Art Scam (from Art Web) Unfortunately there is an increasing number of scammers or con artists operating on the internet and all artists selling their artwork through the internet should be aware of this. However the scammers are usually fairly easy to spot Why Scam Artists? Certainly most people with an address will have received some sort of scam at least once, perhaps a fake 'online banking confirm login details' message or an 'urgent fraudulent use of your account warning'. Also people trading online are susceptible to a certain style of scam and artists selling online fall in to this category. Additionally many artists may not have other experience of selling goods online and so are perhaps seen as a less educated target. How Do Scam/Fraudulent s Work? There are a variety of common techniques that scammers use. Specific To Artists The most common scam affecting artists selling online is as follows: The scam is usually from a web mail address (Yahoo etc.) from someone overseas who asks to buy your art work. They want to send you a check, bankers draft or credit card number to pay for the art. The payment they give you is for the cost of the art work and the cost of shipping overseas. They will quickly ask you to send the overpayment to them or their 'shipping agent'. So they essentially get you to send them money before you discover the payment is fraudulent. General Fraudulent s You may already be aware of a lot of these, but can include techniques such as PayPal/Online Banking Login 'Phishing'; Nigerian 419er; Stock Trading How To Identify A Scammer Scammers are usually quite easy to spot if you are aware of the common tricks: The offer sounds too good to be true (e.g., 'buyer' wants to purchase a number of items at once); The has grammatical mistakes or is written in poor English; There is a sense of urgency in the message; There is some special arrangement requested (e.g., special shipping agent); You are asked to send money/pay in some form (e.g., shipping fee, transaction fee). Remember, it is you that is selling the item!; The address is from yahoo/hotmail or other major webmail account. Something doesn't feel quite right (trust your instincts!)
6 Page 6 Steampunk, Wind-Ups, Wires, And Wheels By Marjorie Sarnat Contemporary artists have discovered and embraced the aesthetic qualities of metal contraptions of the past. Steampunk The word Steampunk refers to a design style used in science fiction that is set in the late 19th Century. The romanticized Victorian steam-powered or mechanical technology of this era produced artfully crafted, intricate metal items such as pocket watches, swiveling telescopes, navigation gear, curious corsets, complex things made from springs, gears, and wires, and whimsical contraptions of every imaginative kind. Contemporary artists often take items from past industries (steam power) and deconstruct and re-imagine them (punk) in clever assemblages, jewelry, as still-life subjects, and as fantasy compositions. Bottle caps, clock workings, screws, wind-up keys, recycled metal ephemera, and so forth are incorporated into their artworks. Mechanical Relics Mechanical things from days gone by make intriguing subject matter for art because they imply human activity and have historic tales to tell. Don t think of them as purely utilitarian without beauty; they often have graceful lines, rich weathered surfaces, and mellowed colors. Consider old eggbeaters, typewriters, dial telephones, wind-up clocks, wind-up toys, vintage metal robots, antique cars, foot treadle sewing machines, and anything your grandparents or their grandparents may have used. Scope out swap meets, antique fairs, your great aunt's attic, garage sales and more for lovely aged props to paint. Automata Life-like metal and cloth wind-up figures from the Victorian era were called "automata." Men in top hats ride a see-saw, ladies in bustles walk small dogs, or a Pierrot clown plays a cello. Automata figures usually had elaborately detailed bases, showed ironic humor, and were intricate works of art. See Jaquet Droz The Writer Automaton: Awesome Antique Android for one amazing example. For additional visual inspiration, see Martin Scorsese's movie, Hugo. The movie is filled with wonderful automata and Steampunk imagery. Finally, the Italian designer, Pierro Fornasetti ( ) is associated with the exciting Steampunk style, as well. Today, with solid-state electronics that have few moving parts, the trend of evoking mechanical movement has found a strong appeal to artists and art lovers alike. Marjorie is the author of the Art Studio Secrets series of books, available in paperback and ebook formats. Her website is Newfangled Notions by Marjorie Sarnat This painting incorporates acrylic transfers over an abstract background, with collage scraps, painted bottle caps, and antique ephemera melded to the surface.
7 Page 7 The Power of Beauty Book Report: Bettany Hughes' Helen of Troy By Norm Beal Most of us older than four decades or so were taught that the works of Homer were classic epics based upon myths, if they were mentioned at all. However, evidence is tenaciously growing that the narrative is based upon not only actual events, but actual individuals. In her extensively-researched book, Bettany Hughes provides an entertaining exploration of this subject: "Discourses on the power and meaning of beauty have been mussed over since the advent of the written word. Sappho, Plato and St. Augustine all put their minds to the thorny question of where beauty came from, what it meant and what it is for. In Greek thought, everything had a purpose. It was an active, independent reality, not a passive and nebulous quality that came into being only once it was discerned. "The value of beauty, and specifically of that of Helen, was analyzed publicly by some of the greatest thinkers in classical Greece. Her beauty was believed to have been spellbinding, an assertation that, in a superstitious age carried worrying weight. As an animate attribute, pulchritude needed to be quantified, evaluated and monitored, and as a result Kallisteia, beauty contests, were an important fixture throughout Greece. There were competitions where the format sounds remarkably similar to modern-day Miss World events. "Winning such a contest could indeed be a matter of religious importance, since it was presumed that beauty was both a gift of the Gods and a pleasure to them. IN some contests, the winners because prime celebrants in a public religious ritual. The ancients found in Helen the perfect tool to explore the notion that the origins of desire are in the seen, and also of the terrible power that beauty can wield. It was thought by many that Kalos (beauty) and agathos (goodness) were inextricably linked, that a perfect face was a patina of a perfect spirit. "It would take hundreds of centuries for Greek Eros to become Roman Cupid a cheeky, impish little putta. For the Greeks, particularly the early Greeks, Eros, born out of Chaos, is something far more pernicious. Forget the plump little baby and think instead of a malevolent, rengy boy. For the ancient Greeks, Aphrodite and Eros catalyse a crazed, keening frenzy for lust, and lust for frenzy. "Being beautiful was an overt goal for the Spartans, for instance, who, rejecting material fripperies, fetished the natural beauty of the unadorned human body. It was said that physical beauty was admired in Sparta above all other attributes. "We cannot say what actual value beauty had in late Bronze Age Greece,, how a beautiful woman, for instance, was assessed or what she was thought to be worth; but the importance of outward show and of material culture is selfevident, the rulers loved and invested in bright, beautiful things. To associate oneself with beauty was a mark of success and power." The Love of Helen and Paris by Jacques-Louis David (oil on canvas, 1788, Louvre, Paris); a love that soon faded, when Helen realized that Paris is not a man of courage and strong character Helen of Troy by Evelyn de Morgan (1898, London); Helen admiringly displays a lock of her hair, as she gazes into a mirror decorated with the nude Aphrodite.
