3 Technical Information EN ISO 20345: Apart from a number of basic requirements, the EN ISO mark on a product bears on the additional requirements mentioned below. If the product meets these additional requirements, this is indicated by a symbol on the shoe. Explanation of the symbols: SB Protective footwear for professional use with toecaps designed to give protection against impact when tested at an energy level of 200 joules S1 Anti-static properties, energy absorption of seat region and closed heel S2 As S1 plus water resistance and water absorption of upper material S3 As S2 plus steel midsole for penetration resistance and cleated outer sole S4 All-rubber or all-polymer footwear S5 As S4 plus steel midsole for penetration resistance and cleated outer sole Additional marks for special applications: Penetration resistance - P Conductive - C Anti-static - A Energy absorption - E Insulation against heat - HI Insulation against cold - CI Water-resistant upper - WRU Resistance to hot contact - HRO As from February 2012, all safety footwear will have to comply with SANS or its international equivalent CE The SANS specification replaces four previous locally-developed standards, SANS 741, 1114, 1167 and The NRCS (National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications) which was previously the regulatory arm of the will enforce the specifications, and non-compliant products will be sanctioned in accordance with the NRCS Act (Act 5 of 2008).
