The festival is designed to engage and educate the senses, stimulate the imagination, fuse culture and interpretation all within the incomparable context of the islands. In its inaugural year, the Festival is a partnership between the Council of the Isles of Scilly and the local community of artists, galleries, community organisations and craftspeople presenting the best, exciting and most intriguing elements that local Arts have to offer. The timetable of events and exhibitions is tailored around a wide range of demonstrations, displays, exhibitions, events, talks, walks and workshops bringing a greater understanding and appreciation of the talent on the islands. The event will be a tool for making art not only consumable but most importantly accessible: leading to the expression of ideas, creativity, fostering new talent, personal development, and greater understanding of the Islands, Island history, and the unique environment of the Isles of Scilly. ArtScilly 2010 draws on the strengths of the Islands Arts sector, its quality and originality, to offer a high quality, unique experience to new and existing visitors as well as the local population SPRING SUMMER AUTUMN WINTER

3 Art Guide Information Saturday, May 8th Arts & Culture on the Isles of Scilly The Isles of Scilly have developed a character all of their own, with its own history, heritage, and traditions... scratch the surface and you will discover a proud heritage and traditional culture. Scilly has bred vigorous, successful people throughout history from sea-going pilots to master mariners, flower growers to shipbuilders. Islanders are by definition resourceful and independent-minded people and Scillonians are no exception; therefore it will come as no surprise to find that over a third of the working population on Scilly is self-employed. Many work in the traditional industries of fishing and flower-farming, growing scented narcissi and daffodils. Farms here resemble the kind of smallholding that still flourished on mainland England at the end of the 19th century, with small fields and high hedges. Fishermen catch a range of gastronomic delights, including lobster, crab, turbot and monkfish; some is served locally but much is exported to the UK and to Europe. Tourism also now supports many local business people, with enterprises ranging from craft workshops to inter-island boating.
