2 President s Report Hi Everyone! Our 1st of April dance was another great success. A big thanks to 190+ of our members, friends and visitors from all over the state that came to enjoy the dynamic Rockin Daddies. The dance floor was pumping to the unique sound and songs they played for us and your applause on the dance floor drives them even further, so come on spread the love and give the appreciation after each dance. A big thanks to the Rockin Daddies sound engineer Marianne - she does a fabulous job and their sound was a perfect balance for our hall. Party night on 6th of April had a great turn-out of 80 people. They came to enjoy some fun, dancing and yummy food, thank you everyone that gave a plate. Chris and Raelene gave out 56 certificates to all that completed the 1st block of lessons and I must say their style of teaching is very easy to follow. Thank you guys, also thanks to Yvonne for her help with the music on lesson nights. Our 2nd block of lessons started on Thursday 13th of April with a great turnout of 48 on Easter Monday which increased to 64 on the second week. Spread the word to your friends and family and work collegues that want to learn Rock N Roll. Don t forget to take advantage of our Monday socials. It s a great way to practice your moves and meet some new people. We will also be teaching one of our clubs line dances and it s only $3 entry. We have had 2 committee members resign at our April meeting, Adrian Crouch and Faye Gell. Thank you Adrian for finding a simpler way to refine our membership cards. Thank you Faye for your booking and table placement expertise. Hope you both enjoy your holidays up north. Demo s have thinned out a bit now. I ll try to keep it to 1 a month so as not to wear out our dance team. We do need more people to come forward and help with these demos as we only have about 4-5 couples at the moment and we need at least 8-9 couples so we have a back-up for those regulars that can t always make it. Please call me on or SMS if you want to get involved. We do need you so don t be shy and give us some help please! Upcoming demos are listed later on in the newsletter. Our Bunnings sausage sizzle was on last Sunday 23 rd. The weather was perfect and we sold lots of sausages and drinks to the public who were really enjoying our music. A big, big thank you to Denis and Sandy Virgona for the use and delivery of the cool-room and to Peter and Chris Rhodes and Wayne and Marlene Dopper for the lend and delivery of their vinyl dance floor. It made the day so much easier. Thank you also to a great team of helpers that set up, cooked, prepped and sold our goods and packed up. They are Paul & Glenda, Warren & Janet, Keith Sullivan, Dave Warnock, Rob & Leslee, Ray & Pauline, Tim & Vicki, Marie Vella, Lyn Johnson, Coral Lawn and Maria Sanigorski. I Love you all. After expenses we made approximately $1,300 for our amazing charity Geelong Mums, which will be combined with other charity funds to be presented to them at a future dance to be announced at a later date. The 6th of May is our next dance with Who Was that Cat a band not to be missed. They play fabulous dance music and put on a great show. Tell your friends and book your seats through the club phone with Glenda on We will also be celebrating Mother s Day for all the mothers in our club. Hope to see you all there. Spread the Love & Keep on Rockin. Cass x

6 Hi lo Hi lovelies! I m back! As many of you would know I have been growing my hair for the last little while from a pixie cut and I am now having to learn how to manage my shoulder length, fine-but-thick, slightly curly hair and I have made a few discoveries along the way that some of you may find useful. Firstly, I love pin curl sets! I try to avoid using heat on my hair where I can as fine hair is easily damaged and I don t want to lose any of my hard-earned length due to having to cut off damaged ends and pin curl sets are an ideal solution. Here is a quick overview if you have never done one or don t know what they are. Basically, you take sections of damp hair (I usually take sections about an inch square) and roll them around two fingers to create a curl. Be sure to roll the hair flat like a ribbon, don t twist it as you roll or you won t get the vintage look you are after. Make sure the ends are tucked in to the curl, lay the curl flat on your head and pin it securely. I like to use the flat sleepy clips rather than bobby pins as they are easier to manage with damp, slippery fingers, they secure the curl better and are much nicer to sleep with. Once you have curled all your hair in this fashion pop a hair net on until your hair is quite dry (you can do this before bed). Once your hair is dry, remove the hair net and clips and shake the curls out. They are now ready to brush out. I find a plastic bristled brush is best for this. Use the brush and your hands to shape the curls how you like them. Don t worry about brushing them out they will be quite resilient! I like to mould the curls into a page boy type of style but I found that if the day was humid I would be fighting frizz all day. I was just about to give this up as a bad job when I discovered something amazing once you have shaped your style pop the hair net back on. Make sure that the style is still in place and then apply hair spray over the hair net. Leave the hair net on until the hair spray is quite dry you can even dry it gently with the hair dryer to help set the curls then gently remove the hair net. Your hair will be beautifully set with no frizz and for some reason this seems to last much better than just spraying your hair without the net. Another gorgeous tip I discovered lately is to keep your hair moisturised. Dah, right? You wouldn t moisturise your face once a month and expect your skin to stay hydrated, well it s the same with your hair! Aloe Vera is fantastic for this. I use Banana Boat After Sun Aloe Vera spray and it is amazing! Especially good if followed up by an oil such as argan or marula oil to help seal in the moisture. Disclaimer 100% humidity the day after washing your curly hair all bets are off!!! Maintaining your set You should brush out your set every night before bed. The old wives tale of 100 strokes a night is actually quite beneficial. It removes the old hair spray and spreads the natural oils throughout the hair while stimulating the scalp. You shed between 50 and 150 hairs per day brushing helps keep the hair in the hair brush and out of your shower grate. Once you have brushed thoroughly, mould your curls back into place and sleep with your hair net on. You will find that your hair will need very little fixing in the morning. Just a quick brush, mould the curls, back on with the hair net and spray. To wash or not to wash.a bad habit that we have gotten into in recent times is over-washing our hair. And it is just that a habit. There is no reason to wash your hair daily, in fact this will be stripping the natural oils from your hair. In the forties and fifties ladies traditionally washed their hair on Thursday night (yep, once a week!). This was so that the hair had time to settle before Saturday night as many styles do not work well on just washed hair as it is too soft. Quite often you will find that if you brush your hair rather than wash it you will be surprised at just how clean and shiny it actually is. A little talc can help reduce any excess oils - just remember to brush well afterwards. It s old fashioned but I think it s actually better than dry shampoo and way cheaper. As many of you would know I have been growing my hair for the last little while from a

8 Due to upcoming extended holidays three of our ordinary committee members will soon be resigning from committee duties. This is a great opportunity for members to get involved in the running of our great club. We are looking for members with a positive attitude and enthusiasm and willingness to help out. Computer skills and/or previous experience on a committee would be fantastic but not essential. Typical duties might include helping set up before dances and pack up afterwards. Distribution of membership cards (and perhaps take on the role of membership officer?). Take dance bookings. Help out on the door or with the raffle at dances. If you have some of the following skills we d love to hear from you: Business Acumen (have run a business, small, medium or large) Admin skills in an office, accounts payable, Accounts receivable, general admin Government work experience Private enterprise work experience Good Computer Skills in Word or Excel Worked using a Database Project management skills Run a social club before School Committee experience Someone with time to do some day to day running around As these positions would only be for the remainder of the year and would terminate at the AGM, it is a great opportunity to have a go and get a feel for being on the committee without signing on for a whole year. This is a great way to meet your fellow members and make new friends. Even if you would like to help out at dances or social nights but do not wish to come to meetings please let Cass know as any help would be appreciated.
9 Festival News The Committee is about to begin arranging the 2018 festival and we are looking for your assistance. I have volunteered to coordinate this festival as Chris is unavailable as he & Olwyn are doing some extended touring. We are looking for assistance in a number of areas. Initially we are looking for some members to be part of the organising committee so we get balanced point of view on the activities. I will also be approaching members to assist on specific tasks or perform / lead activities on the Sunday. As you all know it takes a lot of work from a big team to put on the festival but it is all with the effort in the end as we have a fantastic time. If you want to assist on the organising Committee please see one of the main committee members or myself. If you have any ideas on how we can improve the festival please send your comments to Cass who is on the organising committee with me. Larry There will be a Rummage Sale to be held on the next Party Night. Everyone is invited to bring along items for sale. We will supply price tags and someone will be available to handle all transactions so you can still go off and enjoy party night. This is a great opportunity to clear out your closet, make a few dollars and maybe pick up a bargain! Typical items would include retro/vintage/rock and roll style: Dresses and skirts Petticoats Hand bags, shoes and belts Shirts Accessories such as jewellery, scarves, hair flowers etc Memorabilia, tin signs, kitsch items
