3 Brighton Museum 4 Constable and Brighton 8 April to 8 October 2017 Admission payable, members free John Constable and his family stayed in the emerging seaside resort of Brighton between 1824 and During his time in Brighton, Constable made repeated walks along the coast and up onto the Downs. Constable and Brighton will follow Constable s own walking and painting sequences, illustrating the series of sketches and paintings he produced as he explored the local landscape. The exhibition will explore the impact and influence of the work he made here and bring back to Brighton for the first time sketches, drawings and paintings created during his time in the town. Highlights include: Chain Pier, Brighton (1826-7, Tate), a fine oil painting featuring the early Brighton landmark which was swept away in 1896, in its first exhibition in the city for 20 years; Rainstorm over the Sea (c , Royal Academy of Arts), a passionate, early impressionistic oil sketch; along with A Windmill near Brighton (1824, Tate), a jewel-like pastoral scene of a sun-drenched windmill typical of the Sussex countryside in Constable s time. Also on view are the artist s painting box, and his children s toy stagecoach. 4 Photo-punk: 40 images from the birth of UK punk by Ian Dickson and Kevin Cummins Continues to 5 March 2017 PRINTS & DRAWINGS GALLERY 2016 marks 40 years since the punk phenomenon first hit the streets and venues of the UK, leading to a pervasive musical, fashion and cultural movement. Explore punk s earliest years through the photography of Kevin Cummins (NME) and Ian Dickson (Sounds), who captured the impact of bands including The Sex Pistols, The Damned, The Clash and many more. 8mm zoom Reflex cine camera by Bolex Paillard, 1963 Experimental Motion: the Art of Film Innovation Continues to 4 June 2017 SPOTLIGHT GALLERY This display tells the story of experimental film-making in Brighton & Hove, from 1896 to the present day. Brighton and Hove have played a rich and important part in international film history: early film-making pioneers George Albert Smith and James Williamson who became known as the Brighton School worked here at the turn of the 20th century, while contemporary filmmakers and moving image artists have cemented the city s status as a hotbed of experimental film. Funded by the John Ellerman Foundation and delivered in partnership with Videoclub, Screen Archive South East and Cinecity. Visions of the Royal Pavilion Estate 14 March to 3 September 2017 PRINTS & DRAWINGS GALLERY This display showcases rarely-seen views of the Royal Pavilion Estate dating back to the 1760s, as well as cutting-edge digital reconstructions of how it might have looked. Illustrations from the earliest printed books about the estate will sit beside unrealised designs, early municipal maps and 20th century plans and images. Servant Stories From 11 February 2017 During opening hours, Free with admission, members free Hidden away from the grand public rooms the Royal Servants carried out their work, just footsteps away from the monarch, yet silent and largely unseen. Find out about the real-life stories of the First Yeoman of Confectionery, the Clerk Comptroller of the Kitchen, the Head Table Decker and other members of the Pavilion s Royal Household brought to life through the objects they used and information from our archives. Displays Events Basement and Tunnel Tours Mondays from 2 January to 27 March (excluding 16 & 23 January) pm 12, members 10, book in advance Join us for a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the basement and tunnel of the Royal Pavilion and discover more about life below stairs for the servants, from the rat catcher to George s principal private secretary. The tour ends with a visit to the tunnel which led to George IV s royal stables and riding school (now Brighton Dome). Please note: due to the service areas covered in this tour it may be subject to last minute cancellations and alterations. Annual Free Day Sunday 15 January 10am-4.30pm Free admission, drop-in To celebrate the purchase of the Royal Pavilion by the town of Brighton in 1850, admission charges are waived one day a year. The Drawing Circus Tuesday 28 March 7-10pm, 25, students 20, includes drink and materials, book in advance. 16+ The sumptuous Music Room plays host to the Drawing Circus s unique brand of theatrical life drawing. With its gilded dome ceiling, lotus-shaped chandeliers and walls decorated with Chinoiserie style red and gold canvases featuring painted dragons there can be few more inspiring interiors in the UK in which to unleash your artistic talents. The Mysterious Case of the Preston Manor skeleton Saturday 28 January 2-3pm 7.50 plus Preston Manor admission (includes free sherry & biscuits on arrival), book in advance Join house historians and members of the Brighton & Hove Archaeological Society as they unravel one of Preston Manor s most strange and macabre tales. 120 years ago on 29 January 1897 a skeleton was unearthed at Preston Manor who was believed to be the remains of the ghostly nun, Sister Agnes, contacted at a séance two months earlier. This event re-examines evidence from house archives and archaeological record, including new research. Murder Mystery Night Saturday 22 April 6pm & 8.30pm 21, members 18, book in advance Watch the drama unfold and unravel the clues in a classic murder mystery by the 368 Theatre Company. 9 The Keep 16 The Keep is an archive based near Falmer that houses the local history collections of the Royal Pavilion and Brighton & Hove Museums. Other collections include the county archive held by East Sussex Record Office and the University of Sussex Special Collections, which include the Mass Observation Archive. The Keep is open to everyone and will be of interest to family and local historians, as well as students of literature, politics and social history. Please feel free to drop in! We hold a regular programme of events, including tours of the building and a free drop-in service for researchers. Forthcoming talks will explore Brighton in the Victorian and Edwardian eras, including the town s notorious workhouses. We ll be looking at the life and work of Holocaust survivor Arnold the keep Daghani, and at remarkable Brighton resident Mary Merrifield, who travelled widely in Europe in the 19th century.
