2 SkinMatters Page 2 CLEAR AND CONFIDENT J E F F R E Y S A S S M A N N S H A U S E N, M D One of the most common skin conditions, and one of the most frustrating, is acne. As a dermatologist, I am annoyed by the large numbers of acne products that are on the market that promise to get rid of unsightly blemishes but whose claims have no scientific proof. I am just as aggravated by how many consumers put their trust in a TV commercial, an internet post, or their sister s best friend s cousin selling skin care. Though as it is said, If it is on the internet or TV, it must be true. Really? At Three Rivers Dermatology and Windy Ridge Skin Care Centre, we have tried to make clear the realistic expectations of these products through education. It has been an uphill battle because many people believe what is on TV or the internet over the personalized care and recommendations of their dermatologist. What do we know about acne? Acne is a common but complex skin malady of teenagers and adult females. Adult males DO suffer from acne too, but it is not as common as in adult females. There is neither a quick fix nor a silver bullet in treating acne. There is no magic cocktail of medications that treats everyone. There are excellent prescription medications which can OVER TIME, clear the complexion. continued on page 3...
3 SkinMatters Page 3...Clear and Confident continued. But I got better using Proactiv. The one redeeming property of these acne products is that they recommend developing a daily routine. The daily regimen of cleansing and moisturizing does wonders for anyone s skin. The ingredients in these over-the-counter products are not miracle workers, however. They are old-fashioned, inexpensive products that will help the face. Unfortunately, they are often harsh on the skin and cause irritation, or the concentration of the product is decreased to a level where they are ineffective. BUT, you do cleanse your face twice a day and apply a moisturizing lotion with this routine which are important steps in any skin care regimen! 5 SkinMatters Page 5 HEALTHY HABITS FOR COLLEGE Sending those high school graduates off to college? We know the first year can be mind-boggling for both students and parents. After all, transitioning to college requires a tremendous amount of preparation, adaptation and discipline. Students are on their own for the first time, and parents are forced to step back and let them make their own mistakes. But, there has to be a way to survive freshman year, right? You bet there is! The key is maintaining balance in everything work, play, sleep and even food! Read on to discover tips for a successful first year of college. GET YOUR Zzzzz's We all know the importance of sleep for optimal health. Proper sleep makes you look and feel better. It also heightens performance levels. So skip the school-night partying, turn off the TV and smartphone, and get a full night s sleep. EXERCISE Coupled with appropriate amounts of sleep, exercise helps you look and feel great! It also fights stress and wards off disease. Simply take a 30-minute brisk walk each evening it will even help minimize the dreaded Freshmen 15!!
6 SkinMatters Page 6 EAT HEALTHY A big part of maintaining your health is making healthy food choices. Skip the pizza and opt for veggies, whole grains, fruit and lean protein. USE ON-CAMPUS SUPPORT Disorganization, stress, time management, or tutoring whatever your struggle, you re not alone. Most universities provide counselors, study groups, tutoring and assistance with stress management. Take advantage of these resources. GET INVOLVED ON CAMPUS Getting homesick is a common issue for first-year students. Consider joining one of the many student organizations available at your school such as fraternities and sororities or sports teams. You will meet new people and feel more connected to your school. PRIORITIZE YOUR LIFE Waiting until the last minute to write that essay or cram for a midterm won t cut it in college. Buy a calendar, write your deadlines for assignments, studying, etc., and stick to it! Most importantly, give it your all, be true to yourself and call your mother! Good luck!
7 J U LSkinMatters Y 2020, VOL 1, ISSUE 5 Page 7 Fall 2018 ushers in the BRIGHT and BOLD This article is just for you! We haven t waved goodbye to the year s fave season yet, but in typical end-of-summer fashion, we have started daydreaming of what is ahead -- warm, brilliant colors that paint the fading green leaves and complement a growing desire to cozy up to cooler temperatures and earlier sunsets. Usually fall color trends lean toward a more classic, neutral palette, but this year bright and bold is the name of the game. If you would like to introduce a little color into your life this fall, we ve given you some lively ideas below. Lovely Lavender Lavender looks gorgeous brushed on your eyelids, but wherever you wear it, you will exude a sense of calm and serenity. Lean on lavender in your wardrobe, too, with a simple purple dress or add a pop of color to an LBD (little black dress) with lavender earrings or an eye-catching lavender belt. Radiant Red Red lips are never out of place, of course. But this fall, you can rock red lips and know you re on trend (high-five!). Glide on cherry-red polish to make your fingernails and any outfit pop. Strike your boldest note and try your rosy lips with a bright blue dress, or pair your pucker punch with a tan and white combination. Yes to Yellow A bright addition to the fall color trends, we love seeing splashes of sunshine in everyone s wardrobe. Shoes make styling up a snap! Try yellow heels (or flats! We re all about practicality!). Your accessory options are endless with this happy hue. Whatever you wear, just switch it out for yellow flair! 8 SkinMatters Page 8 WHY YOUR GUT HEALTH IS EVERYTHING Most disease begins in the gut. Hippocrates even knew the importance of gut health more than 2,500 years ago. Talk about keeping or restoring a good gut seems to be everywhere these days and science has embarked on a flurry of research into the topic. It is clear, however, that gut health affects everything in your body, including the health of your skin, your mood, your digestion, and it can even trigger or prevent disease. Below, we have outlined some easy steps you can take to improve your gut. Here is our challenge to you: Once you have read the article, make changes right away. It is easy to say to yourself, I ll look into this later. Take action before your brain can interfere with that decision. TAKE A QUALITY PROBIOTIC Probiotic supplements should contain 5 to 10 billion CFUs (colony forming units). Encapsulated pills are the best form of probiotic because they help the bacteria survive the acid within your stomach. A wide range of bacteria strains is best because each strain benefits different areas of the body. Probiotics are not for everyone and should not be a replacement for regular healthcare checkups. Always consult your primary care physician before starting a probiotic. Continued on page 9...
9 SkinMatters Page 9...Gut Health Continued Eat Less Refined Sugar Refined sugar, specifically added fructose, has a bad rap for many reasons, and gut health is one of them. Refined sugar helps promote the growth of bad bacteria in the gut and can cause inflammation as well. Reducing the amount of refined sugar you eat will do wonders for your body overall, so we can t stress enough the importance of cutting the sweet stuff! Stress Less Easier said than done, we know! But there is a reason stress is called the silent killer. Its effects are widespread within your body, and the gut is one place where stress can wreak havoc. Instead of focusing on its negative effects, try looking for simple ways to reduce your stress. Ironically, stressing about stress is not good for you either! These ideas will lower your stress: Meditation. Practice makes perfect, so try it several times before deciding if it s right for you. Exercise. Physical activity lifts your mood as it lowers your stress levels. If you can t get to a gym, that s okay. Just try walking for a half an hour, get active outside in the garden or go for a run with your dog. Laughter. Laughing releases endorphins in your brain that are critical to improving stress. If your partner isn t as funny as he/she thinks, turn on a show or movie to get your happy tears rolling. Making an active choice to reduce stress will help immensely. When you choose to handle tense situations with a lighter attitude, your stress will start to melt away. You will retrain yourself how to react in a manner that leads to a more peaceful existence. 11 SkinMatters Page 11 Beef and Blue Cheese Penne with Pesto Total Time: 30 minutes Servings: 4 The Ingredients 2 cups uncooked whole wheat penne pasta 2 beef tenderloin steaks (6 ounces each) 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 5 ounces fresh baby spinach (about 6 cups), coarsely chopped 2 cups grape tomatoes, halved 1/3 cup prepared pesto 1/4 cup chopped walnuts 1/4 cup crumbled Gorgonzola cheese The Directions 1. Cook pasta according to package directions. 2. Meanwhile, sprinkle steaks with salt and pepper. Grill steaks, covered, over medium heat or broil 4 in. from heat 5-7 minutes on each side or until meat reaches desired doneness. (for medium-rare, a thermometer should read 135 ; medium, 140 ; medium-well, 145 ). 3. Drain pasta; transfer to a large bowl. Add spinach, tomatoes, pesto and walnuts; toss to coat.
