1 REDLAND MUSEUM RECOLLECTIONS MAY 2015 PRESIDENT S REPORT Our monthly activities are escalating. Apart from the normal visitors described as individuals, families, school groups and seniors groups, last month we had functions and dealings with Rotary Wellington Point, Rotary Cleveland, Probus Cleveland, U3A, students studying our museum practices and delegates from other museums. We have also commenced joint activities with the Men s Sheds at Alexandra Hills and Cleveland. We are truly a community museum. The Family Fun Day was well organised and well attended by our volunteers and the public. It was a great opportunity to encourage visitors who have rarely if ever visited the museum. The museum has also acknowledged our marvelous volunteers by helping organise an enjoyable bus trip to the Abbey Museum and a well-attended and much appreciated Volunteer Lunch. Training for volunteer Customer Service has been initiated and there will now be monthly volunteer training lessons in different aspects of the museum. The Customer Service weekend duty roster seems to be working and has volunteers scheduled two months ahead. This helps everybody involved determine their own activities and still help the museum. Nothing is possible without our dedicated volunteers who maintain a deep pride in the museum. Thank you all! On the topic of dedicated volunteers our Collection Manager has announced he is stepping down because of his health. Life member Mr Peter Robertson, has done a great job for many years in a very important part of the museum. All is not lost however because we have found him a new, less strenuous job. The Management Committee will discuss who will replace Peter at their next Management meeting. The high standard required collecting, preserving, protecting and displaying our artefacts is vital for the trust our members, donors and stakeholders place in us. We are the custodians for future generations. Photo taken of some of our willing volunteers who came to the inaugural training session last month. Part of the training included learning the finer points of weekend reception duty. Of course, everyone passed!

2 CURRENT EXHIBITION LEST WE FORGET WINGS OVER THE REDLANDS This exhibition is the concept of aviation enthusiast and new Museum Member, Terence Hendricks, and has as its core the Flying Boat services operating out of Redland Bay. Also included is the 1942 mid-air collision of two Wirraways over Cleveland, the loss of the Hudson Bomber at Jumpinpin, crop dusting at Cleveland and more... This is Redland Museum s exhibition to commemorate the centenary of the Gallipoli campaign and the Great War. It includes photographs and memorabilia on loan from the Redlands community, the Museum s permanent collection and video footage. These include bronze death plaques, diaries, emu feathers, letters, medals and postcards. FUTURE EXHIBITIONS Special Seniors Remembered A Photographic Tribute This special exhibition in the Dunn Wing celebrates Seniors Week 15th -23rd August. This exhibition is a collaborative effort including volunteers from the Redland Museum, Men s Sheds from Alexandra Hills and Cleveland. It will be launched in the Dunn Wing on 25th October and will be on display until the end of the year. Rick Thomason Volunteer s Week Revisit the photos taken of 221 Seniors who have made a great contribution to the community. A Who s Who of the Redlands. Helping to put together the food for the Volunteer s Thank You lunch last Monday is Annabelle who made the salads and Hein Olivier who BBQ d the sausages. Thanks to Doug Alexander who was a major help, too.

3 Museum Shirts A new order of Museum Shirts will be arriving shortly with longer sleeves for winter. The embroidered shirts are subsidized by the Museum and only cost $25 to volunteers. Please see me if you would like one. Jan Banks Textile News May 2015 We had a great day at our Family Fun Day last month. Our Textile Group ran a Textile Stall, a Raffle and a small book stall but even though our takings were down compared to last year s event it was still a successful day. It is always a pleasure seeing the Museum come alive with all the families and visitors who loved the entertainment, demonstrations and food and it was great seeing them really appreciate our wonderful unique Museum. Many thanks to those who contributed items to the stall with a special thanks to Sue Richards for the beautiful bundles of fresh rosemary she cut and brought down from Mt Mee. finished - this is a sign of a skilled embroiderer. Our thanks go to Graham for this kind donation to the Museum. Jan Banks Volunteers Anne Tully, Jan Banks and Agnes Tardent looking smart and ready for action in their Museum shirts, on duty at the Textiles Display, Family Fun Day WORLD WAR 1 DIARAMA In an on-going project we are busy cataloguing many millinery items donated by a lady who had been a Milliner for 40 years. These items will be used in a Millinery display later in the year. We are currently working on dismantling our Festivals and Shows display and will be exhibiting items for a display relating to World War 1 and other Wars. This is to tie in with Rick Thomason s Exhibition for this year s Centenary of WWI. We have also created a display of beautiful embroidery, crocheting and knitting from some of the many items donated by Graham Everson. These items had been made by his Mother who was self-taught in these skills. The back of the embroidered table centres and duchess sets are very neat and beautifully This amazing and authentic diorama has been designed, constructed and is on loan from local resident Sam Smith, who has been collecting militaria for the past 40 years. His aim is to depict the human side of war - what they wore, what they ate, what they carried in their packs, personal items they used and letters from home. Our grateful thanks go to Sam for allowing us to display this Trench Diorama.

4 Redlands Model Train Group Library Lines May 2015 Thanks to Kath McNeilly the Library now has a new glass cabinet to display precious items from the collection. Thanks to Noel for fitting the wheels. Albums with photos from 1810 to 1920 are on view there this month. There are items about the Great War in the glass cabinet in the main display area. There are many more copies of the magazines The Great War I Was There and World War A Pictured History held in the Library if you would like to browse through these. The Redlands Model Railway Group displayed their layout "Barinia" at the 2015 Brisbane Model Train Show held on the weekend of 9 and 10 May. Members had a great time talking to the visiting public and other exhibitors. Many flyers were given out advertising our coming show in September. Liz Blumson and Sandy Campbell at the Family Fun Day Library staff had a fun time at the Family Fun Day reading stories to the children and raised a considerable amount selling duplicate items from the collection - and honey. Liz Blumson, Honorary Librarian In addition, Alan Collingwood, Eddie Stavleu, and John Burt displayed their layouts at the Brisbane Model Train Show and gave out flyers.
