SMC style SPRING SUM MER 2011 TRENDS BY HARRIET STEWART, JUNIOR FASHION EDITOR AT the SUNDAY TIMES STYLE Grown-up neon Neon has been given an injection of grown-up glamour this season, thanks to Christopher Kane and his SS11 collection of fluoro frocks. One of London Fashion Week s hottest tickets, his SS11 collection, dubbed grannies on acid, took the classic twin-set silhouette and subverted it with a high-voltage colour shock. Forget previous connotations of grubby Hoxton teenagers in the midst of nu-rave, the new grown-up neon is all about sophistication. A flash of fluoro here, a pop of neon there. The key to this trend is to pick refined pieces in simple, grown-up shapes and fabrics. Colour block SUPER SEVENTIES If you haven t yet heard that 70s is big news for spring then listen up. One of the new season s biggest trends, it was all over the catwalks, including Etro, Pucci and Marc Jacobs, in the form of palazzo pants, jumpsuits, faded denim flares and wide straw hats. Whether you re channelling the minimalist mood of 1970s Yves Saint Laurent, floating around in Woodstock inspired floral and denims or putting it out there in a Studio 54 style sequin jumpsuit, there are many strings to this sartorial bow. For an instant style solution just add a pair of chunky wooden wedges and a fedora hat to last season s button-up denim skirt for a touch of seventies, minus the expensive wardrobe re-vamp. Smart sportswear Chic, sleek and minimal. These are your three key words when tackling this ultra-modern trend. To elevate your look from running track to runway focus on the details, this is not a look to wear head-to-toe. Jonathan Saunders put a glamorous spin on the trend with subtle mesh panels and clean silhouettes, while Marni took a more literal approach with layers of high-tech fabrics and scuba-style hats. For a less aquatic take on the trend, go for pieces with chunky exposed zips or rubber trims and pair with silky racer-back vests. Alternatively, a wedge trainer or a sheer tee worn over a sporty crop-top will nod to the trend without leaving you looking like you re on your way to circuit training. Of all the designers who showed colour block for spring and there were many Raf Simmons at Jil Sander came out on top. Pink trousers, orange skirts, green jackets, purple dresses - they came down the catwalk thick and fast, layered one on top of another. A kaleidoscope of colour, this collection breaks all the rules of the colour-wheel and shouldn t work. But it does, and oh-so well. For an easy take on the trend, pair your brights with black or neutrals and stick to simple shapes. A pair of coloured chinos with a crisp white tee is an effortlessly effective way to tackle this tricky trend, or take your cue from Isabel Marant and go for a sporty-chic grey marl sweatshirt. For the fashion fearless, wear clashing blocks of colour and march your way boldly into spring.

What is your best tip for stress free dressing everyday? On a day when you are feeling good and particularly inspired about your wardrobe, put together three or four complete outfits with accessories that you are happy with (they can be pretty similar if necessary) and take a quick snap of yourself wearing them in the mirror. Then on those mornings when you struggle to know what to wear, or can t work out what usually goes with what, refer back to them as a guide. It really does help! What should I wear to a summer wedding? This summer bright block colours are everywhere and extremely fashionable. They look fresh, modern and positive, and perfect for a summer wedding. Team a simple boldly coloured dress with shoes and a hat in opposing colours for a confident look that would work just as well at Kate Moss s as Kate Middleton's nuptials! How can I pack a capsule wardrobe for my holiday? Deciding what to pack can be tricky, particularly if you need to dress for a different season. The key is to find one or two trans-seasonal items that you feel comfortable and confident wearing (for example a pair of flattering trousers and a sheer blouse) then build around those items. Take time to plan a few other pieces that work well together with those items (for example a few vests, shorts, swimwear, perhaps a dress for a summer holiday) and you have created your capsule holiday wardrobe! This way of packing gives you a huge number of outfit options while leaving plenty of space in your suitcase for your holiday shopping. How can I update my current wardrobe without blowing my budget? Simple neutral styles have been very popular for the last year and with just a few tweaks can be updated. Investing in midi length skirt or swapping your skinny jeans for a pair of high waisted flares will instantly freshen up your look. Alternatively, focus on accessories, loading up colourful bracelets and a pair of bold wedges for a clean modern look. 15 13. CREATE A CONTEMPORARY TABLE ARRANGEMENT Start with a black glass container. Soak florist s oasis and cut to size, approximately 2cm taller than container. Select appropriate foliage, in this case a large Monstera leaf with a selection of berried Ivy. Working horizontally, place your foliage according to your choice of design, ensuring there is enough space for each piece. We have an Anthurium placed on top of the Monstera leaf. Next place three Agapanthus to enhance the green and give contrast. Select roses and group in a threesome off to one side to balance the Agapanthus. Choose a smaller filler, in this case we have used Hypericum to balance the roses. We have chosen a very structural plant material, such as Aloe Vera, to give variety and length, cut these to size and add horizontally. To add a finer line and movement we have added a few pieces of Flexi-grass to give a finishing touch. Make sure you have covered all of your oasis. Fill any spaces with more berried Ivy leaves. Your arrangement is finished and ready to place. St Martin's Courtyard is home to The Covent Garden Academy of Flowers, bringing back heady memories of the area s illustrious floral past. Covent Garden was the celebrated British flower market and location of arguably one of the most famous film scenes, with Audrey Hepburn as Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady. The Covent Garden Academy of Flowers has a range of courses to suit everyone, from beginners to professionals. Peter Nunn of relax, a day spa specialising in massage and natural beauty, believes in a very personal approach to relaxation... relax 7 Mercer Street

19 17. For me it s sitting on the top deck of a number 38 bus from Victoria to Piccadilly. Or thinking of my 6 year old son Raf pulling a funny face - or my 82 year old dad for that matter. Whatever it is that makes you smile, chances are you re relaxing at the same time. The challenge of course for lots of people - me included, is that relaxing in the traditional sense of doing nothing, isn t easy. I get involved in a ton of stuff which I love. But - and I can hear her voice as I write this, my lovely lady Thaisa (she s British with a funny name) constantly reminds me about needing to get the work life balance right. I know she s right, but there s something just a tincy wincy bit unrelaxing about being told to relax! There are zillions of books on how to relax - but somehow, we never quite get round to reading them. I actually asked all of my team - and Thaisa - what tips they would give to relax. Only one of them came back to me! A long hot soak in the bath said Kelly who runs Relax BBC. Too busy to respond, the rest said! So here s my recipe for relaxing this summer. Do whatever it is you enjoy. Go for a run, hop, skip or jump on a Sunday afternoon. Eat a whole bar of chocolate. Sing that X-Factor audition in the shower. Or go shopping. (Just remember it s not how much it costs, it how much you saved by buying it in the sales!). Whatever it is that flicks your switch, do it. But do it in a wholesome present way. Do it without a care in the world. Do because it makes you feel good. Most of all do it for you. Relaxing is a gift that we can all have. True relaxation is about you being you. Let yourself go. 22 20. SMC food REstaurant Bill's Mixed Berry Pavlova Delivering a dash of fancy to your table, spring is the time for a delicious Mixed Berry Pavlova, served with the best fresh seasonal produce. Enjoy as part of an indulgent afternoon tea - with a glass of Bill's Hedgerow Fizz. Bill's 13 Slingsby Place

23 Mixed berry pavlova with a berry coulis For the meringue base 3 large egg whites 175g caster sugar 2 tsp cornflour 2 level tsp white wine vinegar 2 tsp vanilla extract - For the topping 200g white chocolate 400ml double cream 2 tsp vanilla extract 500g mixed berries - For the coulis 250g mixed berries 1 tbsp caster sugar - To decorate a few sprigs of fresh mint a few flower heads from the garden icing sugar, to dust Instructions: Preheat the oven to 120 C / gas mark 1 Whisk the egg whites until they form soft peaks and then gradually add the sugar, whisking as you go until you have glossy, marshmallowlike peaks. Fold in the cornflour, vinegar and vanilla extract. Cover a baking tray with baking parchment and then spoon the meringue on to the paper, building up the sides to create a shallow bowl. Bake for an hour, then turn off the heat and leave the meringue inside until the oven is completely cool. Ideally, this should be overnight. When you are ready to assemble the pavlova, peel the baking parchment away from the bottom of the meringue and place it on a serving plate. Break the chocolate into pieces and put in a bowl over a pan of simmering water. When the chocolate has melted, use it to coat the inside of the meringue and then leave to cool. Cut the fruit into chunks and tidy up the berries. Whip the cream in a large bowl until it forms soft peaks, gently fold in the vanilla extract and pile the whipped cream into the meringue base. Arrange the fruit in a non-arranged sort of way all over the cream. For the coulis, put the berries in a pan with the caster sugar. Bring slowly to the boil, then simmer gently for 5 minutes. Allow to cool slightly before sieving into a jug, ready for pouring. When you are ready to serve the pavlova, decorate the top with mint leaves and flowers and dust generously with icing sugar. London s first Bombay Café, DISHOOM specialises in authentic Indian grilled food and eclectic cocktails. Head chef, Naved Nasir puts the emphasis on vibrant cuisine enjoyed in a bustling environment. Original and experimental dishes are created by Nasir and his team to be enjoyed with unusual, exotic Indian-inspired cocktails and the sounds of chilled out café jazz. The restaurant s name Dishoom is the old Bollywood sound effect produced when a hero lands a good punch, or when a bullet flies through the air. It s also the equivalent of Mojo. Find your Dishoom. Dishoom 12 Upper St. Martin's Lane My earliest food memory My mum cooking the very best Shammi kebab I have ever tasted in my life! My favourite cookbook I would say Prasad. It s an amazing Indian cookbook and one of the few featuring truly authentic recipes by some of the greatest Indian chefs in the world. The kitchen appliance I can t live without Personally I can t survive without a nice charcoal fired clay oven. I wouldn t be without my tandoor. My culinary tip Use cloves sparingly. Cloves are an integral spice in Indian cooking and used correctly, provide a delicate flavour that helps to lift and accentuate a variety of dishes in so many different ways. Use too much and you can end up ruining the whole meal. My favourite food shop Dorabji in Pune, India. Every time I visit, it takes me back to my early days as an amateur chef, and it is the very best place to shop for food. My dream dining companion I think it would be the philanthropist Nita Ambani. I really admire her and she is a massive foodie. My comfort food Very simple. I love the taste of Dal and plain rice with maybe some yoghurt. My pet hates The misconception that Indian food is just curry! There are so many different aspects to authentic Indian cooking coming from a culinary heritage centred around tradition and regionality. My tipple of choice Definitely our very own Chaijito.

Recipe for the Chaijito is as follows: Start with a High Ball Glass - Take a pinch of fresh coriander and a pinch of fresh mint leaves (about 6 leaves for each) - Add 20ml fresh lime juice, 20ml chai syrup (chai syrup is sugar syrup infused with vanilla pods, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, star anise) - Muddle this all together - Fill the glass 2/3 full with crushed ice - Pour 50ml infused rum through the ice - (We infuse Pampero blanco with the same sweet spices as used in the chai syrup above) - Muddle this all together - Top with more crushed ice - Splash with soda - Garnish with a wedge of lime and a fresh mint sprig. -

ST MARTIN S COURTYARD news & events spring / summer 2011 Brand new Thai concept coming to St Martin s Courtyard The fifth and final restaurant opens at St Martin s Courtyard early summer Suda, a contemporary Thai restaurant, is a brand new concept from the founders of Patara, known for their fine Thai cuisine. London s newest Thai restaurant is set to have one main obsession: rice. Whilst in the UK, the ubiquitous greeting is "How are you", all around Thailand you'll hear people ask each other "Gin khao reuyang?" which literally translates as "Have you eaten rice yet?" So important is this staple, that it has permeated Thai culture through the arts, folklore, ritual and language. Suda, will be bringing this Thai obsession to St Martin s Courtyard with an extensive menu incorporating both rare and interesting varieties of rice, cooked in a number of regional styles and with some surprising and delicious twists. Suda is much more than a restaurant experience, customers can see, hear and taste the food they eat. A new range of products, carefully selected from the best artisan producers in Thailand, will also be available to take home. New shops opening this summer St Martin s Courtyard welcomes four new shops due to open this summer.
