The Canadian Skin Cancer Foundation recommends monthly skin self-examinations. If spots or moles on your body fit any one of the ABCDEs of early detection, ask your doctor to have a look. Remember to check your whole body, including the bottoms of your feet, your scalp and your armpits! 5 Words From Willie Hello everyone! During Remembrance Day this month, many of us will stop to think about all the men and women who have risked their lives for their country. Many of us will hear about the poem, In Flanders Fields, written by Dr. John McCrae. Do you know how Dr. McCrae came to write this iconic poem? One of his closest friends and comrades was killed in the trenches near Ypres, Belgium. He was buried in a humble grave with a simple wooden cross. Wild poppies bloomed between the crosses marking the many graves. The next day, unable to help his friend or any of the others who had died, Dr. McCrae gave them a voice through the poem, In Flanders Fields. In Flanders Fields In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved, and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders Fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders Fields Dr. McCrae died in 1918 from pneumonia and meningitis. He died not knowing the outcome of the war, but he did know that the poem he wrote had been a success. Soon after its publication, it was translated into many languages and used in advertising the sale of the first Victory Loan Bonds in Canada in In part because of the poem s popularity, the poppy was adopted as the Flower of Remembrance. After all, I have been a patient of yours since somewhere in the mid-1990s. Words seem insufficient as I struggle to say thanks for not only your medical guidance and treatment, but also for the many kindnesses shown to me in your offices over these years.
