Before, a beggar could chat to you from the street. My brother and I would listen to a terrible tale of woe. We would explain that we were not allowed to open the front door but if he could step into the garden and come to our window we would give him some money from our piggy banks. Before, our dog, a gigantic Dobermann with a yen for the wild life, would depart with a pack of neighbourhood dogs for a walkabout. We would see her a few days later, spent, tired and shagged out. She would come trawling in on an afternoon rank from the jol in the Botanical Gardens. Before, I knew most of the neighbours and they knew us. They also knew to return my granny when she got a little lost on her pavement plant redistribution expeditions. The walls went up really quickly suddenly, the entire neighbourhood got the brief. The bigger, the better. And put in a great big gate while you re at it. Alarms came in at about the same time. And just like that, things changed. I started having nightmares about walking across the hall at night and setting the sirens off. And the dog instantly became less slutty. Against her better judgment, I m sure. This is how change happens. Something imperceptible shifts in a city s consciousness. Somebody builds the first wall and before you know it, the very nature of the community has changed. I was thinking that we must be in the midst of such a change right now when the third person in two days jumped a red robot. I hooted like a mad thing, just as I had hooted at the first and second. I followed the third person all the way up a long road and berated them. They were driving a car full of people. Everyone in the car looked at me like I was the crazy person. I suppose I never got the brief. When I was 14, my dear friend Alex Simmonds (the street in Johannesburg CBD was named for her family) was killed in a car crash when somebody jumped a red robot in the middle of the night. The person was drunk. The result was devastating. I have a real fear of red robot jumpers. But I can understand how these things happen. With the walls, it was timing. They went up just as the terrible apparatus of apartheid started to break down. Along with freedom came freedom of movement and a laager mentality quickly took hold in the former white neighbourhoods. Theft and robberies became a frequent occurrence and suddenly you couldn t have the only house on the street where somebody could walk up to the window and casually help himself to the piggy bank. So your parents built a wall and secured the property. In retrospect, I feel that we lost our sense of community just when we should have been coming into it. I don t know any of the people lurking behind their walls now. I recognise some neighbours purely because they take a walk and so we happen to coincide on the street. Now, when people move into the hood and start renovating, their first act is to make the walls bigger (not the circles). God forbid we should catch a glimpse of each other in our daily habits. So when Eskom changed brand identity and became Eishkom, people appeared to have decided to take the gap. They have started jumping robots even when they are working and not load shedding. It happens just like that. The rules of engagement change. A city becomes something new and different. It s not always a good thing. Do you have a question for our #MCJULY
