Millinery... back by popular demand! SFD is excited to announce that our popular Millinery class will be back this Spring semester! In this hands-on studio course, instructor Lisa Taranto guides students through the inspiration, design, construction and detailed finishing of hats, fascinators and headwear. Students should

Alumni Spotlight Lilian Gabriel de Almeida Barbosa Class of 2014 Co-founder of Oola sportswear SFD students come from a diverse set of professional experience backgrounds. Like many of our students, Brazilian-born Lilian Gabriel de Almeida Barbosa already held a degree when she shifted career gears and came to study fashion design at SFD. She was 26 years old when she first sat at a sewing machine. With her degree in physical therapy and a Diploma in Fashion Design from the School of Fashion Design, Lilian was a perfect fit for the design team of the new startup company Oola sportswear.

7 Oola is a modesty-inspired line of clothing that allows a segment of women to experience outdoor sports without the burden of layering bulky, non-matching, non-technical clothes. Most women's sportswear is too tight, too short, too low-cut, or built in short-sleeved-only options. For women who value modesty out of personal values or practicing religion - such as those of the Islamic, Orthodox Judaic or Coptic Christian faiths - finding athletic wear that performs and comes in desired styles is a tiring hunt. Good activewear, depending on the sport, is quick-drying, breathable, and/or water-repellent. Coming across attire that is all three and enables a woman to stay covered fashionably in comfort is all too uncommon. Oola activewear is designed for women to brave the outdoors, push their fitness goals and challenge their limits. "Being a part of a the Oola team, where the main goal is to excel in sports and fitness, without having to compromise religious and cultural beliefs is very rewarding." says Lilian. When Lilian isn't working as a designer, she can be found traveling the world. She has called Boston, Chicago, London and Vienna her home in just four years. Lilian loves traveling, cultural exchange, and enjoys running along beach stretches wherever possible. She also teaches Pilates. Learn more about Oola here.
