You cannot have failed to notice we have gone Naked. I would sincerely like to thank each brave celebrity who chose to go bare to demonstrate the aching vulnerability of our nation s women and children. We are blowing the whistle because enough is enough. (pg 45) It is almost a new season! And we have all the new faces, all the new trends and everything you need to know to be ready for winter. There you are on holiday when the local cultural entertainment, usually of the dancing and singing variety, unfolds by way of a protracted demonstration on the beach. There it is the alien culture, repackaged into a palatable mash-up for tourist consumption! Should you attempt to dance along? Clap in time? Just sit mutely and wait for it all to end? How do you interpret the strange singing and dancing? How do you cope with the mysterious cultural interlude that is now being foisted on you? By the light of a recent full moon on a beach in Mauritius I chose to tap my foot along vaguely and smile aimlessly into the middle distance as the cultural disturbance of the song and dance made me think of an open letter addressed to all South Africans that I had read that very morning. It was penned by one M. Poppins (naturally) who wanted to express her disapproval of our culture. She was a proud foreigner (nation state of origin remains unspecified in her missive) who was married to a lovely South African man and who had lived in SA for the past five years, both in Joburg and Cape Town. She was now fed up with our uncivilised ways and wanted to leave, post haste. Per umbrella (I presume). First she wanted to register her dismay at our badly behaved nation. Here, in short, is her list of complaints and resolutions: people drive badly; people are rude and racist, especially in queues at the supermarket, and sometimes to hapless supermarket checkout staff. It is no way for a civilised nation to behave. She is leaving us to our devices but not before she has her say. So there. My first instinct is to rise up in defence of South Africans. We may be a little rough around the edges, and never yield to pedestrians, but there is so much to delight in our rowdy ways. We are surprisingly nice enough, despite our history and years of social tension. I could start listing a daily litany of friendly exchanges that smooth my way or the small acts of kindness I witness all the time. What does it help for me to say that the same taxi driver who breaks all the rules is also the only guy to let you into the traffic? Or that the evolution of hand signals people make indicating their route brings tears of nostalgia to my eyes when I find myself in some foreign clime with a grumpy taxi driver. I could make comparisons and say the driving is worse elsewhere and nobody gives a damn about you in most big cities. It would all be falling on deaf ears because Ms Poppins sees what she wants to and she is not alone just reading the comments beneath her letter demonstrates in shocking terms the sense of cultural dissonance that permeates our country. I worry that we are all just dancing to our own tune and that, despite the manifest desire to create a national narrative on Mandela Day and at international sporting events, you could be sitting at a café and experience the same sense of bafflement as any old tourist when the performing band of traditional Zulu dancers makes its rounds.. I would like to believe that there is a broader cultural shorthand that all South Africans understand, whatever our dancing styles; possibly the same set of ineffable characteristics that has so offended Ms Poppins. Our gruff, blunt, belligerent ways are our own, after all. I wish Ms Poppins would simply unpack her carpet bag and her sense of alienation and give us a chance because bigotry is almost as bad as feeling like a tourist in the land of your birth.
