5 MAMA ELEGANT THE ICONIC FACE OF ELEGANT TWINS SCHOOL OF COSMETOLOY, LAGOS. DR. (Mrs.) Elizabeth Adebisi Osinsanya (OON, JP), also known as Elegant Twins, is a celebrated personality and icon in the beauty industry of Nigeria. She celebrated her 80th birthday and 60 years in business in September According to her, she has seen and done it all when it comes to the beauty industry in Nigeria. DARLING magazine had the rare opportunity to have an interview session with her focusing on her numerous contributions to the Nigerian beauty industry. She also spoke extensively on questions on what has kept her in the 60 years of business as well. Please tell us a bit about yourself I am Dr. (Mrs.) Elizabeth Adebisi Osinsanya (OON, JP). I am married with four children (inclusive of a set of TWINS), grandchildren and two great grandchildren. However, my dear husband has left to be with the Lord. Elegant Twins School of Cosmetology has been around for several decades; can you recall how it all started? Well, it all started as a joke (with smiles). I never envisaged things will turn out this way, that is why it is very important to always listen to our parents whenever they give you a piece of advice. During my school days, I used to help people to do their hair styles because my mother knew how to do native hair so I used to help my mom and one Togolese lady (Mama Bobo) who used to lived in our house. She used to dye people s hair and I would always go there and be watching how it was done. Thereafter, I went to school in London to improve upon my skills and started a salon at my house in London. Later, we moved to Nigeria and I set up the school in 1959, which we are still running till date. So did you always want to be a hairstylist? No! Growing up I had always wanted to be nurse because I have always loved to help people around me. However, my dad discouraged me because he had realized over the years that, my passion is rather in hairstyling and not nursing. So my dad gradually convinced me to take hairstyling as my profession even though it was very tough for me but I had to obey my dad. So that is how I found myself in this industry. What was your first major job in the industry? Kingsway Stores was looking for a hairdresser sometime around 1953 and a sister who knew that I had been doing people s hair in the house, recommended me. So I was invited for the interview and was given someone to style the hair and because I was doing it in the house, I already knew what to do so within a very short time it was done to the amazement of every body around. The head of the department at that time was Mr. Peter (European), he was so impressed that he decided immediately to send me to London. I was overjoyed, Me, to London? Wow I just couldn t believe it but I was so happy and couldn t wait to break the news to my parents back home. Darling 05
6 So when did you finally go to London? Finally, in 1957, I travelled to London and before I got there, they had already prepared a school for me with good accommodation and everything I needed. However, something funny happened immediately I got to London (laughing out loud). At that time, I still had the nursing dreams alive on my mind so I decided to use the opportunity in London to divert to nursing. But my dad kept insisting on the hairdressing to the point of even disowning me if I did not put the nursing dream aside and focus on the hairdressing. So immediately I put the nursing dream aside to fully focus on the hairdressing in London because I had so much love and respect for my dad. Thank God, it is the hairdressing that has made me who I am today! What has inspired you to be able to stay in the industry for all these years? It is God s calling, God called me into this business, that is why I have stayed up till now. I also thank God for the good parents He gave me. They encouraged me to go into the business. I didn t want to do it at the initial stage. Nobody taught me how to make hair; I will just go to our tenants and help them to make their hair. That was how it started. Since I started, I have not done any other thing. And God has blessed me with so many things. I have built houses and bought cars from it. What would you say have been some of your greatest achievements so far? I am the first hairdresser that the government recognized and honored as OON (Order Of The Niger) by President Obasanjo in Abuja. Secondly, by the grace of God I started the Nigerian hairdressers and beauticians association also known as NASHCO. Thirdly, the small ELEGANT TWINS salon I started in London has grown into today s Elegant Twins School of Cosmetology in Nigeria. To sum it all up, I will say that by the grace of God, I have done a lot for the Nigerian beauty industry including being part of the team that put the current NABTECH curriculum together. What is your opinion about the state of things in the industry? The industry is growing every minute; it is doing marvelously well most especially because knowledge is more accessible than it was sometime back. New trends emerge daily. The Nigerian film industry for example, is doing very well partly because of the beauty industry. Are there some goals you would have loved to achieve that you have not achieved up till now? All beauticians and hairdressers in Nigeria are my children and I am most satisfied with that. God has given me so many things for which I am very grateful Tell us more about the School of Cosmetology? I started on number 28, Ondo West Street, Ebutte Metta, Lagos. I learnt everything in the beauty industry from head to toe. When I went to London, I had the opportunity to learn everything in the beauty industry from head to toe, just name it, hair cut, make-up, facials, nails just to mention a few. The only thing I did not learn in school is Spa but I had to employ experts till I finally learnt it. When I started, I had only 12 students and all of them graduated from the school successfully. Gradually, the school started expanding by the grace of God to what it is now. Please tell us about your relationship with Lorna Nigeria over the years? Lorna Nigeria was the first company to manufacture synthetic attachments in Nigeria and I am happy to say that I was the first to teach people about how to fix the synthetic attachments. When Lorna came into Nigeria, I was the one who introduced NASH- CO to them and since then we have always worked together as partners in the beauty industry. By the grace of God, I have really enjoyed working with Lorna Nigeria. What advice do you have for young ladies willing to go into this business? First, I will advise them to learn in order to earn, they should make up their mind about it and take time to understand whatever they want to do. Secondly, I will advise them to have keen interest in the job they do. Otherwise, they wouldn t make it but if you have interest in it, you will put all your effort into it and ensure you succeed at it. Fun Facts: Mama Elegant believes it is impossible for her to retire from her passion. She virtually sneaks into office sometimes without her children s knowledge. Darling 06

20 World s Highest Mohawk
21 Kazuhiro Watanabe A Japanese designer holds the World Record for tallest Mohawk haircut in the world. It took three cans of hairspray, one large bottle of gel and, of course, 15 years to grow it out but Kazuhiro Watanabe made history. His gravity defying Mohawk stands 3 ft. 8.6 inches proud of his skull and earned him a place in the 2013 edition of the Guinness book of World Record. Watanabe unveiled his hair-do in a big way at a press event in New York in 2013 to mark the launch of the new book. According to him, It was a lot of work... but I am happy to have achieved the world s No 1, Adding that it had taken him 15 years to grow the Mohawk to its present size. To get it into shape takes three stylists, three canisters of hair spray and a bottle of hair gel, Watanabe said. Without gel and hairspray, the hair reaches his knees. He began his quest to get into the Guinness Book of World Records when he was 20, although he did not initially mind which record he held. One attempt that he considered before taking on the Mohawk challenge was to drink the most tabasco sauce. My children haven t seen me with my Mohawk up. Only pictures of it, he says. However, his 10-year-old girl promises to one day beat his record. The previous holder of the record for the biggest Mohawk was Stefan Srocka, of Germany, with a hair-do that stood 31.5 inches tall. 24 Braids for Brides The choice of the right wedding hairstyle is as responsible as the choice of a wedding dress. Sophia Loren once said: The right hairstyle can make a plain woman beautiful and a beautiful woman unforgettable. Looking unforgettable on the wedding day, whether you are the bride or a bridesmaid is crucial for any lady. Bridal up-dos using weaves or sometimes natural hair have been the top hairstyle picks among brides of all ages worldwide. However we are stepping away from the conventional up-dos to braids which are the next best thing for brides on their big day. Braids are simply fabulous. Widely recognized as a versatile style which is easy to wear and perfect for every occasion/function. They come in different sizes and length. However, longer braids are more perfect than short braids for any bridal style simply because it can be styled into an up-do to make for the perfect bridal hairstyle. Many women are starting to embrace braids on their big day but most brides still shy away from this style. It is much easier to find a wedding guest or bridesmaid wearing braids but much more difficult to find a bride wear one. Even when you look it up on the internet, you find very few search results. *You can search it right now* Styled differently and specially, your braids will be transformed from basic to bridal. Styling options - A box braid up-do is best for a bridal style as opposed to a down-ward up-do. - Styled with the right bridal accessories, your braids are sure to look fabulous and will make you unforgettable. Darling 24
25 So, if you can t decide between a weave and braid, we suggest you pay attention to the variety of different bridal hairstyles out there keep an open mind and pick your style based on what will look best on you, be it braids or weave. Darling 25

32 Weaves are beautiful, elegant and oh so classy. The right type of weave has a transformative effect, taking a person s look from Ok to the classic Wow Effect. Weaves are best known for their protective styling options availing the wearer the opportunity to keep their hair perfectly tucked away whilst still looking gorgeous. Weaves are low maintenance hair extensions that require little care however, most people equate little care to no care at all thereby neglecting it. Here are some best care practices for your weaves. Using the right styling tools. It is absolutely wrong to use one comb for both curly weave and straight weave. It matters a lot especially when you use a styling tool meant for straight weave for curly weave. This can be damaging to the curls as well as the longevity of the weaves. Be sure to pick out the right comb or brush for your style. Your stylist can assist you with that. Apply styling cream to your weave. The texture of your weave changes with time. It gets duller, stronger and most time tangles up. Apply serum or conditioners to it depending on the nature of the weave before styling. This helps maintain the shine and smoothness. It also prevents dryness as well as shedding. Using roller set or wraps Curls loosen up overtime and one of the best ways to maintain it is by using roller sets right before settling in for the night. For straight weaves, avoid plaits. Simply comb the weave and wrap it round your head before tying your scarf. Sleeping with a silk or satin head wrap. This is particularly important because our bed sheets and pillowcases are coarse and can frizzle up our hair. Ever heard of the word bed-hair? Not at all sexy to wake up and find out that your once fabulous weave has lost all of it s fabulousness overnight. So, it is best to wrap it up before retiring for the night Use heat protectant to avoid damage Maintaining your weave also involves its overall appearance which includes your leave-out. Be sure to blend your natural hair with your weaves. Your heat styling tools are effective here however, use a heat protectant in order to avoid damaging your hair. Applying edge control to your hairlines secures any flyaway that would want to mess up your look. Darling 32

51 Discover Africa Fashion is a universal language, and just like language itself which is diverse, fashion is also diverse. A person s fashion may depend on the latest trends, personality or sometimes perception. African fashion has always been known for its daring use of color, from acid oranges to luminous blues. African clothing in particular has a vibrant and interesting history to match its bright and bold textiles dating as far back as 5,000BC. A trip down memory lane, researchers have traced the precise origins of cloth production in Africa back to the tombs of ancient Egypt. Archaeologists found linen remnants in ancient Egypt, as well as fifth-century cotton cloth remnants in Meroe, in northern Sudan. In West Africa, woven fiber pieces dating back to the ninth century C.E. have been found in Nigeria, and woven cotton cloth dating to the eleventh century has been recovered in Mali. Evidence of loom use in Mauritania dates back to the eleventh century. Some Significant developments have taken place in African fashion over the last years. The first of these has to do with the global markets embracing the African fabrics and fashion. Africa is not only seen as a sourcing destination but also as a source of inspiration. Whether it is for bright colors, patterns or prints the world is looking to African fashion. African fabrics and fashion are no longer seen by western audiences and buyers solely as traditional wear that can only be worn by Africans themselves. A typical example was when Michelle Obama wore a top by Nigerian designer Maki Oh during her Africa tour in 2013 shedding light on the continent as a serious contender for fashion s emerging markets. Darling 51
52 through Fashion Hand in hand with this development has been the increasing use of African textiles and other craft and fashion elements by western designers, such as Louis Vuitton s use of the Kenyan Shuke in its Spring/Summer 2012 collection. Another has been the growing number of African fashion designers who showcase their work on catwalks outside Africa. Brands such as Mina Evans, Uzuri Couture, Wana Sambo and many more have showcased their designs outside the continent s shores. Fashion trends in Africa just like in any other part of the world goes beyond clothes. It also includes hair trends. Hair is seen as a crucial part of a woman s body image. Hairstyles in Africa is a way of promoting Values - Cultures, Arts and Lifestyles. African Women are known for dazzling and reinventing classic Hairstyles with the focus on length, up-dos, and lots of volume. These hairstyles are known for creativity, natural thickness and fullness. So they have become more of a fashion statement, and like all fashion pieces, they also evolve over time. Tresses helps Women explore the World of Hair, and give them a change of look.african Hairstyle is having a major moment right now. From the braids, twists, cornrows, bantuknots, strawcurls, dreadlocks, fros, braidhawks, fauxlocs, jumbobraids, and afrohawks there are so many African hairstyles to choose from. The best way to find your new African Hairstyle is to pick a look you d love to copy or covet yourself. Darling 52

57 Shoplinks Beauty Salon Adeniyi Jones, Ikeja. Styling hair is hard work. You re required to be creative, friendly, organized and diplomatic. These are the very attributes that easily come across when one comes into contact with Mrs. Bukky, the professional hairstylist and manager of Shoplink salon located on the Adeniyi Avenue, Ikeja. Darling magazine spent some time with Mrs. Bukky. Kindly join me as we delve a little bit into the life (both professional and family) of Mrs. Bukky Oke. Tell us a Little About Your Family, Education and Work Experience I was born in Iyin in Ekiti State. I am the fifth born of the eight children (six females, two males) and I am happily married. I have been practicing professional hairdressing for the past 20 years. Education makes a lot difference in the beauty industry like in most other job markets. I only got to the secondary school level but I believe that education for the hairstylist could be working under someone else who has talent and the know-how to learn first hand. How did you get your start in the industry? I started learning professional hairdressing with Aunty when I relocated to Lagos after secondary school. The salon was located on college road in Ogba. I didn t have the interest in the beginning but my aunty kept inviting to her salon day after day until I gradually developed a keen interest in this profession. What was your mission at the outset? I have real passion to help others with whatever I have so my mission was to establish my own salon and use that to help to train a lot of people in our community. What inspires you? What really inspires me everyday is the belief I have in my dream of setting up my own salon to train all these young girls who leave school with no money to learn a trade. I believe that when God gives you a talent, you should be able to pass on that talent and knowledge to others. To what do you attribute your success as a professional stylist? Every time I consider where I am coming from and where I am today, I give thanks to God almighty for his grace and kindness. Nevertheless, I never cease to seek professional advice from senior hairstylists in the industry. I also invest a lot to learn in order to upgrade myself. I also think that humility has played an important role in my success as a professional hairstylist. Do you have any future goals for the business? Yes, to establish a salon and a school to train the talented but needy people in the community for free. I also have a goal of creating a range of hair products bearing my own name. Does your business get involved in the local community or support local charities? Yes, we do. Until I am able to set up my own salon and school, I am presently using the opportunity and platform I have to encourage young girls without money to train for free. So far, we have trained about thirty girls without taking money from any of them. How do you stay up on trends? I and my people are always on youtube, going through magazines to look for new trends and styles We even go outside purposely looking for new styles and there are times that I go to other salons and pay to learn new styles. Last but not least, some customers also bring me new styles always and I dedicate my time to learn all these new styles. How Would You Handle It If a Client Is Dissatisfied with Your Work? Customer satisfaction is very important here so I always ensure that my customers are happy with our services. But no one is perfect so if I ever fall short of customers expectation, I would first apologize and plead to be allowed to make it up for him or her. Our customers should always leave here satisfied. Hardest obstacle you ve had to overcome? The hardest obstacle, I believe I have overcome is people management. It was the toughest thing for me at the initial stages. But with time and by the grace of God, I have learnt to manage my staff based on their individual strengths and weaknesses. If you had one piece of advice to give to someone just starting out in this business, what would it be? First of all, those who want to set up salon should first invest and learn about the job because if you do not know anything about the hair business, your hairstylists treat you differently and it is always bad. Secondly, the younger hairstylists must be very patient and respectful to learn the best on the job. They should also learn to appreciate whoever is helping them through their training. Fun fact: Mrs. Bukky believes that for any business to succeed, one should always try and find the true balance between what is best for the customer and what is best for the business. Darling 57
