1 GREATER LONDON 3/567 (E.01.K099) TQ BERMONDSEY STREET AND GIFCO BUILDING AND CAR PARK Assessment of an Archaeological Excavation at Bermondsey Street and GIFCO Building and Car Park, London Borough of Keith-Lucas, F Brockley : Pre-Construct Archaeology Ltd, 2003, 85pp, figs, tabs, refs An evaluation trench was initially extended for excavation, but on the discovery of 16th century timber structures was extended further. Natural alluvial deposits, peat and the silting of ditch ditch were by by a later medieval ditch. A 16th century revetment of timber boards and wattle retained a baulk of material left after clearing part of the ditch. Bridges across the cleared parts of the ditch were found. Early 17th century dumped layers, a series of pits, post holes, and a probable tanning pit were found below a late 17th century brick and timber drains. The medieval period brought two phases of north-south ditches containing well preserved material and finds, including five turned wooden bowls and seventeen leather shoes. These ditches may relate to Bermondsey Abbey. Early post-medieval dump layers sealed the ditch and were cut by two phases of well. The earlier well was lined with two wooden barrels truncated by an 19th century brick lined well. An 18th century floor and wall were recorded.[au(adp)] SMR primary record number: 28/143 1
