Drawn to the Valley Newsletter June 2017 INSIDE THIS ISSUE Open Studios re-branding Featured Artist.2 & 3 Member News 4 to 16 Events..17 REMINDERS We have rebranded our Open Studios event with a new look and feel to our brochure and related materials. With enhancements to our website due to go live at the beginning of June it is an exciting time for Drawn to the Valley. Printmakers Theatre Royal Exhibition deadline for entry 07/06/17 Tavistock Exhibition deadline for entry 30/06/17. Our brochures provide visitors with maps, artist profiles and additional information on what the event and Drawn to the Valley is all about. We also know they double as keepsakes for the event itself. Working with our new designers Dartprint, with input from members our brochure front and back cover (shown above) will stay the same in terms of layout each year with the colours rotating from yellow, to blue then green each year, the artwork will change annually reflecting the diverse media on show at each years event. Working with the yellow of our signage, and the blue and green from our logo, for the brochure and related posters, adverts and signage our Open Studios event brand is intended to be eye-catching, crucially in order to encourage art lovers to pick it up in the first place. The strong colours and striking images are intended to get the reader engaged and excited. We hope you like it, brochures will be issued from the first week of July.

FEATURED ARTIST: KATHY LOVELL From childhood I have been making and designing clothes and jewellery. Major influences were my grandmother's and mother's clothes and jewellery, the styles of Coco Chanel and Jacqueline Kennedy. It was from my mother as well that I got my interest in sewing, painting, refinishing and antiquing. Mum was always making something, but she would also take the time to teach me. My life has taken a lot of twists and turns but there seem to be two recurrent themes teaching and designing / creating things. I ran an interior design company for several years but after moving to a smallholding in Cornwall, I wanted to make individual jewellery designs, inspired by my surroundings, for myself and others to wear. I take photographs constantly of what I see - as a piece of art, a diary or a visual reminder of something I want to translate into a piece of jewellery. WHAT IS THE BEST WORK RELATED THING YOU HAVE DONE RECENTLY? Making a head piece for a wedding. It was a privilege to make and design something that was part of someone s very special day. Contact Kathy for individually hand made silver and copper jewellery; earrings, statement necklaces, bracelets and hair accessories. Many items can be made to bespoke requirements. jewellery.com When I walk out in the Tamar Valley, throughout each of the seasons, I see vistas or minute detail that I am in awe of and want to capture. I take photographs constantly of what I see - as a piece of art, a diary or a visual reminder of something I want to translate into a piece of jewellery. Copper is a material that I particularly like to use, as it is was mined in the Tamar Valley. Its warm colour adds a richness to designs. I also like to combine different materials, particularly sterling silver and copper. Objects such as shells, driftwood, leaves and stones that I discover when out walking my two lively dogs are also incorporated into my work. At the moment my work seems to fall into two distinct styles -either intricately woven shapes made with silver or copper wire or heavier forged silver pieces. Being a member of Drawn to the Valley has been a significant part of my being an artist here in the Tamar Valley. I am really looking forward to Tavistock Exhibition, which is an opportunity to work with and learn from other artists.

ASK THE ARTIST Where is your favourite place? I m going to cheat and name two one is Comfort Woods, part of the Cotehele Estate and the other is Bantham beach, where I love to swim. What is your worst habit? Trying to get just one more thing done before I go out of the door! What irritates you? Running out of time when I m working on a project. Wearable hedgerow Top 2 dinner party guests? Adele I like her classic style and I would love for her to wear some of my earrings. The other would be Justin Trudeau, Canadian Prime Minister, his swearing in ceremony was feast for the eyes and the ears. Which super-power would you most like to have? Time manipulation White horses necklace What is your favourite motto? Sometimes things don t go after all, from bad to worse Actually the whole poem, by Sheenagh Pugh is pretty timely just at the moment. Night sky necklace

On May 10th DTTV had a first drawing day at a National Trust property, Cotehele. A beautiful day! We were so lucky weather wise and the twenty or so artists who attended had a terrific day. A coffee and calories was a great start, always good to "catch up". Finding various vantage points and armed with cameras, watercolours, acrylics, pastels etc we spent the day recording the beautiful estate whilst talking to several interested members of the public. How quickly the hours flew by! I am in the process of sorting a "follow up" session and work from the day can be shown at our Tamar Valley Centre Winter Exhibition. my daughters and I went to Cotehele yesterday and LOVED meeting the artists, who were so chatty and helpful, and the artwork was fabulous. Long term I would like to forge strong links with the NT and look to having other days at Lanhydrock, Buckland and Saltram. 12 TAMAR VALLEY CENTRE EXHIBITION VENUE The Tamar Valley Centre near Gunnislake provides a unique and interesting space to exhibit many forms of work; both traditional and modern. The Centre itself transforms to provide a clean fuss free background for your art, and allow the viewer to participate in your journey and flow around your exhibition. The large windows and doors let in large amounts of light, which also allows your work to be appreciated in it most natural of forms. All our exhibitions are charged on a commission basis, please contact Donna by calling or ing bookings@tamarvalley.org.uk for more information. We currently have availability for Tavistock Edge TAVISTOCK EDGE is a vibrant, exciting and fringe look at the Arts, with free, community-based events taking place in informal settings such as the street, shopping areas and other public places during Carnival Week, predominantly on Saturday 8th July It will look at the Arts through different lenses by arranging different people doing different things in different places. The ultimate purpose has to be fun, to bring a smile to people's faces - both performers and audience. To encourage people to join in or learn a new skill - for the sheer joy of it!

Clark Nicol Hosts Life Drawing Class I'm organising a life drawing session on Mon June 12th and would like to open it to all DTTV members. It's in the Nicholls Hall, Lydford, and I'm hoping to have two models to allow a group for shorter studies and an opportunity for people to work on a longer piece. If time allows, and the models are happy with the idea, we could have a go at studies combining both figures. Sharing the hire of the hall and the models the cost would be about 10. Help tuition from me is free (and probably unwelcome). If anyone is interested could they me please. clarknicol@hotmail.com

FROM THE CHAIR Iain Grant Hi Everyone. A few things i want to mention this month. Firstly it is really heartening that 100 members will participate in Open Studios this year. Great to see so many. London Exhibition Thanks to all of you who responded about possibly hiring the Royal Opera Arcade gallery later this year. We had quite a lot of interest, but several people were worried about the date offered being too close to Christmas, and others about the potential maximum cost. So I have talked to the gallery again at some length, and have come up with an alternative plan. The committee have agreed that we can go ahead and book the gallery for a date in October/November I will contact the gallery this week to sort out suitable dates. We will use DttV funds to pay the deposit, that will be recouped from those participating. To be more flexible for those who may be on a tighter budget, and those whose work is smaller or larger than average, we have worked out a cost per linear metre of hanging space which is about 120 for the week. We can perhaps offer a discounted rate for 5 metres or more. We have found a specialist carrier who will pick up all work from a central drop off point locally here, deliver it and bring unsold back the following weekend. Final cost for this is likely to be per work. This includes full insurance in transit. I have spoken to a group of artists from Poole who have used the gallery several times. They have used other London galleries. but are full of praise for the Royal Opera Arcade and have already rebooked for next year. They say they have, overall, more than covered costs. Their paintings are more expensive than most of us charge down here. They do also say however that even those who have not covered their costs felt the exposure was worthwhile. Having secured the space, you now have more time to consider whether you want to join this venture, start to prepare work, and we'll discuss at a meeting in a couple of months. Continued overleaf

CONTINUED FROM THE CHAIR Iain Grant HM Prison Dartmoor A group of us from the committee visited the Education, and particularly the Art department at the prison last month. We were invited after I happened to meet the Head of Education, who is justifiably proud of his department and was looking to form ties with a local group of artists. The Art department is small, but intensively used with all levels of artists from beginners to very competent among the prisoners. We had a fascinating visit, and have agreed to form a link with the department. We will have some of the prisoners' art work at the Tavistock Summer Exhibition, but before that there are other things we can do. The Education Department has offered further visits if anyone would like to go and see what they do. We have already agreed two workshops where a couple of us will go and teach for an afternoon, and we are going to collect any unwanted art materials to boost their very limited stock. So if any of you would like to get involved in any of these days, or donate some materials, then please let me know. My first workshop is on 20 June and I hope to take some materials for them then. Drawing days etc The Lynher Barge is back in the water and the owners are looking for possible dates for another drawing day, afloat this time. We are discussing the possibility of a display from the drawing days at TVC later in the year as part of a feature they are doing on the "Lynher" Our first Cotehele day was a success (thanks to Lin for organising) and the first day at Dartmoor Zoo is coming up (thanks to Paul) The National Marine Aquarium would welcome anyone who wants to draw/paint in the aquarium, although interested artist would have to buy an annual pass (which costs between 14 and 18 depending on the type, and allows unlimited access for the year). If there is enough interest and work produced, then a themed exhibition there next year is a possibility. We also plan to have a winter exhibition at TVC to display work from the drawing days and other works. That's enough from me for this month. Looking forward to TSE and OS now.
