The nickname The Battling Bishops dates to 1925; before then Ohio Wesleyan University s teams were simply known as The Red and Black, or sometimes as The Methodists. Ohio Wesleyan is affiliated with the United Methodist Church, and long has produced many of its bishops. By April, 1925, according to that issue of the Alumni Magazine, the present name had finally been derived. Ohio sports writers have been at a loss, the magazine reported. There are countless colleges throughout the country claiming red and black as their colors, and 14 Methodist colleges in Ohio alone. Pi Delta Epsilon journalism fraternity therefore sponsored a contest, and the winning nickname, The Battling Bishops, was placed before the sports writers of the state as the teams official title. Senior Harold Thomas of Lima submitted the winning entry. The new nickname must have provided inspiration. The 1925 football team, under George Gauthier, The Little Giant, went Its only loss came to Ohio State by a 10-3 score, and it tied Syracuse, 3-3, en route to winning Ohio Conference and Big Six championships. 1

4 2016 BISHOP OUTLOOK 2 Third-year head coach Chelsea Huguenard and the Ohio Wesleyan women s lacrosse team return their top 4 scorers from last year s squad with hopes of making their first North Coast Athletic Conference tournament appearance since We re really young this year, Huguenard said. We re going to be playing a lot of freshmen, but I think our upperclassmen have done a very good job mentoring them, and I foresee this year being a very good year for our squad. Seniors Patricia Ryan and Meghan Doherty return on the Bishop attack. Ryan ranked second on the team in scoring with 24 goals and a team-high 11 assists last season, while Doherty started 15 games and contributed 10 points and 5 assists. Sophomores Corinne Woodson and Ellen Falko, each of whom had injury-shortened 2015 seasons, also return. Freshman Sofia Corrao and freshman Janey Berger also will vie for playing time. Senior Taylor Weis highlights the Bishop midfield. Weis led the team in scoring last season, compiling 33 goals and 4 assists, ranked among the conference s top 20 in 5 different statistical categories, and was a second-team All-NCAC selection. Junior Nicole Sanczyk, who rang up 16 goals and 4 assists in 5 games before her season ended with an injury, is back. Senior Haley Savoie, who was fourth on the team in scoring with 18 goals and an assist and ranked among the NCAC s top 20 in draw controls in 2015, also returns. Sophomore Cory Kinder had 9 goals and an assist and also ranked among the conference s top 20 in draw controls last season. Freshman Kelsey Bowling, a 2-time all-conference pick in high school, should make an immediate impact. Senior Caroline Bonee will see action at both midfield and defense this season. The Bishop defense, while not as experienced as last year s, could be one of the quicker units to take the field for Ohio Wesleyan in recent seasons. Sophomore Kayla Wayne played in 14 games last year, and junior Morgan Williams lettered in 2014 but did not play last season. Natalie Reddy 2016 OWU Women s Lacrosse Newcomers who will contribute right away are freshman Maddie Lancaster, a 3-time all-conference selection in high school; sophomore Isabel Cherry, who did not play last year; and freshman Faith Best. In goal, the starting spot is up for grabs between junior Natalie Reddy, who ranked fifth in the NCAC in goals-against average last year, and freshman Kelly Coffyn, who helped her high school team win a state championship. Ohio Wesleyan s season opens with a trip to Washington & Jefferson, followed by home games against Mount St. Joseph and Keuka. The Bishops head to Puerto Rico for spring-trip games against Roanoke and Oneonta State before returning home for contests against nearby rivals Otterbein and Capital. The non-conference portion of the schedule concludes with a trip to Muskingum. The NCAC schedule opens at Oberlin on April 2, with games against defending champion Wittenberg, 2015 NCAC tournament champion Denison, and 2015 tournament semifinalists Wooster and Oberlin highlighting the conference slate.

20 ABOUT THE NCAC 18 ABOUT THE NCAC Ohio Wesleyan University is a charter member of the North Coast Athletic Conference, which began competition in the academic year. Other charter members are Allegheny College, Case Western Reserve University, Denison University, Kenyon College, Oberlin College and the College of Wooster. Wittenberg University joined the NCAC in 1988, Earlham College joined in 1988 and remains an affiliate member in field hockey, Hiram College and Wabash College joined the NCAC in 1998, and DePauw University joined the NCAC in The NCAC s 10 members believe academic and athletic excellence can co-exist, with no undue overemphasis on athletics. They also believe the principle of balance is important in athletic programs at the Division III level, with no major or minor sports in comparison with any other, but all equally worthwhile. Equity for both men s and women s sports is a founding and standard principle. The NCAC s 23 championship sports includes 11 for men and 12 for women, the latter figure leading all Division III conferences in the country. When at least 5 Conference institutions sponsor a varsity sport, the NCAC conducts championship play and honors the champion. 37 2015 OWU Women s Lacrosse HOME OF THE BISHOPS The Battling Bishop women s lacrosse team plays its home games at Selby Stadium, located on South Henry Street on the eastern edge of campus. A FieldTurf artificial playing surface was installed for the academic year and lights were installed for the academic year, making Selby one of the most impressive venues among NCAA Division III institutions. Built in 1929, Selby boasts a seating capacity of It hosted the 1988 NCAA Division III men s championship game and has been the site of numerous playoff contests. Designed by George Gauthier, Ohio Wesleyan s Hall of Fame football coach and athletic director, and constructed by the Osborn Engineering Company (which also built the original Yankee Stadium), the complex was named after ATHLETIC FACILITIES Selby Stadium The crown jewel of Ohio Wesleyan s athletic facilities is Selby Stadium, which is the home of the football, field hockey, track & field, and men s and women s lacrosse contingents. Selby Stadium received a FieldTurf artificial playing surface for the academic year, lights for the academic year, and a video scoreboard in the spring of 2011, making the venue one of the most impressive among NCAA Division III institutions. Constructed in 1929, Selby also has received a new, fully-enclosed 2-level press box, new bleacher seats, and refurbished locker rooms in recent years. The facility, which seats 9100 and is the fourth-largest college-owned field in NCAA Division III, was the site of the 1988 Division III men s lacrosse championship game. Selby also houses the George Gauthier Track, an Ameritan FP surface installed for the academic year. The site of 20 of the first 31 North Coast Athletic Conference outdoor track & field championships, Selby is believed to be the oldest facility in the nation constructed to Olympic specifications and remaining in its original configuration. Selby Stadium and the Gauthier Track hosted the NCAA Division III outdoor track & field championships in 2011 and Across campus, the Jay Martin Soccer Complex hosts soccer, primarily under the lights. Widely regarded as one of the Midwest s finest facilities for the sport, the Jay Martin Soccer Complex s Roy Rike Field was the site of the NCAA Division III semifinals and championship game for men in 1990 and 1998 and for women in The centerpiece of Ohio Wesleyan s athletic facilities is the Branch Rickey Physical Education Center, prized for both its size and versatility. The Richard Gordon Field House floor George D. Selby, who served the Ohio Wesleyan board of trustees for 24 years. His sons, Mark, Homer, Pearl, and Roger donated $100,000 of the project s $160,000 cost. Selby Stadium recently underwent a restoration project that included a new, 2-level press box, new bleacher seats and refurbished locker rooms. Selby also houses the George Gauthier Track, an Ameritan FP surface installed in From 2004 through 2008, the Bishops played their home games at Roy Rike Field, also home of the soccer teams. Prior to 2004, Ohio Wesleyan home games were played at the Henry Street Field, located on Henry Street south of Selby Field, on the site of today s Luttinger Family Tennis Center. Gordon Field House was resurfaced in November 2008, and the track was refinished with a state-of-the-art encapsulated surface in December Gordon Field House hosted the first 9 NCAC indoor track & field championships. Indoor practice for fall and spring sports can be handled there as well: floor space is larger than a football field, accommodating 4 courts for tennis, basketball and volleyball. Branch Rickey Arena, seating 1450, hosts varsity basketball and volleyball contests. Also in the Center are 5 handball/ racquetball courts, a squash court, offices, locker rooms and lounges. Offices and locker rooms also are part of Edwards Gymnasium, which is connected by tunnel to the Rickey Center. Remodeling in Edwards has recently included an expanded strength facility. The men s and women s swimming teams compete in the Meek Aquatics and Recreation Center, a 10-lane, geothermally heated facility that opened in October Softball is played at Margaret Sagan Field, which opened during the 2008 season. Baseball is played at Littick Field, site of the 2003 NCAA Division III Mideast Regional. Tennis is played at the Luttinger Family Tennis Center, a complex of 6 outdoor courts that opened in the fall of 2010, and 6 outdoor courts across the street where the 1978 NCAA Division III championships were held. The cross country teams run home meets at nearby Liberty Park. The men s golf team plays home tournaments at Oakhaven Golf Club, north of Delaware, and the women s golf team plays home tournaments at Mill Creek Golf Club in Ostrander, west of Delaware.
