It s set to move into the former H&M store on Grey Street and will serve up top quality burgers and beer. McDonald s this is not, folks. byronhamburgers.com PURR-FECT CUPPA Newcastle has become the purrrrr-fect place to relax with the opening of not one but two cat cafés in the city. Mog on the Tyne in Pudding Chare and Catpawcino, on the Quayside offer the chance to relax with a cuppa while getting to know a new feline friend. Miaowwwwww! mogonthetyne.com facebook.com/catpawcino BIG BAND NIGHT The Glass House - the new drinks venue on Dean Street - hosts Big Band Thursday on August 6 with music from eight-man jazz/swing/pop/rock combo Boys of Brass. Smooth! glasshousenewcastle.co.uk MARINA MAGIC The NE1 Marina is back in action for the summer, and to celebrate NE1 has teamed up with the North East Maritime Trust to bring a collection of classic boats to the Quayside on August Bank Holiday weekend. The Marina will welcome more than 20 vessels - including the Faramir (1982), one of the largest wooden yachts ever built and the Reaper (1902) - to the Tyne from August 29 to 31, promising a wonderful showcase of maritime history. The event will also feature skiff racing on Sunday, and an exhibition of the boats history on the Quayside. on Twitter and like Get Into Newcastle on Facebook to keep up to date. NE1 Marina August 29-31, free, newcastlecitymarina.co.uk NEVER A DRAG Expect a flamboyant and outrageous show at the O2 Academy as singer and drag artist Adore Delano brings his astonishing punk rock mermaid drag queen act to Newcastle. Having found fame on American Idol and appearing on RuPaul s Drag Race, the raunchy and engaging entertainer s music marries slick pop with dancefloorfilling jams. We bet you ve never seen anything quite like it! O2 Academy, Aug 10, 30, o2academynewcastle.co.uk YOUNG MASTERS The Toon abounds with talented artists this month, as Hatton Gallery plays host to Newcastle University s Master of Fine Art exhibition. Aiming to shine a light on bright new talent, the exhibition presents a range of work across a variety of media from first and second year students. Look out for the next Antony Gormley or Damien Hirst and boast that you spotted them first. Hatton Gallery August 22-September 5, free, hattongallery.org.uk VIEW FROM THE TERRACES WITH NUFC-WATCHER PAUL DIXON Different sounds herald new seasons. It s the lawn mower in summer, while autumn brings the rattle of Prozac being replaced in the medicine cabinet by relieved parents waving off the kids for the new school term. Winter brings Slade and Merry Christmas Everybody while spring is sprung when the Christmas adverts begin again. In football, the sound, as far as Newcastle United is concerned, is the steady hum of revitalised pacemakers and 50,000 sets of darts hitting a picture of Mike Ashley. To say I don t know what the season holds is a massive understatement; hope always trumps expectation, particularly with a new manager. It usually ends in tears, but if you took away the unprecedented optimism you d just end up supporting Chelsea or Man City, and that would be the easy option, which is not the Newcastle way. Still in one cup by March? Success. Winning one cup by May? Hallucinating. Bring it on. blackadderboy@yahoo.co.uk

THE WORLD ACCORDING TO ADAM TELFORD NE1 Street Ranger of the Year I ve been working for NE1 for almost six years as a street ranger, improving Newcastle s city centre. By day, I m the team leader of the clean team, which looks after the fronts of all the businesses in the city and works alongside the city council to ensure the streets and businesses are clean and tidy for the general public and tourists who flock to the Toon. By night however, my job gets a little noisier! I play drums in a metal band called Hellion Rising (pictured), and we ve got a strong local following and often tour across the country. We ve played festivals including Hard Rock Hell in Wales, after coming third out of more than 700 bands in a national competition, and we got to play with legends Blue Oyster Cult and Queensryche. We ve been asked to return this year so we ll be playing with UFO, Helloween, Saxon and my favourite band, Black Label Society. Thankfully, working for NE1 enables me to be very flexible and earn a wage while doing what I love. The band is like my second job, but I love it! facebook.com/hellionrisingofficial
