Make sure to cover your child s exposed skin with sunscreen. Dress in a few thin layers to keep dry and warm. Only ice skate and sled in designated areas. Do not go to areas that are not checked for safety. Wash hands, although the cold weather does not cause colds, it is more common in cold weather as we spend more time in close quarters. 6 Page 6 Staying Healthy around the Holidays Each year the holidays come around, we celebrate with friends, family and that delicious food! Often all those holiday feasts cause us to pack on a few pounds, but here are some tips to keeping those extra pounds to a minimum this year. Act before you eat! Make a plan to do something physical the day of the holiday feast (maybe an early morning walk or after dinner stroll with the family). Plan on pushing your fitness plan a few minutes longer around the holidays. Come visit the gym a little earlier or stay a bit late. Make your time off meaningful; not an excuse to sit around. Eat before you eat! Many people skip breakfast in order to save room for the big meal, but this is not the smartest choice. Be sure to have a light breakfast that includes proteins to keep you fuller longer. Some healthy options include a hard boiled egg with fruit, scrambled egg whites with a few of Should You Take a Pension Buyout? If you've received an offer from your employer to buy out your pension, you're facing a big decision: Should you accept the lump sum or continue taking your monthly pension payments? You might be afraid that taking a lump sum would subject you to a big tax bill. But if you roll the money into a traditional IRA, you may be able to avoid paying taxes on those funds until you start your withdrawals. Consider your estate plans. Pension payments C o m mu n i t y I n t e re s t your favorite veggies, whole wheat toast with light peanut butter or a fiber rich cereal with low-fat milk. Lighten up what you eat! We can usually find some healthy replacement options for most holiday recipes. Try plain yogurt or fat-free sour cream in dips, and casseroles. Cut the amount of sugar or use apple sauce for half the sugar measurement. Try lighter oils and less butter for cooking. Make gravy with chicken broth rather than creams. Think before you eat! Make smart choices; place small portions of your favorites on your plate and choose items that are holiday specials. Treat yourself to something you can t have all year, but don t over do it. Again include lean proteins and veggies to fill you. Savor the food, eat slowly and enjoy the taste, the smell and the flavors. Then wait for a bit if you think you want seconds, if you re full don t fill up again! Celebrate smartly and keep off those extra pounds! generally end when you and your spouse are gone, but with an IRA, you may still end up with something you can leave behind. Don't forget about inflation. If your pension payments aren't indexed for inflation, they'll lose purchasing power over time. Within your IRA, you can invest for growth potential, but remember that all investments are subject to some level of risk. You're facing a big choice. Get all the facts, and then get some professional help from your financial and tax advisors.
