Brookgreen Gardens: Sept. 23, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Brew at the Zoo, this craft beer tasting will feature over 30 regional and national selections and offers a rare opportunity after-hours to see Brookgreen s Native Wildlife Zoo. Guests receive a signature tasting glass and enjoy a silent auction hosted by The Friends of Brookgreen Gardens. Food and wine are available for purchase. To purchase tickets, please go to: Members are $35, Non- Members are $40 and Designated Drivers are $15. Oct. 1, 3, 5, 10 a.m. to noon & 2 to 4 p.m. Sculpture Public Program, Sculptor in Residence Ken Smith will give a demonstration with commentary at the Campbell Center for American Sculpture. He will demonstrate various carving techniques while he works and will have extra stone and hand tools available for visitors to experience stone carving themselves. Visitors may come and go throughout each day to see how his work progresses, or they may attend one day only but will still get a good experience about what stone carving entails. The program is free with regular admission to Brookgreen Gardens and does not require advance reservation. Oct. 4, 11, 18 & 25, 1 p.m. Gullah Geechee Program Series, join Ron Daise, Brookgreen's Vice- President for Creative Education, author, and historian and learn about the people, language, and culture of the Gullah Geechee people whose ancestors were enslaved from West Africa and

2 brought here to work on plantations. The program is in the Wall Lowcountry Center Auditorium and is free with garden admission. Oct. 7 & 8, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Harvest Home Weekend Festival, more scarecrows, more animals and more fun! Brookgreen s annual fall festival is filled with outdoor activities the whole family will enjoy. We ll have favorite activities such as scarecrow building, pumpkin painting, hayrides, live entertainment, and more. Tuesdays from 11 a.m. to noon Class 1: Senior Circuit A fun, light/moderate intensity total body workout appropriate for all individuals. This hour long class will revolve around six to eight exercise stations that focus on strengthening all major muscle groups in the body through use of resistance bands, stability balls and light weights. $40 a month (minimum of five registrants). Thursdays from noon to 1 p.m. Class 2: Fit and Stretch An hour long course designed to focus on strength and flexibility of all muscle groups, including core. All fitness levels welcome with 100 percent guidance, instruction and modifications when needed. $40 a month (minimum of five registrants). Fitness Edge (Murrells Inlet, Carolina Forest): Fitness Edge offers Silver Sneakers, which uses a variety of ball, hand weights and resistance tubes exercises while seated in a chair, designed to increase muscular strength, range of movement and activities for daily living. Chapin Myrtle Beach Art Museum: Sept. 28-Dec. 14 Grand Strand Collects is an exhibition of art borrowed from private collections along the Grand Strand, our beloved coastal community stretching from the southern tip of Georgetown County up to the northernmost part of Horry County, South Carolina. Little is known of the incredible art collections that grace our Grand Strand shores, but the Art Museum will bring to light not only the caliber of art in these collections but also pay homage to the art enthusiasts who collect them. Many of these collectors are friends and patrons of the Art Museum, or are soon to be, and we intend to exhibit the treasured art from their homes in a new, extraordinary light at our 1920s-era beach-home-turned-art Museum. Collectors and art enthusiasts alike will be amazed at the beauty of these art objects taken out of the context of their everyday place in homes and offices and arranged thoughtfully with others in our galleries, forming aesthetic relationships with their new neighboring works of art. In addition to the art, visitors will enjoy reading accompanying labels that tell the story of how the art was acquired as well as their personal significance to their owners. The exhibition will feature works of fine art, both 2D and 3D, in all kinds of media that demonstrate not only artistic merit but also their collectors premises for adding them into their collections. Whether the artwork has been passed down from generation to generation in a collector s family or purchased as an addition to a particular collection of work by an artist or genre of art admired by the collector, the

3 Museum is interested not only in the works of art themselves but equally so in the story associated with their acquisition. In short, we want to show off the rich artistic treasures and their respective collectors that reside in our coastal community. Sept. 28-Dec. 14 In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the South Carolina Arts Commission (SCAC), the Art Museum has chosen to highlight one of the SCAC s fellow artists, Joceyln Châteauvert, with one of her extraordinary site-specific installation projects. Châteauvert will transform one of our galleries from its original state into a wonderland of beauty, light and fantasy, thereby inspiring hope, creativity and abstract thinking in those who interact within it. The Art Museum is proud and honored to host an exhibition by one of the SCAC s fellow artists, as we recognize and appreciate the Commission s dedication to exposing all South Carolinians, regardless of their socioeconomic background, to the arts. We recognize and share the importance and necessity of the Commission s mission and are eager to celebrate its accomplishments over the last 50 years. Godwin, author of the 1994 novel, "Keeper of the House" will be at the museum for a special presentation. Local artist, Myrna McMahon, will also display her portraits of the girls of Sunset Lodge. Cocktail hour will be held in the Kossove Garden Terrace at 6 p.m. and the presentation will follow on the lawn of the Kaminski House Museum at 7 p.m. Music will be provided by Coastal Chamber Ensemble with heavy hors d'oeuvres by Carolina Catering. Oct. 14, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Second Saturdays at the Kaminski House Museum; The art of sweetgrass basketmaking with craftswoman Adrina Glover returns to the Kaminski House Museum. "Second Saturdays" with Glover will be presented on the porch of the Kaminski House Museum, Glover will demonstrate the traditional craft of sweetgrass basketmaking and will offer a variety of baskets for sale. Oct. 14, 1 to 5 p.m. Family Fun Day at the Kaminski House Museum; Spend a fun-filled afternoon on the lawn of the Kaminski House Museum. Fall activities will include storytelling,

4 children's games, corn husk doll making and scarecrow building stations. You can also create your own pumpkin face. A Healthy Foods Tent and a Spirited Pumpkin Patch will also be featured on the lawn of the Kaminski House Museum. This is a free event provided to the community through a grant from International Paper. Parents must accompany children to be admitted to this event. Oct. 21, 2 to 4 p.m. Wooden Boat Show Weekend: Commander s Tour at the Kaminski House Museum; In honor of Wooden Boat Show Weekend, the Kaminski House Museum presents a special "Commander's Tour". Experience the special "Commander's Den" filled with antique model ships, naval art, and memorabilia from the life and times of Lt. Commander Harold Kaminski. Admission is $5.00. Long Bay Symphony: Sept. 24, 4 to 6:30 p.m. Carmina Burana. To open our 30th anniversary season, experience one of the most familiar and powerful vocal/orchestral masterpieces of all time. German composer and educator Carl Orff created a compelling musical setting of verses from the Carmina Burana, a collection of bawdy, irreverent Medieval-era texts discovered in a Bavarian monastery in In addition, the opening concert of the LBS s Year of the Symphony features Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart s sparkling Symphony No. 31 ( Paris ), written for the composer s symphonic debut with the French audiences. This event, held on Friday night before the Boat Show, features live and silent auction items donated by Lowcountry merchants and event supporters, as well as first-class wardroom cuisine and imbibements. Tickets are $85 per person. You ll not want to miss this opportunity to meet and trade sea stories with fellow seafarers. Proceeds will benefit the SC Maritime Museum. Call for more info. Oct , 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. 28 th Annual Georgetown Wooden Boat Show at the South Carolina Maritime Museum. The Georgetown Wooden Boat Show always held on the third weekend in October features one of the Southeast s best wooden boat exhibits with more than 140 classic wooden boats displayed on land and water, children s model boatbuilding, knot tying, maritime art and crafts, food and music. A special attraction is Saturday s Wooden Boat Challenge when teams of two race to build a rowing skiff within a 4-hour time limit and then test their boats for seaworthiness in a rowing relay on the Sampit River. Sunday is a fun-filled family oriented day that includes a Cardboard Boat Regatta, and an Opti Pram Regatta. 5 Wooden Boat Show takes place on the waterfront and along Front Street in Historic Downtown Georgetown. The Show is produced by the Harbor Historical Association, a 501(c) (3) tax-exempt organization. All proceeds benefit the South Carolina Maritime Museum. Our certified CPR instructor teaches CPR training for infants and children. Adult CPR is covered, but the emphasis is on pediatric CPR. This class is appropriate for new and expectant parents, grandparents and child care givers. Class is limited to 8 participants. Fee of $20 couple/$10 per person is due on scheduled class date.
