Agent of change: Keating, 36, heads up the new advocacy wing of youth-oriented North American digital media and broadcasting behemoth Vice Media, finding new ways to encourage millennials to give. As one of four children of former prime minister Paul Keating, she is no stranger to seeing the power of making a difference, and has joined a variety of philanthropic boards. She relocated to New York in From the operating theatre to the TV studio, the Paris runways to a hectic campaign office. The achievers in our Woman of the Year portfolio have radically different daily realities, but they share a drive to leave the world better than they found it. This year, in association with Cartier, we salute the trailblazers, the activists and the shaker-uppers we admire for their transformative talents, their tenacity and their flat-out refusal to accept the injustices of the status quo. This was their year, but watch this space for what they re bringing about for the future. By Georgina Safe If there s anything remotely positive that s come out of the Harvey Weinstein Hollywood horror story, it s that the women who have accused the mogul of harassment or assault found the courage to make their experience public for the sake of those who may have followed them and suffered the same fate. The first wave of whistleblowers caused a domino effect and the stories poured out and despite these actors risking being labelled hysterics or fantasists (and killing their careers in the process), the sisterhood won out. What unfolded last month is proof that women have realised numbers can effect real change. With any big change comes fierce debate and uncertainty, but change can be a powerful force for improving ourselves and the world. This has undoubtedly been the year of the campaigner, so for our 2017 Woman of the Year portfolio, we felt it timely to celebrate the Agents of Change. These are women creating a new paradigm. From campaigners for marriage equality and increased representation of female surgeons, to entrepreneurs pioneering better ways to manage workplaces and look after the environment, these women demonstrate that if you step outside the norm and set about altering an entrenched way of thinking, the results can be spectacular. Take Sally Rugg, GetUp! s marriage equality campaign director, who has been at the forefront of the Yes campaign throughout the protracted process. It seems such a simple concept: that every human deserves to be in a loving relationship that is recognised as being of equal worth. But it hasn t proved to be that way, with the same-sex marriage survey becoming one of the most divisive issues faced by Australian society ahead of the results, due November 15. We also salute the work of cardiothoracic surgeon Dr Nikki Stamp and television journalist Samantha Armytage, who have both risen to the top of traditionally male-dominated industries and are now using their profiles to inspire us to aim higher and hold ourselves to better standards. Which brings us to Katherine Keating, the daughter of a former prime minister, who is reimagining the face of philanthropy by engaging with millennials on media platform Vice. If there s a takeaway from this story, it s Keating s advice to all of us to identify our true passions and follow them, wherever they may lead. We all have a journey we should be going on, she says. I would advise all women to be motivated to discover what they are passionate about, and then trust in their ability to find their dream job or vocation. Agent of change: The two-time Archibald Prize winner, 44, champions an honest and complex representation of women s sexuality, relationships and fertility through her paintings and films. She will be celebrated in the largest ever exhibition devoted to her work to date when Del Kathryn Barton: The Highway is a Disco opens at the National Gallery of Victoria on November 17. 3 THE ACTIVIST SALLY RUGG Occupation: GetUp! marriage equality campaign director. Agent of change: Rugg, 29, is a LGBTIQ activist and the organising force behind the push for same-sex marriage and the Yes campaign in Australia. She has spent four and a half years on the marriage-equality campaign (two years fighting off the plebiscite) and fought passionately to save the Safe Schools Coalition, which supports teachers and schools in the creation of a more inclusive environment for LGBTIQ students and their families. Duckie Thot DUCKIE THOT Occupation: model. Agent of change: Thot, 22, was born Nyadak Thot in Melbourne to parents who migrated from South Sudan, and got her big break on cycle eight of Australia s Next Top Model. She moved to New York a year ago, having been outspoken about struggling to find work as a black model in Australia. She s certainly not short of work now: she walked in several big shows during New York fashion week in September, including Fenty x Puma, Rihanna s collaboration with the sportswear brand; she stars in the campaign for Fenty Beauty, RiRi s newly launched makeup line; and appears alongside fellow Australian model Adut Akech in the 2018 Pirelli Calendar. ADUT AKECH Occupation: model. Agent of change: Akech (full name Adut Akech Bior) was born in South Sudan and migrated to Adelaide as a refugee when she was a child. Her runway debut was in a small fashion show in the city; last year she walked in her first Paris fashion week, and she recently closed the Saint Laurent S/S 2018 show, after shooting the 2018 Pirelli Calendar as part of an all-black all-star cast including Lupita Nyong o. A passionate advocate for increased diversity in the modelling industry, the 17-year-old recently took to Instagram to proclaim, It makes me happy to see how diverse the modelling industry is becoming in Australia. 4 THE CAMPAIGNER DR NIKKI STAMP Occupation: Cardiothoracic surgeon. Agent of change: Dr Stamp is one of only 11 female cardiothoracic surgeons in the country. She is part of the #Ilooklikeasurgeon social media movement to provide female role models for aspiring female surgeons, and she is a strong advocate for women s health. 5 Occupation: founder, Auguste The Label. Agent of change: Eagles s Byron Bay-based brand donates 1 per cent of annual sales to environmental causes through 1% for the Planet. Since launching in 2014, the brand has grown into a multimilliondollar global concern despite being based in a rural area, and Eagles, 35, is committed to employing locals whenever possible, encouraging upskilling and funding traineeships. The 22-strong workforce has just one male, and Eagles is proud of her female-friendly approach to business. 6 KATHERINE KEATING My career is driven by a highest and best use proposition. Everyone knows what they are good at and where they can add the most value in their lives and in other people s lives. I wanted to pursue a career where I could have the greatest positive social impact. There are many ways to do that, whether it s politics, institutions or charities, but I found myself at Vice because I felt that s where I could best bring my skills and relationships to the table. Vice Impact is a platform that looks at all the content we create across the network and the issues we address, and then narrows down on the things we as an organisation think are most important and then builds impactful plays across that. It s not a cookie-cutter approach about what philanthropy should look like. It s very intuitive. Philanthropy is an industry that has to evolve and change, because so much of it is still built on very archaic principles like doing fundraisers and running around asking the same pool of people to give to every single cause that everyone cares about. With us, the focus is trying to move our audience emotionally with our content, then calling on them to take a personal action that will move the needle on a particular issue. We say, If this is something you care about, then this is something you can do about it. Millennials really understand the power of their spending dollar, and they will use it to support a brand aligned with something they care about. SAMANTHA ARMYTAGE I have a burning desire to not let the bastards win. I love meeting everyday Australians, sharing their stories and helping where I can. My biggest challenge has been retaining my femininity in a highly masculine industry. I m proud that I ve handled the politics in my industry and around my job with grace and that I ve ignored the distractions to focus on just making good TV. Things have changed a lot since I was a young journo, but they still have a long way to go. There is more of a sisterhood now. The older women are more nurturing and supportive towards the younger women and seemingly less threatened. But it s a competitive industry, based on ratings. It s not for sissies. I choose my battles with my male bosses. I get up at 3am, so I have to use my energy in the right directions. If I feel I should do the political interview of the day or that things in the office are unbalanced, I speak up. And they listen. But I don t complain about every little thing, cause then I d be boring. Not to mention exhausted. EBONY EAGLES I always knew it wouldn t be just about fashion. Fashion is just the vessel that has allowed me to contribute to helping make the world a better place. Through 1% for the Planet we have pledged to donate 1 per cent of our annual sales to two charities: the Orangutan Land Trust, which preserves forests where orangutans exist or have existed, and the Australian Marine Conservation Society, which protects ocean wildlife. All the 1% for the Planet charities are earth-based, which makes a lot of sense to us as a company, because if you are utilising the world s resources, you should be doing something to replenish them. It s a really exciting time for me now because I ve always wanted to get the company to the point where it could do something to give back rather than be just about selling clothes. In the beginning, I was driven by wanting to succeed as a young woman in the business world, but now I m definitely more driven by being a good role model to my two children and teaching them to be humble and decent people. We support our staff who show talent and initiative through continued education as their confidence grows they hold their heads up higher and this confidence flows into every aspect of their lives. JESS HATZIS & BREE JOHNSON HATZIS: We started Frank Body with our co-founders Alex [Boffa] and Steve [Rowley; Erika Geraerts has since left the company] because there was a lot of hyperbole in the beauty industry and we wanted to create a product that was simpler, more effective and more affordable. We wanted a brand that would cut through a lot of the BS consumers are much smarter than they are given credit for. JOHNSON: When we launched in 2013, we were a self-funded startup, so we didn t have a huge marketing budget and had to find smarter ways to work instead. Back then, there weren t a lot of brands using social media to communicate with their customers, so we were able to really stand out by using Instagram to drive brand awareness and sales via a cost-effective online platform. I am part of #Ilooklikeasurgeon, a global social media campaign designed to dispel myths about what women in a particular occupation, in this case my industry, should look like. Only 9.6 per cent of surgeons in Australia are women, and in my speciality it s even less: just under 6 per cent. We are talking about very small numbers, yet in Australia over half our medical graduates are female, so there is a huge gap there, and I think a lot of people, whether that s patients or other health professionals, still expect their surgeon to be a white middleaged man. We are slowly getting more visible female role models to show women they can become surgeons and pursue an intense but incredibly satisfying career. SALLY RUGG When I realised I was gay, I was 19 and suddenly felt the big wide world I was just stepping into would now be hostile, and that the rest of my life would be hard. This experience is shared by so many LGBTIQ people, but the truth is it s not true at all! I want to make sure every young person discovering who they are and who they will love feels they are welcome, valued and loved. I believe Australian society would be safer, happier and more welcoming for young people if our relationships and identities are treated equally under the law. I have been working on [the marriage equality] campaign for years, but I couldn t have imagined how much of a toll this protracted public debate would take on LGBTIQ people and their families. But I am focused on the goal and the victory. DEL KATHRYN BARTON Living to the greatest of one s capacity today, the one thing more than anything else you need to be able to cope with and adapt to is perpetual change. I m good at being open to things changing quickly and not being terrified by that, and I m able to think calmly and courageously when things are tough. I ve always been at peace with contradiction and dichotomy because I think all truth systems are ultimately paradoxical: we live in a polemical world and I draw strength from that. Although a lot of the narrative beats in my work are about creating worlds that are beyond the real, ultimately I see myself as an artist who draws inspiration directly from life. The state of being a woman informs my work more than anything else, and the radical change that occurs when women enter the pregnant body and then the mothering body. I feel seriously exhilarated when I think about the challenge and hardship of that, but at the same time the generosity and energy you d never imagined possible that comes of that once you ve committed to that journey. That is what I live for. Apparently, as an artist, I m living the dream, but the dream at times can feel like a nightmare. Pursuing a life as a professional creative is harder than I would have thought possible, but I am deeply grateful to be on this road. I am constantly thinking, Am I making the right choices for the integrity of the work and the integrity of myself? But the bottom line is I m so grateful to be doing what I love. The NGV show means everything. It s my first survey show in a major institution, so I feel the stakes have never been higher. ADUT AKECH I love a lot of things about what I do, but the travelling tops everything, as I get to see new cultures and [keep] learning. One of my biggest challenges has been completing school and modelling at the same time, and although the process was tiring, I wouldn t replace it. One of many things that make my heart tangle is homelessness, and I am passionate about trying to tackle such an overlooked issue. For me, as a person who loves what I do and is determined to go further, what the future holds is endless. DUCKIE THOT My career took off when I moved to New York. It s only been a year and my life has changed! It s tough being a black woman, and I can honestly say it took me some time to learn how to love myself and the skin I m in. This drives me every day; if I can continue to challenge the norm of what it means to be beautiful, I m helping a beautiful little black girl somewhere out there.
