3 Zen Beard Facial Welcome! I am so excited to show you these amazingly simple and effective manual techniques that combine my three favorite passions - Yoga, Skincare & Massage to provide a holistic, therapeutic and results-oriented Beard Facial that will set you apart from any other skincare specialist. Beards are a super-hot trend right now and this technique can be added to your menu tomorrow!! My Zen Beard Facial involves manipulating the beard, skin, fascia, lymph, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles and bones of the face, scalp, posterior, lateral and anterior neck, and shoulders. These techniques will vacillate between being structured and unstructured, stationary and moving, speed and depth, warm and cold, pinning and stretching, moving across the muscle fibers to shorten (cross fiber) and with the muscle to lengthen (linear). We will be learning and using vibration, scraping (Gua Sha) pinching (pincement), squeezing (petrissage), lifting and pulling (cupping), rolling and pressing (lymph), rolling and lifting (muscle), rhythm and pressure (acupressure), and gliding (effleurage) techniques. The theory behind this Beard Facial is that performing isotonic (tension with movement) and isometric (tension with no movement) exercises on the face will strengthen and tone the underlying structure. You will learn the appropriate amount of pressure to specific points activates the Central Nervous System (CNS) controls most the functions of the body and mind. When these specific reflexes are stimulated, it sends a message from the peripheral nerves to the CNS, which in turn, signals the body to adjust the tension levels. A relaxed state allows internal organs to achieve a state of optimal functioning, it increases blood supply (circulatory), respiratory, endocrine, immune, and neuropeptides (chemicals that regulate cellular communication) function to facilitate healing at all levels. 6 ZEN BEARD FACIAL INDICATIONS Who needs a Beard Facial? This beard is extremely beneficial for any person with a beard. It is especially good for men with congested pores, folliculitis, beard itch, ingrown hairs, dandruff, dry skin and acne. What is the purpose of the Beard Facial? The purpose is to more thoroughly cleanse, sanitize and condition the beard. Exfoliate the skin underneath, mobilize and reduce congestion in the pores, relax jaw tension, strengthen and tone facial muscles, stimulate collagen, and of course, provide relaxation. Should some men NOT get a Beard Facial? Yes!! Just like with any client do a thorough health intake form. CONTRAINDICATIONS Broken facial bones, contagious conditions, viruses such as cold, cold sores (herpes), warts, bacterial infections, boils, conjunctivitis, styes, fungal infections, ringworm, undiagnosed lumps, known sensitivities or allergy to products, nasal cannula, bleeding disorders, burns or healing wounds, stoma, reactive eczema, psoriasis, inflamed rosacea, open sores or lesions, nose bleeding, facial cancer, cold sores, head lice, under the influence of drugs or alcohol, sunburn, blood thinners (Gua Sha) or severe acne. Severe cardiac or renal failure, severe edema, hemophilia, leukemia, allergic dermatitis, Lupus (active), edema following carcinoma treatment, thyroid dysfunction, chronic inflammation, bronchial asthma, cancer, uncontrolled hyper or hypotension (unstable blood pressure) The Zen Institute: Zen Beard Facial - by Cheryl Miller Page 6

8 ZEN BEARD FACIAL Step by Step 1. Place your client under steam. Preferably an Ozone Steamer to help kill bacteria. The warmth increases the eliminative, detoxing and cleansing capacity of the skin via the Sudoriferous, and Sebaceous glands to all for increased ozone absorption. It relieves stress, and improved immune system. The steam is also beneficial for hydrating the hair, improved blood flow (vasodilation) promotes hair growth and lifts the hair cuticle allowing products to penetrate deeply into the hair shaft to heal and repair. If you do not have a steamer, place under steamed towels for a few minutes. 2. Apply your favorite cleanser. I recommend low-foam cleanser. It can be a challenge to get all the soap out if there is too much Sodium Laureth Sulfate (foaming surfactants). 3. Massage product in the beard and over the face (See Zen Facial Massage, page 9) 4. Steam Towel Accupressure technique to remove product. (See Steam Towel Accupressure, page 11). 5. Apply serum or enzymes prior to High Frequency. 6. High Frequency Comb (See High Frequency, page 12). 7. Distribute/massage product over the skin and beard. 8. Gua Sha Technique (See Gua Sha, page 13). 9. Use steam towel to remove product. 10. Apply Conditioning Beard Balm or oil 11. Repeat Massage sequence adding in neck massage 12. Repeat Steam Towel Accupressure Technique 13. Spritz on toner to balance ph 14. 9 ZEN FACIAL MASSAGE Step-by-Step Pincement squeeze the base of the beard between your fingers and drag down to the tip for a deep clean and to stimulate mobilization in the hair follicles and pores. Finger Circles Using just the tips of your fingers press firmly against the skin to release muscle tension and exfoliate. Moving from the Masseter to Mandible. Speed Bag Rapid rolling technique below and above the jaw bone release tension in the muscles, stimulate collagen and soften/mobilize congestion in the pores/follicles. Rake With stiff fingers in a claw position firmly drag finger tips as close to the skin as possible. The will help release tension, exfoliate, and mobilize congestion. Figure 8 Position finger tips (palm up) under neck for support. Firmly massage above the jaw bone using your thumb Cross Fiber and Linear Friction Soften 11 s across the Glabella by moving in the opposite direction of the muscle (cross fiber) and encourage tissue to relax and lay flat with linear friction. Repeat on crows feet. Forehead Compression Circles - starting in the center of the forehead and moving laterally to temples using firm pressure with the heel of your hand to relieve tension. Eye Circles - Firm circles on the superior edge of Orbicularis Oculi. Soft pressure underneath to flush lymph, waste and swelling. Soft knuckle massage on Pectoralis Major/Minor Release tension, improve posture and breathing. Keep arms straight and engage core. Pressure to tolerance. Thumb slide across Trapezius with compression Rest fingertips (palm down) on chest and apply firm pressure along Traps, Levator, and Scalenes. Cervical spine (milking) Place hands under next (palms up). Alternate hands (milking) with firm pressure from base of neck to suboccipital ridge. Traction and lengthen muscles and relieve tension. Suboccipital Traction: Place hands under neck (palms up) and firmly slide finger tips to suboccipital ridge to traction and lengthen cervical spine, release muscle tension, headaches, and allow synovial fluid to lubricate vertebrae. 10 EAR REFLEXOLOGY Step-by-Step Reasons for an ear massage vary. In Eastern medicine, the outer portion of the ear is viewed as a microsystem representing the entire body. As with other forms of reflexology, points on the ear correspond with specific areas of the body; consequently, massage of these points can produce therapeutic benefits, increase relaxation, decrease tension and promote overall wellbeing. 1. Fan your fingers out into the hair beneath the ears, with the thumbs resting behind the ear. Begin lightly stroking both ears simultaneously with the thumbs. Work from the lobe of each ear upward to the tip. The pads of the fingers may gently massage the scalp at the same time. Continue this until you have covered the ear from lobe to tip three times. 2. Move to the bottom of the ears. Gently press the earlobes between the pads of the thumbs and the first two fingers. Alternately press and roll the earlobes for several seconds and you pull down toward the shoulder. Pressure points in the earlobes correspond with the head and neck regions. The technique and help relieve headaches. Repeat three times. 3. Next, move up along the outer edges of the ears (4-10) pausing to repeat this pressing and rolling action and covering the entire edge gently pulling the outer ear down toward the table. This technique will help clear congested Eustachian tubes to improve hearing and balance. Pressure points along the edges of the ears coincide with the shoulders, elbows, wrists, feet and ankles. Repeat this process three times. 4. Lastly, move along the top outer edge of the ear and continue to press and roll while gently pull toward the crown of the head. Repeat 3x. 5. Next, place both hand against the head (finger tips toward the feet) Use the palm of the hand to cover the ear. Press at the same with firm pressure and hold 3 seconds. Slowly release, you will hear a suction. Repeat three times. This technique will also help with hearing and balance. Pressure points here coincide with specific internal organs and hunger control. 11 STEAM TOWEL ACUPRESSURE Step by Step Place steamed towels on décolleté and face Repeat this series 3 times: 1. Chest Compressions - Starting below the Clavicle place palms or soft fists (knuckle side down). Use your body to press and release quickly and firmly. Pressure moves downward. Begin medial at the sternum and move laterally to the shoulders. (Pec Major/Min) *Keep your arms extended and lean forward with your body weight. 2. Shoulders - Press your thumbs superior and parallel to the clavicle and use your body to press and release quickly and firmly. (Platysma) 3. Jaw squeeze - Squeeze firmly as your move medial (Masseter) to lateral (TMJ) with your index finger below the jaw bone and thumb above the jaw bone 4. Jaw circles - Anchor your hands under neck and use firm thumb pressure or use the heel of your hands bilaterally along the masseter and buccinator. 5. Zygomatic Lift - Curl tips of all four fingers under zygomatic bone and lift up and release several times to release and drain lower sinus cavity. 6. Temple Circles - Using the heel of your hands, press firmly into the temple and slowly circle. Trigger point to relieve headaches. 7. Forehead Roll Out - Place thumbs together, palms down. Roll your hand medial to lateral firmly across the forehead. 8. Chopping Prayer - Place palms together and gently chop across the forehead. 9. Lymph Flush to finish - Roll from the heel of your hand to your fingertips starting at the forehead and moving to chest. 10. 12 HIGH FREQUENCY COMB How High Frequency Works: Alternating electrical current is generated by the high frequency machine which then passes through the attached glass electrode upon contact with the skin. This contact ignites the inner gas within the electrode which produces healing electrical light energy and unstable oxygen which instantly converts in purifying ozone. The exchange causes subtle warming of the beard and tissue and causes very safe and natural contraction of the underlying blood vessels and tiny muscle groups. Vasodilation flushes toxin and allows for improved nutrient and oxygen uptake. The difference between orange and violet electrodes: Violet Argon gas Best for acne Orange Neon gas Best for aging skin, scalp and hair Benefits: Promotes healthy hair growth Warms hair to increase product absorption Accelerates cellular turnover Improves Oxygenation Decongests Enhance Blood Circulation Stimulate Collagen production Eliminates bacteria Softens Fine Lines and Wrinkles and loose skin Decreases puffiness Precautions for High Frequency: NOT recommended for use with Glycolic Acid. 13 HIGH FREQUENCY Step-by-Step 1. Apply your favorite Enzyme, BHA, or serum to clean face and beard. 2. Use the High Frequency comb attachment to Rake thru beard from base to tip to thoroughly and evenly distribute product for 1-2 minutes. GUA SHA The practice of Gua Sha comes from Traditional Chinese Medicine and dates back over 700 years to the Ming Dynasty ( ) when they used jade stones to scrape the skin all over the body to treat diseases. This process is believed to stimulate blood circulation to the muscles, tissues and organs; detoxing the body of stagnate qi reducing stiffness, pain and increasing mobility. The practice of Gua Sha for facials (much gentler than the body therapy and does not cause redness) has recently become more popular. Many have dubbed it the Eastern Face Lift or Eastern Botox, for its abilities to smooth fine lines and wrinkles, plump, tighten and rejuvenate skin; even decrease dark under-eye circles and puffiness. Beard Gua Sha is done at the base of the hair to stimulate blood circulation and detoxification, mobilizing congestion, exfoliates, while relaxing tense muscles that cause wrinkles to form. The term Gua Sha is comprised of two Chinese words: gua, meaning to rub or scrape, and sha, a type of stagnant energy that causes excess heat to build within the body. Taken together, the term Gua Sha means the act of rubbing the skin to remove an energy blockage. According to traditional Chinese medicine theory, by bringing heat to the skin surface, Gua Sha, releases the blocked energy and heat. Benefits: Stimulates blood, lymph and chi flow, flush lactic acid and metabolic waste, collagen synthesis, improves and balances muscle strength and tone, clears sinus and mobilizes pore/follicle congestion, relaxes tight muscles and accelerated cellular turnover, stimulates collagen synthesis and ATP regeneration Great technique for men with Pseudofolliculitis Contraindications: The Zen Institute: Zen Beard Facial - by Cheryl Miller Page 13

14 Though it is one of the safest forms of therapy available, Gua Sha is not appropriate for everyone. BLOOD THINNERS are a major contraindication. Others include leukemia, severe anemia, severe acute cardiovascular or cerebrovascular diseases, acute or chronic infectious diseases, kidney or liver disorders, fresh scars, chronic infections diseases, fever, TB, viral infections, bacterial infections, high risk pregnancy and communicable diseases, Avoid moles and pimples, superficial veins and arteries, open wounds, lesions compromised onion skin. The general health of the person receiving treatment dictates the speed and force of the strokes depends. BEARD GUA SHA Step-by-Step Rub the Enzyme/BHA or Serum into beard, add more if necessary. Note: This technique is done on the beard hair but as close to the face as possible. 1. Apply Enzyme/BHA or Serum to area of treatment--never do DRY 2. Hold the edge of the Gua Sha tool at a 45-degree angle to the skin 3. Rapidly move tool back and forth at the base of the hair shaft to stimulate, warm, tone, mobilize congestion and accelerate exfoliation. 4. Beard Gua Sha pressure and speed to tolerance 5. Do 5-10 strokes about 1 inches long in each spot before moving 6. Thoroughly cover entire beard 7. Can be done under steam 8.
