose a specific site at St. Mary s Hospital for exhibition of the artwork. Site selection and artwork approval will be done using phone, , fax or in person. The specific artwork and exact site within the site of St. Mary s Medical Center must be approved by the Public Art Commission, Director of Parks & Recreation and a representative of St. Mary s Medical Center. Artworks that are offensive or politically motivated, or those which do not meet community standards of decency, will not be approved. Artists will be responsible for transporting, installing, and removing the artworks. The method and materials used for installation must be approved by the Director of Parks & Recreation, and representatives of St. Mary s Medical Center. During the period of installation, the Serendipity exhibition will be promoted in local and regional publications and will be part of the City of Blue Springs web site, with photographs and a map of the location of each of the artworks. After the close of the exhibit, the artwork becomes the property of the artist. Artists will have the opportunity to offer their work for sale, and the City reserves the first right of refusal for purchase. The Public Art Commission will encourage the purchase of the art if offered for sale. Several art works have been purchased from previous exhibitions.

3 Application Requirements: Interested artists should submit the following to be considered for this project: (1) Letter of Interest - Please explain why you want to be considered for this exhibit, and whether you have a preference as to a specific location at St. Mary s Medical Center (interior or exterior). The Public Art Commission reserves the right to make a final determination of the artist's assignment to a particular site. (2) Current resume - Include information and details about educational background, previous work, gallery showings, and past experience in public art or temporary exhibits. (3) A maximum of 12 images of previous work, submitted as slides or digital images as follows: Slides: Slides must be presented in a 9" by 11" plastic slide sheet. Each slide must be labeled with artist's name, numbered according to annotated Image Identification Sheet, and marked with indication of top and front. Digital images: Images should be sent either (1) on a PC-compatible CD-ROM in.jpg file format or (2) via in.jpg file format, or (3) in a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation in.jpg format. Label the CD with artist's name. Each file should be labeled with the artist's name and image number to correspond with the Image Identification Sheet. Images should be at least 300 dpi, with a maximum image size of 600 X 800 pixels. If the images are in a PowerPoint presentation, the information required on the Image Identification Sheet may be included in the PowerPoint presentation in lieu of submitting a printed Image Identification Sheet. (4) A Slide or Digital Image Identification Sheet that lists: The title of the work The date it was completed The dimensions of the work What materials were used (5) A self-addressed, stamped envelope with postage sufficient for the return of your materials if return is requested. After submitting application materials by mail or electronically, it is suggested that artist applicants call to verify that their application materials have been received. This is an available location. About 50% of all traffic enters one of these two entries.

This corner is on the two major streets that serve the hospital campus. It is more open and visible than it appears, but there are distractions with the trees and signs.

This entrance sees about 50% of all traffic at the hospital.
