Many people spend big money to listen to the best speakers in the world. We buy books about inspirational journeys and send text messages of motivation to those we love. From Friday to Sunday, South Africans from all walks of life can be found in places of worship to receive their weekly dose of spiritual upliftment. This tells me that, generally, most people want to be, and do, better. The human heart desires serenity, progress and meaningful connection with others. If this sounds familiar to you, then you will love this issue of Marie Claire, which I am proud to have guest edited. We bring you South Africa s trailblazers, the badass women who, with their skills, expertise, talent and humanity, have made strides in their respective fields. From sport to business, science and social justice, these are South Africa s stars. They are badass because they embrace life, rather than fear it; they keep trying even when the world says STOP! What has stood out for me about our badass women is how even in their extraordinariness they are most ordinary. They have been criticised, and felt fear and doubt. Some have had the unforgiving gaze of public opinion follow their every move. Like most of us, they too have had to recalibrate when a goal is just too far out of reach. Their stories and journeys will fill you with hope and open up that part of you that wants to be and do better. This feature will unleash the badass woman in you. In my work as a broadcaster, I remember most the stories of ordinary women who do extraordinary things with the resources at their disposal, no matter how small. The jarring truth, though, is that women still get paid less than men. For every R100 that a man makes, a woman will earn only R73 for the same work. From the World Bank to global research companies, research has been produced which proves that investing in women makes economic sense. They use their income to start businesses, invest in their local economies and educate themselves and others. Yet, the world of work doesn t always value them. This has not stopped women from being badass, though. We really ought to take a moment and reflect on the many glorious achievements we have made and continue to make, despite the many obstacles in our paths. The good news is that South Africa s economy grew more rapidly than was presumed for %, rather than the 0.6% predicted. It may not be much, but it certainly is encouraging, and to be truly badass we must believe in our capacity to do better, for others and ourselves. I was reminded of this when I paged through your Jan/Feb issue. Marie Claire is like a sister, ever-present to nourish my interest in all things fashion. Most importantly, the narratives are reflective of women across the globe, as depicted in Filter and A portrait of Socotra. I have friends across the colour spectrum. I enjoy pop and house music. I appreciate the weaving of maxhosa by Laduma and love Steve Madden. My bookshelf is graced by Toni Morrison, Khaled Hosseini, Lauren Weisberger and Pumla Dineo Gqola. I m universal, hence my appreciation for Marie Claire. Within your issues I can listen to the voice of a sister in Saudi Arabia, Mexico or Peru, travel to the islands of Mozambique, and imagine the places I will eventually visit when I make it up that ladder of success. With Marie Claire, I never run out of stories to read. That s the beauty of your magazine that it s not just pages of fashion but also doses of journalism. This means I don t have to be coerced into buying a copy by the beautiful gifts that are on offer, but rather [I buy it] for the quality of the publication, a publication that encompasses the South African woman, one who is representative of our society today. 15 filter news and views from around the world INDIA skies first indian woman to fly fighter jet solo TO THE Avani Chaturvedi, 24, has become the first Indian woman to independently fly a fighter jet. This isn t the first time she s made history, though. In 2016, just one year after India committed to creating equality in its armed forces, Avani and her colleagues Bhawana Kanth and Mohana Singh became the first women in India to be inducted into the Indian Air Force fighter squadron. 16 global The Winter Games There was a tangibly different feeling at this year s Olympic Winter Games. Women s sports took centre stage and, for the first time in the Games history, they enjoyed more television time than men. This year was also huge for Czech Republic s Ester Ledecká, the first woman to win gold in two different events (alpine skiing and giant slalom snowboarding) during one Winter Games. tunisia EMPOWERED THROUGH LAW Since adopting a new constitution in 2014, Tunisia has aspired to create a more equal society. The country has one of the highest rates of domestic violence in the world, but its women now have renewed hope. A new law has broadened the definition of violence to recognise and criminalise physical, psychological, sexual and financial abuse against women, with special provisions against sexual harassment in public spaces. The hope is that the Tunisian government will soon have enough funding to set up aid clinics for women who need help divorcing their abusive husbands. 17 filter uk SEXISM IN THE CITY The UK is a major global economic hub and one that s notoriously difficult to crack as an entrepreneur. Debbie Wosskow and Anna Jones have founded The AllBright (inspired by Madeleine Albright), the UK s first women-only private members club in London, with a view to tackling the still-rampant sexism in the city s business sphere. This platform will help professionals to invest, connect and collaborate, turning the spotlight on Britain s unequal and unfair working environment. syria Women take the north In a country that has been devastated by war, there seems little left to fight for. But this hasn t stopped Arabic and Kurdish women from joining Yekîneyên Parastina Jin (Women Protection Units). These battalions of women are helping the Syrian Democratic Forces prevent ISIL from gaining ground in the northern Syrian region of Rojava.
